        The corrosion rate of copper pipe used in distribution system was studied in presence of chloride, sulfate and fluoride ions, respectively. It was compared with test results using mixtures of sulfate and chloride at concentrations similar to those of tap water in Gyeongnam area. The corrosion rate of copper pipe was higher in the presence of sulfate than chloride showing two fold higher rate. In contrast copper concentration in synthetic water containing chloride was rather higher than in the presence sulfate. Fluoride was generally considered less aggressive toward corrosion of pipes, but corrosion rate and the concentration of copper were relatively large values. During potentiostatic anodic polarisation a relatively large current was producted in the chloride containing solutions.

        실내 거실 사용자의 시각적 지각 반응에 관한 연구 : 공간 이미지를 중심으로 Focused on the Space Image

        A transactional approach was used to examine user's responses to living rooms. In experiment 1, 20 subjects evaluated a sample of 28 rooms on nine scale and ranked order the scales as to difficulty of application. A factor analysis yielded three room categories: Decorative, Stylish, and Familiar. Subjects found it easier to make affective rather than cognitive judgments. Experiment 2 examined the effects of relative involvement on responses to the three categories of rooms. 20 graduated students and 25 undergraduate students viewed the 6 rooms(two from each category) and rated each one on six 7-point scales and graduated students only wrote brief imaginative accounts of an episode which might take place in each room. The desire to live in a room was best predicted by perceived beauty and personal involvement. Familiar rooms were preferred most, while decorative rooms were seen as most informative about the person.

        Epigenetics: general characteristics and implications for oral health

        Genetic information such as DNA sequences has been limited to fully explain mechanisms of gene regulation and disease process. Epigenetic mechanisms, which include DNA methylation, histone modification and non-coding RNAs, can regulate gene expression and affect progression of disease. Although studies focused on epigenetics are being actively investigated in the field of medicine and biology, epigenetics in dental research is at the early stages. However, studies on epigenetics in dentistry deserve attention because epigenetic mechanisms play important roles in gene expression during tooth development and may affect oral diseases. In addition, understanding of epigenetic alteration is important for developing new therapeutic methods. This review article aims to outline the general features of epigenetic mechanisms and describe its future implications in the field of dentistry.

        Anti-inflammatory Effects of Ethanol Extract of Various Korean Compositae Herbs in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 Macrophages

        Objective : This study was designed to evaluate candidate materials as anti-inflammation agent from extracts of various Korean Compositae herbs in Hwaak mountain. Among Korea medicinal herbs, Ainsliaea acerifolia (AA) belongs to the Compositae family, has been used for the treatment of rheumatic arthritis. However, AA has not been previously reported to have an anti-inflammatory effect. Therefore, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of AA and its underlying molecular mechanisms in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages. Methods : Cell viability was determined by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay in RAW 264.7 macrophages. Nitric oxide (NO) was measured with Griess reagent and pro-inflammatory cytokines were detected by enzyme immunoassay (EIA) kits in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. Protein expressions of inducible nitric oxide synthase, and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and p65 subunit of nuclear $factor-{\kappa}B$ ($NF-{\kappa}B$) were determined by Western blot analysis. Results : Among 8 extracts of Korean Compositae herbs tested, AA showed the inhibition of NO production without cytotoxicity. Consistent with the observation, AA reduced the expression levels of iNOS and COX-2 proteins in LPS-simulated RAW 264.7 macrophages in dose-dependent manner. In addition, AA inhibited the productions of $TNF-{\alpha}$ and IL-6 in LPS-simulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. However, AA did not inhibit activation of p65 $NF-{\kappa}B$ in LPS-simulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. Conclusion : These results suggest that down-regulation of iNOS, COX-2 protein expression and $TNF-{\alpha}$ and IL-6 production by AA are responsible for its anti-inflammatory effects.

      • Solution-Derived Zn-Doped GaO Films as Alignment Layers for Twisted-Nematic Liquid Crystal Displays Using Ion-Beam Bombardment

        <P>This letter demonstrates liquid crystal (LC) alignment on solution-derived Zn-doped GaO (ZnGaO) films using an ion beam (IB) method. Homogeneous and uniform LC alignment was achieved on IB-irradiated ZnGaO films. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to analyze the chemical bonding states of the IB-irradiated ZnGaO surfaces to verify the compositional behavior for LC alignment. In addition, ZnGaO films with twisted nematic cells exhibited electro-optical characteristics comparable with those of a conventional polyimide layer for potential LC display applications.</P>

        Nrf2 induces Ucp1 expression in adipocytes in response to β3-AR stimulation and enhances oxygen consumption in high-fat diet-fed obese mice

        Cold-induced norepinephrine activates β3-adrenergic receptors (β3-AR) to stimulate the kinase cascade and cAMP-response element-binding protein, leading to the induction of thermogenic gene expression including uncoupling protein 1 (Ucp1). Here, we showed that stimulation of the β3-AR by its agonists isoproterenol and CL316,243 in adipocytes increased the expression of Ucp1 and Heme Oxygenase 1 (Hmox1), the principal Nrf2 target gene, suggesting the functional interaction of Nrf2 with β3-AR signaling. The activation of Nrf2 by tert-butylhydroquinone and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by glucose oxidase induced both Ucp1 and Hmox1 expression. The increased expression of Ucp1 and Hmox1 was significantly reduced in the presence of a Nrf2 chemical inhibitor or in Nrf2-deleted (knockout) adipocytes. Furthermore, Nrf2 directly activated the Ucp1 promoter, and this required DNA regions located at -3.7 and -2.0 kb of the transcription start site. The CL316,243-induced Ucp1 expression in adipocytes and oxygen consumption in obese mice were partly compromised in the absence of Nrf2 expression. These data provide additional insight into the role of Nrf2 in β3-AR-mediated Ucp1 expression and energy expenditure, further highlighting the utility of Nrf2-mediated thermogenic stimulation as a therapeutic approach to diet-induced obesity.       • The Outcomes of Pituitary Apoplexy with Conservative Treatment: Experiences at a Single Institution

        <P><B>Objective</B></P> <P>Pituitary apoplexy is an unpredictable complication caused by hemorrhage or infarction in a pituitary adenoma. We retrospectively analyzed the radiologic and clinical outcomes of patients with conservatively managed pituitary apoplexy.</P> <P><B>Methods</B></P> <P>A total of 32 patients who had undergone conservative treatment with high-dose corticosteroid replacement were enrolled in this study. This cohort study consisted of 20 male and 12 female patients. The median patient age was 60 years. Five patients had a previously diagnosed pituitary tumor, and one third of the patients had a history of hypertension.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>The median follow-up duration was 50 months. The median tumor volumes at the initial and final assessments were 2.75 cm<SUP>3</SUP> (range, 0.32–10.7 cm<SUP>3</SUP>) and 0.64 cm<SUP>3</SUP> (range, 0–8.74 cm<SUP>3</SUP>), respectively. Complete radiographic regression occurred in 9 of the 32 patients, partial regression occurred in 14 patients, and no change in size or progression occurred in 9 patients. Eighteen of the 32 patients had visual disturbances at the initial presentation; in this subgroup, 17 patients showed improvement over the course of the study. One patient had newly developed diplopia related to tumor progression. Nineteen of the 32 patients had ≥1 hormonal deficiency at the initial assessment, 8 of whom recovered to normal endocrine status. Three patients developed a new hormonal deficiency during the follow-up, and 3 patients experienced tumor recurrence.</P> <P><B>Conclusions</B></P> <P>This study showed the regression of tumors related to pituitary apoplexy, with favorable ophthalmologic and endocrinologic recovery. Conservative management should be considered in patients without severe or progressive neuro-ophthalmic deficits.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We investigated the radiologic and clinical outcome of 32 patients with consertavtively treated pituitary apoplexy. </LI> <LI> Conservative management resulted in acceptable neuro-ophthalmic and endocrinologic outcomes. </LI> <LI> Tumor volume pattern within 1–3 three months after apoplexy might be an important prognostic factor of tumor regression. </LI> <LI> Conservative management should be considered if the visual disturbance has not deteriorated. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • Highly efficient hybrid thin-film solar cells using a solution-processed hole-blocking layer

        <P>We report the origin of the improvement of the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of hybrid thin-film solar cells when a soluble C<SUB>60</SUB> derivative, [6,6]-phenyl-C<SUB>61</SUB>-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), is introduced as a hole-blocking layer. The PCBM layer could establish better interfacial contact by decreasing the reverse dark-saturation current density, resulting in a decrease in the probability of carrier recombination.
