The Development of Creativity through Rich Open-Ended Mathematical Tasks

Mathematical creativity and modeling can be fostered through the use of rich open-ended mathematical tasks (model-eliciting activities) (Cline, 1999; English & Watters, 2009; Freiman, 2006; Mousoulides, Sriraman & Christou, 2007). More than 300 prospective elementary teachers completed different open-ended problems in a longitudinal project over three years to develop their own modeling competencies and creativity to prepare them to use modeling to stimulate creativity in young children aged 6 to 9. Class discussions of the pre-service teachers` multiple solution strategies supported reflective thinking and the development of metacognitive competencies which in turn fostered creativity and fluency in mathematical representations.
