Advances in Understanding the “Perfect Monsoon-influenced Typhoon”: Summary from International Conference on Typhoon Morakot (2009)

        Cheng-Shang Lee,Chun-Chieh Wu,Tai-Chi Chen Wang,Russell L. Elsberry 한국기상학회 2011 Asia-Pacific Journal of Atmospheric Sciences Vol.47 No.3

Typhoon Morakot (2009) produced 2855 mm of rain and was the deadliest typhoon to impact Taiwan with 619 deaths and 76missing persons, including a landslide that wiped out an entire village. While Morakot did not exceed the heaviest 24-h rain record, the combination of heavy rain and long duration that led to the record accumulation is attributed to the southwest summer monsoon influence on the typhoon. Thus, a special combination of factors was involved in the Morakot disaster: (i) Strong southwesterly monsoon winds; (ii) Convergence between the typhoon circulation and monsoon flow to form an east-west oriented convective band over the Taiwan Strait that was quasi-stationary and long-lasting; (iii) A typhoon in a specific location relative to the Central Mountain Range and moving slowly; and (iv) Steep topography that provided rapid lifting of the moist air stream. The contributions of each of these four factors in leading to the Morakot disaster are reviewed primarily based on new research presented at the International Conference on Typhoon Morakot (2009). Historical data sets, new Doppler radar observations, and numerical modeling have advanced the understanding of the special conditions of monsoon-influenced typhoons such as Morakot. This research is also leading to modifications of existing and development of new forecasting tools. Gaps in scientific understanding, limits to the predictability, and requirements for advanced forecast guidance tools are described that are challenges to improved warnings of these extreme precipitation and flooding events in monsoon-influenced typhoons.

      • Printed photonic elements: nanoimprinting and beyond

        Zhang, Cheng,Subbaraman, Harish,Li, Qiaochu,Pan, Zeyu,Ok, Jong G.,Ling, Tao,Chung, Chi-Jui,Zhang, Xingyu,Lin, Xiaohui,Chen, Ray T.,Guo, L. Jay Royal Society of Chemistry 2016 Journal of Materials Chemistry C Vol.4 No.23

In order to manufacture large-scale photonic devices of various dimensions at a low cost, a number of patterning techniques have been developed. Nanoimprint lithography is among the most promising given its unique advantages, such as high resolution, fast processing speed, high throughput, compatibility with diverse materials, and low cost. This review covers various aspects of nanoimprint lithography, including its operational principles, material requirements, and different ways of implementation. Nanoimprint lithography facilitates numerous high-performance and low-cost photonic elements, including optical interconnects, sensors, solar cells, and metamaterials. In addition, other related patterning techniques, together with their utilization for photonic device fabrication and their integration with nanoimprint lithography, are briefly discussed.

        한국(韓國)에서의 정관수술(精管手術)과 심혈관질환(心血管疾患)으로 인한 사망(死亡)과의 관련성(關聯性) 연구(硏究)

This community-based case-control study was carried out in four cities in South Korea to examine whether vasectomy is associated with a long-term increased risk of cardiovascular death in Korean men. Korea was chosen for study because of its long established vasectomy program (>20 years), the relatively high vasectomy prevalence (12% among adult males) and its location in the Orient. Cases are 413 men who died at age 35~65 between October 1982 and September 1983, with an underlying cause of death, as reported in the death certificate, of ischemic heart disease ( N=29, ICD 410~414), non-traumatic cerebrovascular disease (N=295, ICD 430~438)or hypertensive disease (N=89, ICD 401~405). Each case was matched on age and parity to a living male from the same neighborhood. Wives of cases and controls were interviewed at home as surrogates. Univariate analysis of the association of vasectomy and cardiovascular death revealed an odds ratio of 1.4 (95% CLs=0.8~2.4). Multivariate logistic regression analysis, controlling for potentially confounding variables, revealed a lower adjusted odds ratio of 1.0 (95% CLs=0.4~2.4). Thus we did not detect an association between vasectomy and cardiovascular death in Korean men, nor did we detect a statistically significant increased risk for those subjects who had a vasectomy 15 years or longer (odds ratio= 1.3, 95% CLs=0.4~4.4). The results coincide with those from Western epidemiologic studies and do not support the vasectomy-atherosclerosis hypothesis originating from animal research.
