Aim: Connexin 43 (Cx43) and E-cadherin are important biomarkers related with cancer. Their expression at protein and mRNA levels was here investigated in 50 primary lung carcinoma tissues and 20 samples of adjacent normal tissue of Chinese patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods: Protein and mRNA expression were evaluated by ABC immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR. Results: (1) The positive expression rates of Cx43 and E-cadherin protein were higher in the adjacent normal tissues than those in the primary lung carcinoma tissues; (2) the positive expression rates of Cx43 and E-cadherin protein decreased with NSCLC progression; (3) the expression of E-cadherin protein was not related with the pathological type of NSCLC; and (4) the relative quantity of the Cx43 or E-cadherin mRNA expression was correlated with the the histological type, clinical stage, cancer cell differentiation and the lymph node metastasis. Conclusion: The data suggested that the Cx43 and E-cadherin are reduced with NSCLC progression, and might be important biomarkers for judging the metastasis and prognosis.

In this paper, the problem of delay-dependent stabilization for singular systems with multiple internal and external incommensurate constant point delays is investigated. The condition when a singular system subject to point delays is regular independent of time delays is given and it can be easily test with numerical or algebraic methods. Based on Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional approach and the descriptor integral-inequality lemma, a sufficient condition for delay-dependent stability is obtained. The main idea is to design multiple memory less state feedback control laws such that the resulting closed-loop system is regular independent of time delays, impulse free, and asymptotically stable via solving a strict linear matrix inequality (LMI) problem. An explicit expression for the desired memory less state feedback control laws is also given. Finally, a numerical example illustrates the effectiveness and the availability for the proposed method.

In this paper, decentralized robust H∞ output feedback control problem for large-scale interconnected system with value bounded uncertainties in the state, control input and interconnection matrices is investigated. A new bounded real lemma for the large-scale interconnected systems is derived by Lyapunov stability theory and linear matrix inequality method. Based on the new bounded real lemma, a sufficient condition expressed as matrix inequalities for the existence of a decentralized robust H∞ output feedback controller is obtained. The controller which enables the closed-loop large-scale system robust stable and satisfies the given H∞ performance is designed through a homotopy iterative method. Finally, a numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Cotton plants were sampled and ranked according to their resistance to Verticillium wilt. In total, 642 endophytic fungi isolates representing 27 genera were recovered from Gossypium hirsutum root, stem, and leaf tissues, but were not uniformly distributed. More endophytic fungi appeared in the leaf (391) compared with the root (140) and stem (111) sections. However, no significant difference in the abundance of isolated endophytes was found among resistant cotton varieties. Alternaria exhibited the highest colonization frequency (7.9%), followed by Acremonium (6.6%) and Penicillium (4.8%). Unlike tolerant varieties, resistant and susceptible ones had similar endophytic fungal population compositions. In three Verticillium-wilt-resistant cotton varieties, fungal endophytes from the genus Alternaria were most frequently isolated, followed by Gibberella and Penicillium. The maximum concentration of dominant endophytic fungi was observed in leaf tissues (0.1797). The evenness of stem tissue endophytic communities (0.702) was comparatively more uniform than the other two tissues. Eighty endophytic fungi selected from 27 genera were evaluated for their inhibition activity against highly virulent Verticillium dahliae isolate Vd080 in vitro. Thirty-nine isolates exhibited fungistasis against the pathogen at varying degrees. Seven species, having high growth inhibition rates (≥75%), exhibited strong antifungal activity against V. dahliae. The antifungal activity of both volatile and nonvolatile metabolites was also investigated. The nonvolatile substances produced by CEF-818 (Penicillium simplicissimum), CEF-325 (Fusarium solani), CEF-714 (Leptosphaeria sp.), and CEF-642 (Talaromyces flavus) completely inhibited V. dahliae growth. These findings deepen our understanding of cotton-endophyte interactions and provide a platform for screening G. hirsutum endophytes with biocontrol potential.

A developmentally stunted mutant (dsm1) of Arabidopsis, isolated from an EMS mutant screen, had a pleiotropic phenotype, including repressed germination, retarded growth, delayed flowering, and impaired fertility. Additionally, dsm1 had a lifespan of approximately 160 days, which was more than twice the lifespan of the wild type (Col-0). Fine morphological and anatomical characters, such as the shoot apical meristem, root apical meristem, seed shape, and seed surface, were obviously altered in dsm1. We found that both abscisic acid and zeatin riboside levels were significantly greater in dsm1 than in Col-0 at all stages of development, while the levels of indole-3-acetic acid and gibberellins varied by age. The expressions of some abscisic acid-related genes were higher in dsm1 than in Col-0. These data indicate that DSM1 may play a general role in plant growth and development.

The effects of amino acids (aa) and N-(diisopropyloxyphosphoryl)-amino acids (DIPP-aa) on cell membranes were investigated by evaluating water and methyl urea permeability. Permeability coefficients P_f and P_s were determined by standard osmotic methods for cells of Pisum sativum stem base epidermis after 20min exposure to a 5 mM solution of each aa and DIPP-aa. The P_f value of P. sativum epidermal cells (untreated controls) was 1.3±0.4×10 exp (-3)㎛ s^-1. Treat ments with the diisopropyl-oxyphosphoryl derivatives of three one charged and three polar amino acids (serine, threonine, asparagine, and aspartic acid) and unsubstituted (free) serine and threonine increased water permeability up to about two fold of the control value. Serine and threonine and their DIPP-derivatives increased methyl urea permeability (controls 1.03±0.09×10 exp (-3)㎛ s^-1) 30 to 80 percent Other amino acids and their DIPP-derivatives caused small or insignificant changes of water permeability. Only certain polar amino acids and their DIPP-derivatives increased the osmotic water and methyl urea permeation through the plasma membrane. The specificity of these molecules on plasma membranes suggests that the active amino acids (serine and threonine) and their DIPP-derivatives interact with charged membrane molecules. The relatively small changes in water and methyl urea permeability may indicate that the effective aa's and their DIPP-derivatives interact with phospholipids rather than aquaporin. A concurring alteration of water channel proteins, however, cannot excluded.

Abstract

Disposal of soil washing effluent (SWE) resulting from the surfactant-enhanced remediation of soil containing hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs)is complicated because of the presence of high levels of surfactants. The synthesized layered double hydroxides (LDHs), modified with sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) in different loading amounts (organo-LDHs),were evaluated in this study as sorbents for the removal of two typical HOCs, phenanthrene (PHE) and pyrene (PYR),from a simulative SWE. The results showed that the organo-LDHs can effectively sorb PHE and PYR from the SWE within an equilibrium time of 2 h. All isotherms were linear and the sorption capabilities of the organo-LDHs increased almost linearly with the increase in the amount of SDS loaded on the LDHs. Besides, the surface areas of the organo-LDHs decreased sharply with the increase in SDS loading owing to the hindrance of the exposed surface of the LDHs by the incorporated SDS. These findings indicated that partitioning dominated the sorption process rather than adsorption, and the strong affinity of HOCs towards the organic phase in LDHs assisted in the effective removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from the SWE. Furthermore, the sorption capabilities of organo-LDHs towards PHE and PYR at the higher loading amounts of SDS were much greater than that of commercial activated carbon at the higher concentration ranges of PAHs.

Highlights

Dodecyl sulfonate anion modified LDHs are employed for the removal of PHE and PYR in soil washing effluent (SWE).

Organo-LDHs showed superior performance in PHE removal from SWE than that of commercial activated carbon.

Partitioning of PHE and PYR in the organic fraction of the organo-LDHs was the main mechanism.

Using organo-LDHs for the separation of HOCs from surfactants in SWE facilitated reuse of the surfactants.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]
