Theoretically, if the odontoblastic layer on the pulpal surface of the dentin is removed, it is impossible to find nucleus after the teeth has undergone endodontic therapy. So dentin does not contain genomic DNA. But it is in existence the possibility that blood permeates into the dentin by endodontic therapy and trauma. Therefore DNA in blood can be detected from the dentin layer. The purpose of this investigation is to evaluate the possibility of individual identification after detection of DNA in the dentin of endodontic created teeth. The authors isolated the human DNA from 40 endodontic treated teeth, performed AmpFLPs by PCR and electrophoresed for detection of STR loci F13A01, LPL gene and X-Y homologous amelogenin gene. The following results were obtained: 1) DNA extraction was possible in 19 endodontic treated teeth out of 40. 2) Sex determination was possible in 12 endodontic treated teeth out of 40 by detection of X-Y homologous amelogenin gene 3) F13A01 locus was detected in 6 endodontic treated teeth out of 40, observed 4 alleles(3.2, 4, 5, 6) and 5 genotypes(3.2-3.2, 3.2-4, 3.2-5, 4-5, 6-6). 4) LPL locus was detected in 7 endodontic treated teeth out of 40, observed 3 alleles(10, 11, 12) and 3 genotypes(10-10, 10-12, 11-12). From the above results DNA extraction, sex determination, amplification of STR locus F13A01, and LPL gene were possible in the endodontic treated teeth and it was suggested that endodontic treated teeth were useful and applicatable as molecular biological samples for individual identification.
전류제어형 PWM 인버어터―유도전동기 위치제어의 신경회로망 응용

이 논문은 전력변환기 시스템 모델링에 대한 신경회로망 사용을 기술하였다. Bp 알고리즘은 PWM 인버어터에 의해 구동되는 유도전동기의 on-off 패턴제어를 모델화하기 위해 처음으로 사용되었다. 신경회로망의 한 잇점은 본질적으로 병렬처리 이어서 그 결과 직렬인 디지털 컴퓨터보다 훨씬 빠르다. 게다가 신경회로망은 인버어터에 대해 학습능력이 있다. 제안된 방법의 타당성을 디지털 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션을 통하여 확인하였다. This paper discribes the use of neural networks for modeling power converter system. A back propagation(BP) algorithm is used firstly to model on-off pattern control of PWM inverter fed induction motor and, as a result, can solve problems much faster than a serial digital computer. Furthermore, neural networks have ability to learn for inverter. The validity of proposed method is confirm through the digital computer simulation.
Clinical Experience of Rigid Bronchoscopy in Single Center

Background: The aim of this study was to analyze clinical situations requiring rigid bronchoscopy and evaluate usefulness of rigid bronchoscopic intervention in benign or malignant airway disorders. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 29 patients who underwent rigid bronchoscopy from November 2007 to February 2011 at St. Paul's Hospital, The Catholic University of Korea School of Medicine. Results: Of the 29 patients, the most frequent underlying etiology was benign stenosis of trachea (n=20). Of those 20 patients, 16 had post-intubation tracheal stenosis (PITS), 2 had tracheal stenosis due to inhalation burn (IBTS) and other 2 had obstructive fibrinous tracheal pseudomembrane (OFTP). Other etiologies were airway malignancy (n=6), endobronchial stenosis due to tuberculosis (n=2), and foreign body (n=1). For treatment, silicone stent insertion was done in 16 cases of PITS and IBTS and mechanical removal was performed in 2 cases of OFTP. In 6 cases of malignant airway obstruction mechanical debulking was performed and silicone stents were inserted additionally in 2 cases. Balloon dilatation and electrocautery were used in 2 cases of endobronchial stenosis due to tuberculosis. In all cases of stent, airway obstructive symptom improved immediately. Granulation tissue formation was the most common complication. Conclusion: Tracheal stenosis was most common indication and silicone stenting was most common procedure of rigid bronchoscopy in our center. Rigid bronchoscopic procedures, at least tracheal silicone stenting, should be included in pulmonary medicine fellowship programs because it is a very effective and indispensable method to relieve critical airway obstruction which needs training to learn.

Purpose: This retrospective study was carried out to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of radiation therapy (RT) with/without cisplatin-based chemotherapy in nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC). Materials and Methods: One hundred forty six patients with NPC received curative RT and/or cisplatin-based chemotherapy. Thirty-nine patients were treated with induction chemotherapy (IC), including cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil followed by RT. Another 63 patients were treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) using cisplatin, and 22 patients were treated with IC followed by CCRT. The remaining 22 patients were treated with RT alone. Results: One hundred four (80.0%) patients achieved complete response (CR), and 23 (17.7%) patients achieved partial response (PR). The patterns of failure were: locoregional recurrences in 21.2% and distant metastases in 17.1%. Five-year overall survival (OS) and progression free survival (PFS) were 50.7% and 45.0%, respectively. Multivariate Cox stepwise regression analysis revealed CR to chemoradiotherapy to be a powerful prognostic factor for OS. CR to chemoradiotherapy and completion of radiation according to the time schedule were favorable prognostic factors for PFS. A comparison of each treatment group (IC → RT vs. CCRT vs. IC → CCRT vs. RT alone) revealed no significant differences in the OS or PFS. However, subgroup analysis showed significant differences in both OS and DFS in favor of the combined chemoradiotherapy group compared with RT alone, for stage IV and T3-4 tumors. Grade 3-4 toxicities were more common in the combined chemoradiotherapy arm, particularly in the CCRT group. Conclusions: This study was limited in that it was a retrospective study, much time was required to collect patients, and there were imbalances in the number of patients in each treatment group. Combined chemoradiotherapy remarkably prolonged the OS and PFS in subgroup patients with stage IV or T3-4 NPC.
자궁경부암에서 Cdc25A, Cdc25B 및 Cdc25C의 발현

Objective: This study was undertaken to quantitatively detect Cdc25A, Cdc25B and Cdc25C in cervical carcinoma and determine the relationship between the expression of mRNA and protein of cell division cycle (Cdc)25 phosphatase and various clinicopathologic prognostic factors of cervical carcinoma. Methods: 39 patients diagnosed with cervical carcinoma between February 2000 to March 2005 and 10 patients with benign gynecologic disease were enrolled in this study. A reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western blot analysis were used to analyze the expression of Cdc25 phosphatase mRNA and protein in fresh invasive cervical cancer tissue and normal cervix tissue. Results: The mRNA expressions of Cdc25A, Cdc25B and Cdc25C in the cancer tissues were significantly greater than in the control (p=0.02, 0.01, 0.02), respectively. A Western blot analysis yielded same results (p=0.01, 0.02, 0.01). There were also significant relationships between the age and the Cdc25B mRNA expression (p=0.03), between the cell type and the Cdc25C mRNA expression (p=0.04). However, other clinicopathologic prognostic factors including stage, subtype, SCC Ag level, DNA flow cytometry, lymph node metastasis, lymphovascular space invasion and HPV positivity were not statistically significant. Conclusion: Our results show that Cdc25A, Cdc25B and Cdc25C expression levels were significantly greater in cervical cancer patient group than in those of control group. Thus Cdc25 phosphatase might play an important role in carcinogenesis of cervical carcinoma. Further studies based on the correlation between Cdc25 phosphatase and survival rate would be need to support Cdc25 phosphatase as a prognostic factor of cervical carcinoma.
