Haptoglobin Concentration in the Cord Blood of Uninfected Korean Newborns

Objective: Highly sensitive haptoglobin measurement should be used in neonates because the haptoglobin concentration in neonates is lower than that of adults. The aim of this study was to establish the reference values of haptoglobin levels in the cord blood of uninfected neonates. Methods: The cord blood of 29 preterm and 51 term babies was collected, and data from the mother and the newborn were recorded. The haptoglobin concentrations of 80 cord blood samples were simultaneously measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA; Assaypro, St Charles, MO, USA) and immunoturbidimetry assay (Roche Diagnostics, Basel, Switzerland). C-reactive protein (CRP) was also measured by immunoturbidimetry assay (Roche Diagnostics, Switzerland). Results: Mean values of CRP and ELISA haptoglobin were not significantly different between preterm and term babies. The 2.5 percentile and 97.5 percentile values of ELISA haptoglobin concentration were as follows: 80 neonates, 0.01 mg/dL and 0.59 mg/dL; 29 preterm babies, 0.08 mg/dL and 0.18 mg/dL; and 51 term babies, 0.07 mg/dL and 0.23 mg/dL. There were no differences in ELISA haptoglobin concentration according to maternal underlying diseases, delivery method, usage of antibiotics or steroids before delivery, gestational age, gender of baby, or twin gestation. Conclusion: A highly sensitive haptoglobin method should be used to determine the haptoglobin concentration in Korean newborns because the reference values of cord blood haptoglobin concentration in Korean newborns are less than the lower detection limit for commonly used immunoturbidimetric haptoglobin measurement methods.

Recent development of lithium ion batteries for vehicles industries have led to a boom in lithium exploration and development for the new generation of batteries. One of the cheapest sources of lithium is the brines hosted in the aquifers of the arid intermontane-closed salar basins. Because the resource is a fluid, with the attendant problems of in-aquifer mixing, reorganization, and lower recovery factors compared with most metalliferous and industrial mineral deposits due to reliance on pumping of the brine from wells for extraction, existing codes for filing resource and reserve estimates require new approach for these prospects. Evaluation of brine resources is complex and requires participation of a variety of qualified experts such as hydrogeologists, geologists, geochemists and chemical engineers. The technical reports disclosing the results of these estimates should reflect the inputs of multi-disciplinary approaches. The requirements for brine resource and reserve evaluation, drawing on several examples from the experiences in the Central Andes are reviewed in this paper.

<P>Lamellar structured ultrathin manganese oxide nanoplates have been synthesized from thermal decomposition of manganese(II) acetylacetonate in the presence of 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene, which promoted two-dimensional (2-D) growth by acting not only as a strongly binding surfactant but also as a structure-directing agent. Ultrathin manganese oxide nanoplates with a thickness of about 1 nm were assembled into a lamellar structure, and the width of the nanoplates could be controlled from 8 to 70 nm by using various coordinating solvents. X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra at the Mn K edge clearly showed that the nanoplates are mainly composed of Mn(II) species with octahedral symmetry. These hydrophobic manganese oxide nanoplates were ligand-exchanged with amine-terminated poly(ethyleneglycol) to generate water-dispersible nanoplates and applied to T1 contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). They exhibited a very high longitudinal relaxivity (<I>r</I><SUB>1</SUB>) value of up to 5.5 mM<SUP>–1</SUP>s<SUP>–1</SUP> derived from their high concentration of manganese ions exposed on the surface, and strong contrast enhancement of <I>in vitro</I> and <I>in vivo</I> MR images was observed with a very low dose.</P><P>We report on the large-scale synthesis of manganese oxide nanoplates of subnanometer thickness. The nanoplates were applied to a T1 magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent after ligand exchange. <P>Uniform and extremely small-sized iron oxide nanoparticles (ESIONs) of < 4 nm were synthesized via the thermal decomposition of iron–oleate complex in the presence of oleyl alcohol. Oleyl alcohol lowered the reaction temperature by reducing iron–oleate complex, resulting in the production of small-sized nanoparticles. XRD pattern of 3 nm-sized nanoparticles revealed maghemite crystal structure. These nanoparticles exhibited very low magnetization derived from the spin-canting effect. The hydrophobic nanoparticles can be easily transformed to water-dispersible and biocompatible nanoparticles by capping with the poly(ethylene glycol)-derivatized phosphine oxide (PO-PEG) ligands. Toxic response was not observed with Fe concentration up to 100 μg/mL in MTT cell proliferation assay of POPEG-capped 3 nm-sized iron oxide nanoparticles. The 3 nm-sized nanoparticles exhibited a high <I>r</I><SUB>1</SUB> relaxivity of 4.78 mM<SUP>–1</SUP> s<SUP>–1</SUP> and low <I>r</I><SUB>2</SUB>/<I>r</I><SUB>1</SUB> ratio of 6.12, demonstrating that ESIONs can be efficient <I>T</I><SUB>1</SUB> contrast agents. The high <I>r</I><SUB>1</SUB> relaxivities of ESIONs can be attributed to the large number of surface Fe<SUP>3+</SUP> ions with 5 unpaired valence electrons. In the in vivo<I> T</I><SUB>1</SUB>-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ESIONs showed longer circulation time than the clinically used gadolinium complex-based contrast agent, enabling high-resolution imaging. High-resolution blood pool MR imaging using ESIONs enabled clear observation of various blood vessels with sizes down to 0.2 mm. Objective; The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of environmental disinfection and the detection of coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in the environmental specimens in the COVID-19 inpatient rooms. Method; The 192 environmental specimens were collected from the isolation rooms of four COVID-19 patients. (12 environmental specimens were collected per patient, four times each). Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) detection was performed using real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Result; Of a total 192 environmental specimens, 5 were positive, 2 were undetermined, and the remaining 185 were negative. Among the environmental specimens before environmental disinfection, 2 cases of the patient’s cell phone and 2 cases on the floor of the ward were positive, and 1 case of a light switch was undetermined. There was no positive result in the environmental specimens after the patients were discharged from hospital and the patient rooms were disinfected. Conclusion; It suggests that there will be no environmental contamination if environmental disinfection is carried out appropriately according to the environmental disinfection guidelines recommended by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA). It can be seen that periodic environmental disinfection is important for providing a safe environment to patients and healthcareworkers from infection.
