        A S trategic Human Resource Management Approach in Chaebol Hotels

        Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine how strategic human resource management practices are enacted in chaebol hotels, and also to evaluate the relationship between the SHRM practices and organizational effectiveness as experienced by employees, regarding the concept of organizational justice. Design/methodology/approach: The questionnaire survey for employees served to test hypotheses which examine the relationship between SHRM and the influence of these HR practices on organizational effectiveness, using multi-regression analysis. This research encompasses a total of 450 responses collected from individuals employed at chaebol hotels in Seoul and Busan. Findings: This study revealed that chaebol hotels hired competent employees who had language capabilities, used appearance as a selection criterion, and ensured that sophisticated selection methods were well established through the HR systems of numerous subsidiary companies. Employees consider the perceived injustices in the recruitment and selection process and the perceived unfairness in promotions. Research limitations/implications: All findings support the concept that the best practice, driven by collectivism, employment legislation, trade unions, and financial considerations, plays a significant role in managing HRM in chaebol hotels. This study contributes a new SHRM framework by integrating a combination of best fit, based on quality enhancement strategy, and best practices tailored to the specific organization. Originality/value: This study contributed to explore the SHRM framework for the Chaebol hotel sector with regard to providing both high quality of service and also a high price policy. This study provides guidelines for efficient SHRM to managers and practitioners who operate deluxe hotels and offers an essential material to gain a better understanding of a new SHRM framework in service organization.

      • Precise Control of Quantum Dot Location within the P3HT-<i>b</i>-P2VP/QD Nanowires Formed by Crystallization-Driven 1D Growth of Hybrid Dimeric Seeds

        <P>Herein, we report a simple fabrication of hybrid nanowires (NWs) composed of a p-type conjugated polymer (CP) and n-type inorganic quantum dots (QDs) by exploiting the crystallization-driven solution assembly of poly(3-hexylthiophene)-<I>b</I>-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P3HT-<I>b</I>-P2VP) rod–coil amphiphiles. The visualization of the crystallization-driven growth evolution of hybrid NWs through systematic transmission electron microscopy experiments showed that discrete dimeric CdSe QDs bridged by P3HT-<I>b</I>-P2VP polymers were generated during the initial state of crystallization. These, in turn, assemble into elongated fibrils, forming the coaxial P3HT-<I>b</I>-P2VP/QDs hybrid NWs. In particular, the location of the QD arrays within the single strand of P3HT-<I>b</I>-P2VP can be controlled precisely by manipulating the regioregularity (RR) values of P3HT block and the relative lengths of P2VP block. The degree of coaxiality of the QD arrays was shown to depend on the coplanarity of the thiophene rings of P3HT block, which can be controlled by the RR value of P3HT block. In addition, the location of QDs could be regulated at the specific-local site of P3HT-<I>b</I>-P2VP NW according to the surface characteristics of QDs.         <P>Here we demonstrate fully-integrated, bezel-less transistor arrays using stretchable origami substrates and foldable conducting interconnects. Reversible folding of these arrays is enabled by origami substrates which are composed of rigid support fixtures and foldable elastic joints. In addition, hybrid structures of thin metal films and metallic nanowires worked as foldable interconnects which are located on the elastomeric joints.</P>

      • Prognostic index reflecting genetic alteration related to disease-free time for gastric cancer patient.

        <P>The study purpose was to develop a patient's prognostic index (PI) reflecting the genetic information in cDNA microarray-based CGH experiment data for estimating a gastric cancer patient's survival time. The developed methodology was fit to and validated using data from the Cancer Metastasis Research Center at Yonsei University; 30 pairs of gastric tumors and normal gastric tissues were used in the cDNA microarray-based CGH. The cDNA microarrays containing 17,000 sequence-verified human gene probes were directly compared. Genetic alteration score (GAS) was constructed based on the genes that had a high frequency of alteration among all the genes displaying small variations across the arrays. GAS was determined using a technique that finds linear combinations of the original variables that best account for the variability in the data. When classifying cancer patients with the PI predicted by the model incorporating GAS, the correct classification rate for recurrence was 83.33%. In conclusion, GAS allowed for providing an independent patient's PI that reflects the genetic information for prognosis on hazard rate of recurrence, which was capable of distinguishing a patient's recurrence status, survival status and cancer stage status. The predicted PI also provided each patient's estimated disease-free survival rate. In this study, 82 genes were selected for analysis based on a high frequency of alteration and small variations across the arrays. In addition, 13 genes displaying a possible relationship with disease-free survival time were identified. GAS was found to be associated with the recurrence status and survival status.</P>

        Association Rules of Comorbidities in Dementia by Using Korea National Hospital Discharge In-depth Injury Survey Data

        This study aims to find out the associative relationship between dementia and comorbidities. To conduct this study, we used KNHDIS(Korea National Hospital Discharge In-depth Injury Survey) data from 2009 to 2018 provided by the KDCA(Korean Disease Control and Prevention Agency) annually. We used MySQL for data preprocessing and R for data analysis. As a result of applying the Apriori algorithm criteria of support(≥0.01), confidence(≥ 0.6), and lift(>1), seventeen rules related to dementia were discovered. The diseases associated with dementia were diabetes mellitus, hypertension, disorders of lipoprotein metabolism, glomerular disorders in diabetes mellitus, renal diseases, cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, and other urinary system disorders. This study can be utilized as primary data for the care of patients with dementia and provides implications for improving effective dementia prevention policies.

        An Analytical Study on Research Trends in Auriculotherapy in Korea

        Purpose: This study was done to analyze research articles and explore research trends in auriculotherapy between 2010 and 2019 in Korean academic journals. Methods: Domestic databases including KMbase, RISS, KISS, and NDSL were searched for studies published between 2010 and 2019. Research trends were analyzed according to The STandards Reporting Interventions in Clinical Trials of Acupuncture (STRICTA) guidelines including research design, control group type, and intervention details from a total of 78 domestic papers. Descriptive statistics were analyzed by frequency and percentage. Results: Most studies were conducted in nursing. Regarding research design, a quasi-experimental design with a no-treatment control group was most common. There were 12 conditions with 4 participant categories. The most common intervention was four-point acupuncture-buried therapy. Interventions conducted weekly with cessation of 2 days for 6 weeks were popular. Regarding dropouts, few studies reported side-effects, with personal reasons being the most frequently reported. However, 50% of the studies failed to provide adequate information regarding intervention details according to the STRICTA guidelines, such as the practitioner background, ear point used for intervention, and a flow diagram. Conclusion: Interventional studies on auriculotherapy have been steadily increasing and have included more diversified conditions. Future studies should investigate the effects of auriculotherapy with more rigorous design, and report more detailed information regarding interventions.

      • High serum isoflavone concentrations are associated with the risk of precocious puberty in Korean girls

        <P><B>Summary</B></P><P><B>Objective </B> The gradual decrease in the age of onset of puberty raises concerns about the contribution of phytoestrogen intake on sexual maturation. However, no data are available on the association between serum isoflavone (genistein, daidzein) concentration and central precocious puberty (CPP). The aim of the study was to test the association between serum isoflavone concentrations and the risk of CPP in Korean girls.</P><P><B>Study design </B> A case‐control study was conducted at Inje University Hospital in Korea. One‐hundred and eight girls with CPP (aged 8·6 ± 0·8 year) and 91 age‐matched controls (aged 8·5 ± 0·8 year) were examined.</P><P><B>Results </B> Serum concentrations of daidzein (<I>P </I>=<I> </I>0·0202), genistein (<I>P </I>=<I> </I>0·0021) and total isoflavones (<I>P </I>=<I> </I>0·0009) were higher in children with CPP than in normal children. When the children were categorized into three groups according to total serum isoflavone as follows: <30, 30–70 and ≥70 nmol/l, serum concentrations of daidzein, genistein and total isoflavones significantly increased across three categories of serum isoflavone (<I>P </I><<I> </I>0·0001). The prevalence of CPP was significantly higher in children with serum isoflavone level of ≥30 nmol/l than those with serum level of <30 nmol/l (<I>P </I>=<I> </I>0·0008). The adjusted OR for precocious puberty increased significantly across a range of total serum isoflavone (OR = 4·39; 95% CI: 1·83–10·51 <I>vs</I> OR = 5·22; 95% CI: 2·07–13·20; <I>P </I>=<I> </I>0·001).</P><P><B>Conclusion </B> These results suggest that elevated serum isoflavones may be associated with the risk of CPP in Korean girls.</P>

        Stromal vascular fraction injection to treat intractable radiation-induced rectovaginal fistula

        Rectovaginal fistula, which can arise after an injury to the vaginal canal or rectum, is a troublesome obstacle for patients' everyday life. In most cases, it can be covered with a local flap, but previous radiation therapy increases the recurrence rate, making it especially difficult to cure. As the application of stromal vascular fraction (SVF) obtained from enzymatically digested autologous adipose tissue has become increasingly common, several reports have advocated its effectiveness for the treatment of refractory wounds. In light of the angiogenic, regenerative characteristics of SVF, it was incorporated as a treatment option in two cases of rectovaginal fistula discussed here. As described in this report, irradiated rectovaginal fistulas in rectal cancer patients were successfully treated with SVF injection, and we suggest SVF as a feasible treatment option for cases of rectovaginal fistula that would otherwise be very difficult to cure.

        Abrogation of the Circadian Nuclear Receptor REV-ERBα Exacerbates 6-Hydroxydopamine-Induced Dopaminergic Neurodegeneration

        Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive degeneration of dopaminergic (DAergic) neurons, particularly in the substantia nigra (SN). Although circadian dysfunction has been suggested as one of the pathophysiological risk factors for PD, the exact molecular link between the circadian clock and PD remains largely unclear. We have recently demonstrated that $REV-ERB{\alpha}$, a circadian nuclear receptor, serves as a key molecular link between the circadian and DAergic systems. It competitively cooperates with NURR1, another nuclear receptor required for the optimal development and function of DA neurons, to control DAergic gene transcription. Considering our previous findings, we hypothesize that $REV-ERB{\alpha}$ may have a role in the onset and/or progression of PD. In the present study, we therefore aimed to elucidate whether genetic abrogation of $REV-ERB{\alpha}$ affects PD-related phenotypes in a mouse model of PD produced by a unilateral injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) into the dorsal striatum. $REV-ERB{\alpha}$ deficiency significantly exacerbated 6-OHDA-induced motor deficits as well as DAergic neuronal loss in the vertebral midbrain including the SN and the ventral tegmental area. The exacerbated DAergic degeneration likely involves neuroinflammation-mediated neurotoxicity. The $REV-erb{\alpha}$ knockout mice showed prolonged microglial activation in the SN along with the over-production of interleukin $1{\beta}$, a pro-inflammatory cytokine, in response to 6-OHDA. In conclusion, the present study demonstrates for the first time that genetic abrogation of $REV-ERB{\alpha}$ can increase vulnerability of DAergic neurons to neurotoxic insults, such as 6-OHDA, thereby implying that its normal function may be beneficial for maintaining DAergic neuron populations during PD progression.
