Experiments were conducted to understand the direct and indirect effects of temperature and elevated CO2 (eCO2), on tritrophic interactions of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata subsp. unguiculata L.), legume aphid Aphis craccivora Koch and coccinellid predator Menochilus sexmaculatus Fab. Reduction of the leaf nitrogen (6%), amino acid (6%) and protein (7%) of cowpea foliage with increased carbon (13%) and C:N ratio (21%) at eCO2 over aCO2 indicated the dilution of biochemical constituents at first trophic level. Shortened development time, DT and increment of reproductive rate, RR at eCO2 over ambient CO2(aCO2)was significant with increase in temperature from 20 to 35 °C. Reduction of the mean degree day, DD requirement of both nymphal (75.79 ± 15.163) and adult stages (157.15 ± 67.04) at eCO2 over aCO2 and same was reflected in the summation DD for both the stages at eCO2 (232.96 ± 80.32)and aCO2 (247.07 ± 64.77) across six temperatures. The ‘rm’ and ‘Ro’ increased gradually with increase in temperature followed the non-linear trend and reached maximum values at 27 °C with shortened ‘T’ across 20 to 35 °C temperatures at eCO2 indicating the significant variation of growth and development at the second trophic level. Decreased grub duration (23%) with increased predation capacity (19%) of M. sexmaculatus on A. craccivora at eCO2 over ambient was noted, indicating the incidence of A. craccivora is likely to be higher with increased predation in the future climate change scenario.

<P>For the first time, the consequences of organic-inorganic hybrid nanoparticle polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane-polyethylene glycol (POSS-PEG(n = 4)) on the physicochemical and electrochemical properties of polyethylene oxide) (PEO)-lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) based nanocomposite solid polymer electrolyte (NSPE) membranes were systematically prepared and utilized as an active separator for battery applications. The thermal stability and structural properties of the prepared NSPE membranes were analyzed by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry (TG) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. The morphological changes by POSS-PEG in polymer electrolyte membranes were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy,(FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The incorporation of POSS-PEG greatly enhanced the ionic conductivity, mechanical integrity and compatibility. The maximum ambient temperature ionic conductivity was found to be in the range of 7.28 x 10(-5) S/cm for 40 wt% POSS-PEG. Finally, the solid state lithium cell was assembled as Li/NSPE/LiCoO2. The cell delivered a maximum discharge capacity of 187 mAh g(-1) at 0.1C-rate with very good capacity retention up to 50 cycles. The structural, compositional, morphological and optical properties of In2S3 thin films, prepared by thermal evaporation technique and annealed in sulfur ambient at different temperatures have been investigated. The grazing incident X-ray diffraction patterns have indicated polycrystalline form and predominantly cubic structure of annealed In2S3 films. The scanning electron microscopy revealed textured surface with uniformly distributed grains and the grain size increased with increase of annealing temperature. The optical parameters of the films have been determined using conventional transmission and reflection spectra as well as from surface photovoltage measurements.

<P>The temperature-dependent electrical properties and carrier transport mechanisms of tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH)-treated Ni/Au/Al2O3/GaN metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) diodes have been investigated by current-voltage (I-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements. The experimental results reveal that the barrier height (I-V) increases whereas the ideality factor decreases with increasing temperature. The TMAH-treated Ni/Au/Al2O3/GaN MIS diode showed nonideal behaviors which indicate the presence of a nonuniform distribution of interface states (N (SS)) and effect of series resistance (R (S)). The obtained R (S) and N (SS) were found to decrease with increasing temperature. Furthermore, it was found that different transport mechanisms dominated in the TMAH-treated Ni/Au/Al2O3/GaN MIS diode. At 150 K to 250 K, Poole-Frenkel emission (PFE) was found to be responsible for the reverse leakage, while Schottky emission (SE) was the dominant mechanism at high electric fields in the temperature range from 300 K to 400 K. Feasible energy band diagrams and possible carrier transport mechanisms for the TMAH-treated Ni/Au/Al2O3/GaN MIS diode are discussed based on PFE and SE.</P>

The feasibility of acetylation of glycerol with acetic acid was investigated employing CeO2–ZrO2, CeO2–Al2O3, SO42/CeO2–ZrO2, and SO42/CeO2–Al2O3 solid acid catalysts to synthesize monoacetin, diacetin and triacetin having interesting applications as bioadditives for petroleum fuels. Intensive physicochemical and surface characterization of the prepared catalysts were performed using XRD,BET surface area, ammonia-TPD and Raman spectroscopy techniques. Characterization results revealed that impregnated sulfate ions strongly influence the physicochemical characteristics of the investigated mixed oxide catalysts. Among various catalysts investigated, the SO42/CeO2–ZrO2 combination catalyst exhibited superior catalytic activity under mild conditions. The effect of various parameters such as reaction temperature, molar ratio of acetic acid to glycerol, catalyst wt% and time-on-stream were studied over the SO42/CeO2–ZrO2 catalyst to optimize the reaction conditions. Catalyst reusability was also carried out to understand its stability.
Molecular investigation of tick-borne pathogens in ticks from grazing cattle in Korea

This study was carried out to identify the tick species that infest grazing cattle and to determine the presence of tick-borne pathogens transmitted by these ticks in Korea. A total of 903 ticks (categorized into 566 tick pools) were collected from five provinces during 2010-2011. The most prevalent tick species was Haemaphysalis longicornis, followed by three Ixodes spp. ticks. The collected ticks were infected with both rickettsial and protozoan pathogens. In all, 469 (82.9%) tick pools tested positive for the Anaplasma/Ehrlichia 16S rRNA gene, whereas 67 (11.8%) were positive for the Babesia/Theileria 18S rRNA gene. Among the rickettsial pathogens, E. canis was detected with the highest rate (22.3%), followed by A. platys (20%), E. chaffeensis (19.4%), E. ewingii (19.3%), Rickettsia sp. (12.4%), A. phagocytophilum (5.5%) and E. muris (0.5%). Among the protozoan pathogens, T. equi was detected with the highest rate (7.2%), followed by T. sergenti/T. buffeli (3.7%) and B. caballi (0.35%). Simultaneous infections with up to seven pathogens were also identified. In particular, ticks infected with rickettsial pathogens were also infected with protozoan pathogens (22 samples). All five provinces investigated infected with tick-borne pathogens.

<P>The deposition techniques of quantum dots (QDs) have great influence on the photovoltaic performances of quantum dot sensitised solar cells (QDSSCs). In this study, we report CdS/CdSe sensitised TiO2 solar cells focussing on the influence of two commonly used in situ QD deposition techniques (SILAR: successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction and CBD: chemical bath deposition). In addition to this, the QDSSC performance is enhanced due to better light harvesting capability of PbS quantum dots and makes large accumulation of photo-injected electrons in the conduction band of TiO2. When compared to power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.58% was obtained for PbS/CBD-CdS/CBD-CdSe cells when compared to PbS/SILAR-CdS/SILAR-CdSe. With chemical bath deposition, we achieved high surface coverage of QDs, which contributes to the increase in photocurrent,open circuit voltage and fill factor. Impedance spectroscopy revealed that the PbS/CBD-CdS/CBD-CdSe reduces recombination and increases charge collection efficiency and a long electron lifetime was achieved. To associate the assembling of QDs with the performance of QDSSCs a methodical characterization of morphology, optical and electro-chemical properties and its stability has been studied. Prevalence of Phytophthora Blight of Pigeonpea in the Deccan Plateau of India

drechsleri f. sp. cajani is the third potentially important disease of pigeonpea in the Deccan Plateau (DP) of India after wilt and sterility mosaic. In the rainy-season of 2005, an outbreak of PB was seen throughout DP. To quantify the incidence and spread of the disease, a systematic survey was conducted in the major pigeonpea growing regions of DP during the crop season 2005. Attempts were made to determine the effect of cropping systems on the PB development and identify resistant cultivars, if any, grown by farmers and on research farms. Widespread incidence of PB was recorded on improved, and or local cultivars grown in different intercropping systems. Majority of improved cultivars grown at research farms were found susceptible to PB (>10% disease incidence). Pigeonpea intercropped with groundnut, black gram and coriander had less disease incidence (≤10%). Three wilt and SM resistant pigeonpea cultivars KPL 96053, ICPL 99044, and ICPL 93179 were found resistant (<10%) to PB as well. However, their resistance to PB needs confirmation under optimum disease development environments.
