승화방법에 의해 CdS_0.46Se_0.54 단결정을 성장하여 결정구조를 조사하고, Van der Pauw 방법으로 Hall effect를 측정하여 carrier density의 온도 의존성과 mobility의 온도 의존성을 조사하였다. 성장된 CdS_0.46Se_0.54 단결정을 치환반응하여 n-CdS_0.46Se_0.54/p-Cu_2-xS_0.46Se_0.54 이종접합 태양전지를 제작하였다. Spectral response, 전류-전압특성 및 전력변환 효율을 조사하여 그 결과로부터 개방전압은 0.48V, 단락 전류 밀도는 21mA/㎠, fill factor와 전력변환효율은 각각 0.75와 9.5%를 얻었다. CdS_0.46Se_0.54 single crystal was grown by a sublimation method. The crystal structure and the temperature dependence of carrier density and mobility of CdS_0.46Se_0.54 single crystal were studied. Heterojunction solar cells on n-CdS_0.46Se_0.54/p-Cu_2-xS_0.46Se_0.54 were fabricated by the substitution reaction. The spectral response, the J-U characteristics and the conversion efficiency of the n-CdS_0.46Se_0.54/p-Cu_2-xS_0.46Se_0.54 heterojunction solar cells were studied. The open-cricuit voltage, short-circuit density, fill factor and conversion efficiency of n-CdS_0.46Se_0.54/p-Cu_2-xS_0.46Se_0.54 heterojunction solar cells under 80mW/㎠ illumination were found to be 0.48V, 21mA/㎠, 0.75 and 9.5%, respectively.
Effect of Partially Purified Lipid from the Mussel Mytilus coruscus on Apoptosis in Cancer Cells

Anticancer effects of the mussel (Mytilus coruscus) cultivated in Korea were determined. Lipid extracts of Mytilus coruscus were prepared using extractions in several organic solvents: methanol, chloroform, hexane, methanol:chloroform=1:1, and chloroform:hexane=1:1. Anticancer activities of the extracts were evaluated using apoptosis assays analyzed by flow cytometry. The hexane extract exhibited the highest anticancer activity. This extract was further separated and purified using thin layer chromatography, through which lipid compounds were isolated, and their components were analyzed; the major fatty acids were eiocosadienoic acid (EA, C20:2), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6), and these components were higher than those of the mussels cultivated in New Zealand and Italy. The partially purified lipid compounds exhibited an anticancer effect in several cancer cell lines. These results indicate that lipid extract of M. coruscus effectively inhibits in vitro tumor growth by inducing apoptosis of cancer cells.

It is well known that the interactions between epithelial and mesenchymal components are very important event for tooth development, and their coordination is crucial to tooth development. Recently it has been reported that human PDLSC might be a mesenchymal component for regeneration of periodontal tissue. In contrast, characteristics of human HERS cells and their roles in development and regeneration of tooth are not well elucidated. In this study, we investigated the phenotypes and the differentiation potentials of human HERS cells and PDLSCs. First of all, we simultaneously isolated human HERS cells and PDLSCs from the same periodontal ligament tissues. Hence we established the method for primary isolation of human HERS cells and PDLSC at the same time. Human HERS cells and PDLSCs showed different cell morphology and growth patterns from each other. In particular, human HERS cells showed epithelial cell-like morphology, while human PDLSCs showed fibroblast-like morphology. In the immunophenotype analysis of cell surface markers, human PDLSCs were positive for the mesenchymal stem cell markers but human HERS cells showed different expressions. Human PDLSCs were able to differentiate into osteoblasts and adipocytes by appropriate induction. On the other hand, human HERS cells acquired mesenchymal phenotypes by TGF-β1 through EMT. Taken together, our data suggest that human HERS cells and PDLSCs might play a role as a epithelial component or a mesenchymal component for the tooth regeneration,v respectively.

Background: Data on liver cirrhosis (LC) patients undergoing continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) are lacking despite of the dismal prognosis. We therefore evaluated clinical characteristics and predictive factors related to mortality in LC patients undergoing CRRT. Methods: We performed a retrospective observational study at two tertiary hospitals in Korea. A total of 229 LC patients who underwent CRRT were analyzed. Patients were classified into survivor and non-survivor groups. We used multivariable Cox regression analyses to identify predictive factors of in-hospital mortality. Results: During a median follow-up of 5 days (interquartile range, 1-19 days), in-hospital mortality rate was 66.4%. In multivariable analysis, the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) score (hazard ratio [HR], 1.03; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01-1.06; p = 0.02), Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score (HR, 1.08; 95% CI, 1.04-1.11; p < 0.001), and delivered CRRT dose (HR, 0.95; 95% CI, 0.92-0.98; p = 0.002) were significant risk factors for in-hospital mortality. Patients with a CRRT delivered dose < 25 mL/kg/hr had a higher mortality rate than those with a delivered dose > 35 mL/kg/hr (HR, 3.13; 95% CI, 1.62-6.05; p = 0.001). Subgroup analysis revealed that a CRRT delivered dose < 25 mL/kg/hr was a significant risk factor for in-hospital mortality among LC patients with a MELD score ≥ 30. Conclusion: High APACHE II score, high MELD score, and low delivered CRRT dose were significant risk factors for in-hospital mortality. CRRT delivered dose impacted mortality significantly, especially in patients with a MELD score ≥ 30.

This study was carried out to investigate the management characteristics and techniques by comparing and analyzing the process of mixing, sterilization, cooling, inoculation and incubation for bag cultivation of L. edodes. The medium was sterilized after mixing it for 30 minutes, 1 and 2 hours respectively. The general moisture content of the sawdust substrate has been adjusted to 65%, while the case of the L. edodes substrate was 55%. Only 5% of wood chips of 5-8 mm in particle size were mixed to secure the space of the sawdust particles. As a result, mycelial growth was 1.4cm faster and the density was better(+++) than control(++). Wood chips are soaked in advance for a week during winter and 4 days during summer. There is an average number of 1.6x108 (cfu) of microorganisms in the sawdust that has been piled for six months outdoor. In summer, it has to be used immediately after mixing sawdust. High-pressure sterilization should be performed to use as a mushroom spawn, and to improve physical properties, it was great to sterilize the medium at a normal-pressure. There are height and width type for bags to be consumed for bagging. When the height was reduced into 17cm and the width was increased into 13cm, the browning period was shortened by 30 days and the period of mycelial growth was shortened by 25 days. The sterilized medium had an average of 4x103(cfu) of microorganisms at 25°C and 1.3×102 (cfu) at 15°C. After 25 days from inoculation in vitro, the growth condition of sawdust was the best with 13.2 cm, followed by grain spawn and liquid respectively. When inoculated with liquid spawn, the moisture content of substrate should be adjusted to 55% to 50% in advance.
Quinolone-resistant Shigella flexneri Isolated in a Patient Who Travelled to India

We report a recent case in which ciprofloxacin-resistant Shigella flexneri was isolated from a 23-yr-old female patient with a history of travel to India. Prior to her admission to our internal medicine department, she experienced symptoms of high fever and generalized weakness from continuous watery diarrhea that developed midway during the trip. S. flexneri was isolated from the stool culture. Despite initial treatment with ciprofloxacin, the stool cultures continued to show S. flexneri growth. In the susceptibility test for antibiotics of the quinolone family, the isolate showed resistance to ciprofloxacin(minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC], 8 μg/mL), norfloxacin (MIC, 32 μg/mL), ofloxacin (MIC, 8 μg/mL),nalidixic acid (MIC, 256 μg/mL), and intermediate resistance to levofloxacin (MIC, 4 μg/mL). In molecular studies for quinolone resistance related genes, plasmid borne-quinolone resistance genes such as qnrA, qnrB, qnrS, aac(6’)-Ib-cr, qepA, and oqxAB were not detected. Two mutations were observed in gyrA (248C→T, 259G→A) and 1 mutation in parC (239G→T). The molecular characteristics of the isolated S. flexneri showed that the isolate was more similar to the strains isolated from the dysentery outbreak in India than those isolated from Korea.

Small hydropower attracts attention because of its clean, renewable and abundant energy resources to develop. However, suitable draft-tube type is not determined yet because of its complicated internal flow and unstable turbine performance at the partial flow rate by the influence of the draft tube. Therefore, it is necessary to study the influence of draft tube shape. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of the draft tube shape to its internal flow using CFD analysis. The results show that large secondary flow occurs at the curve area of the draft tube and the secondary flow goes out to the outlet of the draft tube in the case of no-prerotation condition of the inlet flow.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of number of guide vane on the turbine performance, output power, and efficiency of tubular-type hydroturbine.
