Recently, there has been a huge demand for substituting wood fiber with non-wood fibers. Representative non-wood fibers are hemp, flax, mulberry, abaca, kenaf, ramiel, mulberry, and jute. These fibers have high tensile strength, elongation and tensile energy absorption. There-fore, this paper is aimed to compare chemical compositions of these non-wood fibers for producing viscose rayon. We analyzed chemical compositions such as α-cellulose, holocellulose, lignin, extractives, and ash content to identify which material is appropriate to produce viscose rayon.
Preparation of high strength paper from kenaf bast fiber

Kenaf bast fiber is non-wood fiber that can be an alternative fibrous source for papermaking since having high physical strength. Non-wood fibers are diverse and have different characteristics, so it needs specific pulping or bleaching process, even on farming treatment. In this study, the kraft pulping process have considered and handsheets with wood pulp and kenaf bast fibers were prepared. The proper mixing ratio of wood pulp and kenaf bast fiber with dry-strength agent was analyzed in term of physical and mechanical strength properties.
