Trauma and Spirituality of Victims of Sexual Abuse
( RohPaul ),( YeoHankoo ) 한국목회상담학회 2017 목회와 상담 Vol.29 No.-
This study focuses on the trauma and spirituality of victims of sexual abuse in terms of pastoral counseling. The purpose of this study is to examine the pastoral counseling approach to the victims of sexual abuse that focuses on spiritual healing and recovery from sexual trauma. Many victims of sexual abuse report symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and suffer from psychological and physical problems after their traumatic incidents. Sexual trauma may affect a person’s spirituality either positively or negatively. Individuals with sexual trauma struggle to overcome the problems according to their coping resources. Among these resources, spirituality of victims is associated with their coping mechanisms and recovery. Clients with sexual trauma struggle with spiritual questions and issues regarding their sexual abuse and the causes of sexual abuse. They may interpret their situation and pain differently according to their spiritual beliefs and cognitions, and may have negative feelings, such as anger and distrust toward God. However, at the same time, they can benefit from spiritual support or a spiritual approach for growth and healing. Pastoral counselors should be prepared to help clients with sexual trauma cope well with their psychological problems and spiritual struggle. In this regard, this study discusses spiritual issues and spiritual interventions during treatment. Pastoral counselors should have knowledge of a spiritual approach and specific interventions for the victims of sexual abuse at a deeper level and be aware of the strengths and the limitations of the treatments. Although this study provides limited theoretical principles, it is noteworthy that it expands understanding of sexual trauma victims and emphasizes the necessity of the pastoral counseling approach.
