MicroRNA 452 regulates ASB8, NOL8, and CDR2 expression in colorectal cancer cells

Background MicroRNAs play important roles in the pathogenesis of human diseases by regulating target gene expression in specifc cells or tissues. Previously, we identifed microRNA 452 (MIR452), which was specifcally up-regulated in early stage human colorectal cancer (CRC) tissue. Objective The current study aims to identify and verify the target genes of MIR452 associated with CRC. Methods A luciferase reporter system was used to confrm the efect of MIR452 on ASB8, NOL8, and CDR2 expression. The expression levels of MIR452 and the target genes were evaluated by quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR) and western blotting. Results We verifed the association between MIR452 and three genes, ASB8, NOL8, and CDR2, and showed that their transcripts were down-regulated by MIR452. Up-regulated MIR452 also down-regulated ASB8, NOL8, and CDR2 mRNA and protein levels in CRC cells. CDR2 protein expression was decreased in CRC tissues compared to adjacent non-tumor tissues. Conclusions These results suggest that ASB8, NOL8, and CDR2 were target genes of MIR452 in CRC cells and that upregulated MIR452 in CRC tissue regulated ASB8, NOL8, and CDR2 expression during colorectal carcinogenesis.

Owing to frequent heavy rain due to abnormal weather, the occurrence of pepper anthracnose has recently increased, which affects the supply and demand of pepper. As a result, the price of red pepper powder in 2011, for example, increased three times compared to the average year. Although anthracnose of pepper plants has been controlled by fungicides until now, it is important to develop new resistant cultivars because of the reduction of the labor force in rural area and occurrence of new anthracnose strains resistant to fungicides. National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science developed two pepper lines, ‘Wonye 100005’ and ‘Wonye 100006’ that are resistant to pepper anthracnose. These lines were developed by continuous selection of progenies from a cross between ‘Wonye AR1’, which were developed from interspecific hybridization and ‘TF68’. The anthracnose resistance level of the two lines was higher than that of commercial cultivars and similar to check varieties showing highest level of anthracnose resistance.

This study was designed to exam the aged's needs for spiritual nursing care. The purpose was to serve as a basis for the development of spiritual nursing practice. The major findings are as follows : 1. The degree of needs for spiritual nursing care as area was that needs of love and relationship mean 22.0, needs of meaning and object mean 28.2, needs of forgiving mean 13.5. Total needs for spiritual nursing care mean 63.7, which was on the upper middle level. The needs of meaning and object was rated highest. 2. Among the general characteristics of the subjects, needs of love and relatiohship wasn't significanlty different. 3. Among the general characteristics of the subjects, needs of meaning and object was significantly different according to two factors : age(F=7.260, p=0.001), religion(F=5.275, p=0.001). Higher needs of meaning and object was possessed by the older than the younger, by the one who have religion than the other. 4. Among the general characteristics of the subjects, four factors made a significantly difference to needs of forgiving : sex(t=-2.851, p=0.006), age(F=8.201, p=0.001), religion(F=6.928, p=0.000), disease(t=2.327, p=0.024). Higher needs of forgiving was possessed by man than woman, by the older than the younger, by the one who have religion than the other, by the one who have disease than the other.
A biocompatible implant electrode capable of operating in body fluids for energy storage devices

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Implantable electronic medical devices (IEMDs) can potentially be used to solve various clinical problems including the monitoring of chronic diseases and electro-organ transplantation. Several recently introduced techniques based on implantable devices that exploit novel metal- or carbon-based hybrid materials are biocompatible owing to their encapsulation in nontoxic polymers. However, such techniques limit the correct functioning of implantable devices, resulting in frequent replacement, difficult miniaturization, and inflammatory side effects in the body. Here, we describe a new technique for application to IEMDs that is capable of providing energy storage using the natural ions of body fluids as electrolytes in a supercapacitor (or ultracapacitor). The system is constructed with a solar cell for energy harvesting and a supercapacitor for energy storage. We assembled IEMDs with two biocompatible electrodes, specifically, MnO<SUB>2</SUB> nanoparticles affixed to multi-walled carbon nanotubes as the positive electrodes and phosphidated activated carbon as the negative electrodes. From the obtained result, this work can be further extended to the use of rats. This technique avoids the problems of performance degradation and toxicity that normally limits the reaction that is permissible in extracellular fluid. We present this concept schematically. The two biocompatible electrodes were successfully implanted into the subcutaneous layer of a rat's skin with both electrodes showing stable performance in use as parts of a supercapacitor. These findings establish a platform for potential biocompatible materials for implantable energy storage devices.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Pristine and Ru-doped LiNi<SUB>0.5</SUB>Mn<SUB>1.5</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB> samples were synthesized using a simple carbon combustion method. Crystallographic analyses combining X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement confirmed that formation of the Li<SUB> <I>x</I> </SUB>Ni<SUB>1−<I>x</I> </SUB>O-like impurity phase is prevented and that the lattice parameter increases as a result of Ru doping. Furthermore, its structure is partially changed to the more disordered spinel phase (<I>Fd</I>3<I>m</I>). Non-aqueous quasi-solid electrolyte for use in supercapacitors

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Gel electrolytes have attracted increasing attention for use in supercapacitors. An ideal gel electrolyte usually solves several problems, including electrolyte leakage, corrosion of the liquid electrolyte, and electrolyte packing. In this study, to address these issues, tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate in propylene carbonate was integrated into a poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate polymer matrix with azobisisobutyronitrile as a thermal initiator. The specific capacitance of this quasi-solid electrolyte was 22% higher than that of the corresponding liquid-based electrolyte at 1mAcm<SUP>−2</SUP>. Further, a supercapacitor wrapped with the quasi-solid electrolyte exhibited energy and power densities of 39Whkg<SUP>−1</SUP> and 2.5kWkg<SUP>−1</SUP>, respectively. Notably, the quasi-solid-electrolyte-based supercapacitor was very stable when cycled at a high current density (5mAcm<SUP>−2</SUP>), with only 31% of its initial capacitance lost after 10,000 cycles. Wrapping the supercapacitor with the non-aqueous quasi-solid electrolyte provided a solidified surface, which reduced contact with moisture and oxygen in the air, thereby solving the evaporation problem encountered with liquid electrolytes.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Jejunal infarction as a complication of acute pancreatitis is not common and can not be well recognized. This jejunal infarction usually arises from the venous thrombosis rather than arterial thrombosis. Jejunal infarction results in bowel perforation or stenosis according to its extension of injury and progression rate. Pathologic findings of the involved jejunum show a segmental transmural infarction and mesenteric venous thrombotic occlusions. Early diagnosis should be made for better prognosis. We report a patient with jejunal infarction resulting perforation due to acute pancreatitis, in which the initial presenting symptoms were hematemesis and abdominal distention.
