Streptococcus pneumoniae remains a major cause of bacteremia, meningitis, penumonia, sinusitis, and otitis media. Although this organism was originally exquisitely susceptible to penicillin, the last two decades have witnessed the emergence of strains resistant to penicillin as well as other antimicrobial agents in many parts of the world. 102 isolates obtained from patients with invasive pneumococcal disease have been examined the susceptibility to various antibiotics. 52% to 85% of isolates tested were resistant to various antibiotics. These data suggest that more powerful antibiotics should be used for the treatment of pneumococal infection.

A vibration monitoring system for a small class of wind turbine (W/T) is established and operated. The monitoring system consists of monolithic integrated chip accelerometer for vibration monitoring, anemometers for wind data acquisition and auxiliary sensors for atmospheric data. Using the monitoring system, vibration response of a 6kW W/T generator is investigated. Acceleration data of the W/T tower under various operation condition is acquired in real time using LabVIEW and is remotely transferred from the test site to the laboratory in school by internet. Vibration state of the tower structure is diagnosed within the operating speed range. Resonance frequency range of the test model is investigated with the wind speed data of the test site.

DnaK is known to be highly conserved in all species and is a major immunogen in Streptococcus pneumoniae. To elucidate the role of dnaK in S. pneumoniae, dnaK was cloned in Escherichia coli using a homologous dnaK probe generated by PCR. The His-tagged DnaK was overexpressed in soluble form and purified from E. coli. Alignment of the deduced DnaK amino acid sequence from nucleotide sequences of the cloned DnaK revealed high homology with DnaK analogues in E. coli(53%) and Staphylococcus aureus(73%). However, anti-pneumococcal DnaK antiserum did not crossreact with DnaK analogs in E. coli, S.aureus and human cells suggesting that pneumococcal DnaK might be a good canadidate as a vanccine. ⓒ 1998 Federation of European Microbiological Societies. A Method to Estimate Bending Moments Acting on a Wind Turbine Blade Specimen Using FBG Sensors

A new method to estimate bending moments of a blade specimen having a constant cross section throughout was developed using fiber Bragg grating sensors. Based on theories of solid mechanics, strains of the simplified model of the specimen were evaluated for various pitching angles and the forces exerted. It was found by both theory and experiment that at least two FBG sensors are necessary to find out the magnitude and direction of the load acting on the specimen from measured longitudinal strain information. A method was also found to estimate the flatwise and edgewise bending moments from the measured strains. An experimental setup that enables pitching the specimen from $0^{\circ}$ to $180^{\circ}$ was used to experimentally verify the theoretical findings. The theory and the experimental results showed a fair agreement.
High Incidence of Multidrug-Resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae in South Korea

Streptococcus pneumoniae was isolated from patients with bacteremia, meningitis, pneumonia, and otitis media and used to determine susceptibility to various antibiotics. Of 105 isolates, 51% to 83% were resistant to 6 antibiotics (i.e., the percentages of resistance to penicillin, ampicillin, cephalothin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, and erythromycin were 78%, 67%, 51%, 56%, 83% and 58% respectively). Also 66 of the 105 isolates were multidrug resistant. Seventy-eight percent of multidrug-resistant strains were highly resistant to tetracycline (minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC] ≥50㎍/ml), and 39% of multidrug-resistant strains were also highly resistant to erythromycin (MIC≥128㎍/ml) However, only 4% of the 105 isolates were resistant to cefotaxime.

<P>Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is the predominant risk factor for chronic hepatitis B (CHB), liver cirrhosis (LC) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Recently, several genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of CHB identified human leukocyte antigen (HLA) loci, including HLA-DP and HLA-DQ in Asian populations, as being associated with the risk of CHB. To confirm and identify the host genetic factors related to CHB infection, we performed another GWAS using a higher-density chip in Korean CHB carriers. We analyzed 1400 samples from Korean population (400 CHB cases and 1000 population controls) using a higher-density GWAS chip [1 140 419 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs)]. In subsequent replication analysis, we further analyzed in an independent study of a Korean CHB cohort consisting of 2909 Korean samples (971 cases and 1938 controls). Logistic regression methods were used for statistical analysis adjusting for age and sex as covariates. This study identified two new risk-associated loci for CHB on the HLA region of chromosome 6, e.g. rs652888 on euchromatic histone-lysine-methyltransferase 2 (EHMT2, <I>P</I> = 7.07 × 10<SUP>−13</SUP>) and rs1419881 on transcription factor 19 (TCF19, <I>P</I> = 1.26 × 10<SUP>−18</SUP>). Conditional analysis with nearby HLA CHB loci that were previously known, confirmed the independent genetic effects of these two loci on CHB.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B>: The GWAS and the subsequent validation study identified new variants associated with the risk of CHB. These findings may advance the understanding of genetic susceptibility to CHB.</P>

위장관 중복낭은 주로 소아에서 발견되는 드문 선천성 기형으로 위장관 어디에서나 발생될 수 있으나 회장 말단이 가장 흔히 발생되는 장소이며 십이지장에서 발생하는 경우는 4~12%로 주로 구부와 2부에 국한되어 발생한다. 임상양상은 장 폐색이 주된 소견이며 이외 폐쇄성 황달, 췌장염, 출혈, 및 천공 등이 드물게 나타날 수 있다. 본 증례는 성인에서 발견되고 병리학적으로 확진된 십이지장 중복낭 3예로 각각 폐쇄성 황달 및 췌장염, 재발성 췌장염, 출혈과 천

In this study, we found a relationship between wind shear exponent, α, and a few factors such as the wind speed, V, ruggedness index(RIX), and the Weibull shape parameter, k of sites in complex terrain in Korea. Wind shear exponents in main wind directions were calculated using wind speed data measured for one year from various heights of eleven meteorological masts in Gangwon province. It was found from the analysis that the reciprocal of the wind shear exponent can be expressed by an exponentially decaying function with respect to a multiple of V, RIX and k. This result is considered useful to be used to characterize wind characteristics of specific sites in complex terrain in Korea with limited information.
