Background: Effective penetration of photosensitizer is an essential step in photodynamic therapy (PDT). There have been trials of several methods, including laser treatment, to facilitate prompt and sufficiently deep transdermal drug delivery. Objectives: This study was performed to evaluate the effects of nonablative fractional laser pretreatment on aminolevulinic acid (ALA) penetration of the skin. Methods: Twelve identical treatment areas of 1 × 1 cm2 on the backs of 10 healthy male subjects were mapped. Each area received laser treatment with a different energy and incubation with ALA for different times. Laser treatment was performed with a 1550 nm fractional erbium glass laser, and the laser energy was set to 20 and 50 mJ with a spot density of 50/cm2. ALA incubation time was set to 30, 60, or 180 min. Porphyrin fluorescence was measured. Results: Nonablative fractional laser-pretreated areas showed significantly increased porphyrin fluorescence compared to non-pretreated areas. Laser energy strength and ALA incubation time were positively correlated with ALA absorption. Conclusion: Nonablative fractional laser treatment effectively enhanced ALA skin penetration. Pretreatment with a nonablative fractional laser can be used for ALA-PDT to achieve higher therapeutic efficacy and shortened ALA incubation times with minimal skin barrier disruption compared to ablative laser.

Background: Senile gluteal dermatoses (SGD) is the hyperkeratotic lichenified skin lesions around of the gluteal cleft which was first reported in Japan. Distinctive skin lesions of senile gluteal dermatoses are brownish scalyplaques on the gluteal cleft and both sides of the buttocks assuming a pattern of “three corners of triangle”. Objectives: Ulcers developed with SGD have not been reported and are easy to be confused with pressure ulcer. In this study, we evaluated the patients of senile gluteal dermatoses with ulcer. Methods: We retrospectively collected and investigated the patients of SGD with ulcers from 2010 to 2014 year. Results: The mean age of seven patients was 73.3 years (age range, 67-87 years), and male/female ratio is 0.4(2/5), and mean body mass index (BMI) was 22.4. All patients complained of symptom, 2 of tenderness, 4 of pain and 1 of mild itching. Duration of SGD was various from 2 weeks to 10 years. Duration of these treatments was various from 2 weeks to 6 weeks and the ulcers of all cases were recovered completely. Conclusion: The ulcers developed with SGD are thoughtto be produced by mainly friction more than pressure force in elderly peoples, and their locations different from that of pressure ulcers. And it is important to notice that these SGD ulcers have relatively shorter duration and better response of treatment than that of pressure ulcers, so it is necessary to avoid excessive treatment.

<P>Layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanomaterials of uniform size and homogeneous distribution are successfully developed in agarose hydrogel through the electrical double migration method. To grow LDH crystals in agarose matrix, both cationic (Ni2+, Ga3+) and anionic precursors (OH– and CO32–) of LDH are simultaneously transported from solution to agarose hydrogel through electric potential, resulting in the in situ crystal growth of LDH. X-ray diffraction patterns, X-ray absorption spectra, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopic images confirm that the developed LDH is ∼15 nm in size and had a well-defined crystal structure. Scanning electron microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering spectroscopy showed homogeneous arrays of LDH nanocrystals along agarose sheets with homogeneous distribution. On the basis of the characterization results, we suggest that crystal nuclei are first developed on the agarose chain, and then LDHs homogeneously grow along sheets of agarose matrix.</P><P>Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) of uniform size and homogeneous distribution are developed in agarose hydrogel through the electrical double migration method.
