A ten months old, female Yorkshire terrier weighing 2.88 kg referred to veterinary teaching hospital of college of veterinary medicine, Konkuk University because of syncope, cough and dyspnea. First hematological and serum chemical test revealed thrombocytopenia, mild anemia, and increase of concentration of ALP (195 U/L). On 57 days later, second hematological and serum chemical test revealed polycythemia, increase of concentration of ALP (211 U/L), and Tchol (387 mg/dl). Right atrium enlargement, main pulmonary artery bulge and cardiomegaly (VHS = 11.5) were observed in radiographic findings. Ultrasonographic images showed both right and left ventricular dilation and turbulent flow between the descending aorta and the main pulmonary artery in color Doppler imaging. ECG showed left ventricular enlargement, SA block, and electrical alternant. Thoracotomy was performed through left fourth intercostal incision under isoflurane anesthesia. Patent ductus arteriosus was double ligated with 1-0 silk. Cough and dyspnea disappeared on 5 days after operation. Turbulent flow was not found in color doppler imaging of ultrasonography on 10 days after operation. Ten months later after the operation, syncope could not exist any more.

The early detection of the bearing defects in rotating machinery is very important since the critical failure of bearing causes a machinery shutdown. However it is not easy to detect the vibration signal caused by the initial defects of bearing because of the high level of random noise. A signal processing technique, called the adaptive line enhancer(ALE) as one of adaptive filter, is used in this study. This technique is to eliminate random noise with little a prior knowledge of the noise and signal characteristics. Also we propose the optimal methods for selecting the three main ALE parameters such as correlation length, filter order and adaptation constant. Vibration signals for three abnormal bearings, including inner and outer raceways and ball defects, were acquired by Anderon(angular derivative of radius on) meter. The experimental results showed that ALE is very useful for detecting the bearing defective signals masked by random noise.

Background : Arterial blood gas analysis is the most comon exam in intensive care unit. In this study, the frequency of blood gas analysis and the amount of blood loss after Blood Gas Analysis in Intensive Care Unit were observed. Methods : From November 1999 to February 2000, 115 patients admitted to intensive care unit at Soonchunhyang university Kumi hospital were studied prospectively for the frequency of blood gas analysis and the amount of blood loss after blood gas analysis in Intensive Care Unit. Results : The mean value of frequency of blood gas analysis was 6.41±6.49 and the mean value of amount of blood loss after blood gas analysis was 0.78ml. This was lower than that of other foreign reports. The patients with ventilator therapy above 24 hours showed higher frequency of blood gas analysis than that of not applied ventilator patients. Pulse oxymetry was applied to all patients and the frequency of blood gas analysis was decreased due to the use of strict pulse oxymetry. Conclusion : Doctors and nurses in intensive care unit keep in mind that adequate blood sampling is needed for the decrease of blood loss. Education and protocol for the decrease of blood loss after arterial blood gas analysis may be necessary.

<P>Abstract</P><P>Objective </P><P>To examine the feasibility and accuracy of a handheld rebound tonometer, TonoVet<SUP>®</SUP>, and to compare the intraocular pressure (IOP) readings of the TonoVet<SUP>®</SUP> with those of an applanation tonometer, TonoPen XL<SUP>®</SUP>, in normal Eurasian Eagle owls.</P><P>Animals studied </P><P>Ten clinically normal Eurasian Eagle owls (20 eyes).</P><P>Procedures </P><P>Complete ocular examinations, using slit-lamp biomicroscopy and indirect ophthalmoscopy, were conducted on each raptor. The IOP was measured bilaterally using a rebound tonometer followed by a topical anesthetic agent after 1 min. The TonoPen XL<SUP>®</SUP> tonometer was applied in both eyes 30 s following topical anesthesia.</P><P>Results </P><P>The mean ± SD IOP obtained by rebound tonometer was 10.45 ± 1.64 mmHg (range 7–14 mmHg), and by applanation tonometer was 9.35 ± 1.81 mmHg (range 6–12 mmHg). There was a significant difference (<I>P =</I> 0.001) in the IOP obtained from both tonometers. The linear regression equation describing the relationship between both devices was <I>y</I> = 0.669<I>x</I> + 4.194 (<I>x</I> = TonoPen XL<SUP>®</SUP> and <I>y</I> = TonoVet<SUP>®</SUP>). The determination coefficient (<I>r</I><SUP>2</SUP>) was <I>r</I><SUP>2</SUP> = 0.550.</P><P>Conclusions </P><P>The results suggest that readings from the rebound tonometer significantly overestimated those from the applanation tonometer and that the rebound tonometer was tolerated well because of the rapid and minimal stress-inducing method of tonometry in the Eurasian Eagle owls, even without topical anesthesia. Further studies comparing TonoVet<SUP>®</SUP> with manometric measurements may be necessary to employ rebound tonometer for routine clinical use in Eurasian Eagle owls.</P>
Molecular Cloning and Expression of DMRT Gene in Protogynous Wrasse, Halichoeres tenuispinis

The sex differentiation of fishes occurs under the control of genetic and various environmental factors. DM-domain containing genes are novel zinc finger transcription factors and play key roles in sex determination. In order to isolate the wrasse DMRT (wDMRT) cDNA from the protogynous wrasse (Halichoeres tenuispinnis), the wrasse testis cDNA library was screened using the P-labeled PCR products, which were amplified with the degenerate primers from conserved DM-domain regions of several DMRT genes. Among a few positives obtained through screening, the full length wDMRT cDNA of 2.9kb size encoding a predicted 300 amino acid residues was isolated. The sequence analysis exhibited 60%, 43% sequence identity with rainbow trout and tilapia DMRT1, respectively. RT-PCR assay showed that wDMRT was expressed specifically in male testis. Also, wDMRT gene was strongly expressed in May during reproductive season, when the reproductivity of wrasse is most active. This results suggested that wDMRT gene function in testis differentiation The conserved DM-domain regions were amplified using PCR from DMRT genes of several species among Labridae, and their sequences were determined. The sequence of DM-domain region of Halichoeres. tenuispinis was identical to those of Pseudolabrus japonicus, Pteragogus flagellifera, and showed 94% identity with that of Halichoeres poecioptrerus.
An Efficient Multipaction Analysis of an Output Multiplexer for Satellite Applications

In this paper, an efficient multipaction analysis method of a manifold multiplexer for satellite applications is presented. While FEM(Finite Element Method) is used for the multipaction analysis of the lowpass filter, the equivalent circuit model is used for the analysis of the channel filters and the manifold. Employing equivalent circuit model for multipaction analysis takes less time than using EM(Electromagnetic) field analysis method while keeping the accuracy of the multipaction analysis. This present analysis method is applied to the manifold multiplexer for Ka-band satellite transponders and the results show that the present method is as accurate as the conventional EM field analysis method.
