<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The toxicity of nano-graphene oxide (NGO) on development and angiogenesis was evaluated using zebrafish embryos as <I>in vivo</I> model system. Microinjection of NGO resulted in gross morphological defects in a dose-dependent manner partly due to the induction of apoptosis, whereas coating NGO derivatives with polyethylene glycol (PEG), a biocompatible polymer significantly attenuated its toxicity. NGO also caused abnormal branching and mispatterning of developing trunk blood vessels monitored by endothelial cell-specific fluorescent transgenic zebrafish, presumably via Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor and Notch pathways, key signaling pathways for normal angiogenic process. Interestingly, Alexa568 conjugated, PEG-coated NGO (NGO-A568) still caused angiogenic defects to the similar degree as NGO did, suggesting differential toxic effects of nanomaterials on different developmental processes. Confocal microscopy imaging of NGO- and NGO-A568-injected embryos visualized its live distribution throughout the body including the cranial vasculature. The broader utilization of embryonic zebrafish combined with <I>in vivo</I>, real-time, high-resolution imaging is warranted for assessing the properties of nanomaterials.</P>

This study to figure out the diversity patterns and community structures of ground beetle of the Gyebang Mountain newly is incorporated into Odaesan National Park, Korea. A total of 47 species belonging to 20 genera of 12 subfamilies were identified from 483 collected ground beetles. Species richness was high in Pterostichinae (18 species, 39%), Carabinae (8 species, 18%), Harpalinae (7 species, 15%), Lebiinae (3 species, 7%), Bembidiinae and Nebriinae (2 species, 5%) and others (1 species, 2%). Twenty-three species were brachypterous and 24 species were macropterous. The dominant species was Synuchus nitidus (19.05%) and a subdominant species was Eucarabus cartereti cartereti (14.49%). Dominance, species diversity, species richness, and species evenness index were 0.56, 3.00, 3.85 and 0.70, respectively. Also, Acoptolabrus mirabilissimus ssp. 1 is discovered in the Mt. Gyebang area for the first time.

We investigated the dependence of the retardation dispersion on the polarization direction of ultraviolet (UV) light during the photopolymerization of self-organized smectic reactive mesogen (RM) molecules. RM retarder film that was photopolymerized with UV light linearly polarized parallel to the layer plane showed negative dispersion (ND) of retardation for a wide range of UV polymerization temperatures. On the other hand, film that was photopolymerized with unpolarized UV light showed negative dispersion in a narrow range of UV polymerization temperatures. With a certain UV polymerization temperature, the dispersion of retardation was converted from positive to negative, depending on the UV polarization.

<P><B>Highly water‐soluble and color‐tunable photoluminescent fullerene nanoparticles</B> are synthesized by using tetraethylene glycol (TEG) and lithium hydroxide as a catalyst. The maximum PL emission changes depend on the contents of the remaining π‐conjugation in oxidized C<SUB>60</SUB>, which is partially covalently conjugated with TEG. The PL behavior is attributed to an electronic transition change due to the distortion of symmetrical C<SUB>60</SUB>.</P>

<P>We proposed a method of eliminating the bending-induced retardation of a plastic film by coating it with a polymer layer with an opposite birefringence. We coated a polystyrene (PS) or a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) layer on a polycarbonate (PC) plastic film. The bare PC film is composed of main-chain-type polymers and showed an increase in retardation with bending. The main-chains of the PC polymer are reoriented along the circular arc direction during bending, resulting in a positive birefringence. In contrast, the 11 wt. % PS-coated and the 19 wt. % PMMA-coated PC films showed minimal change in the retardation regardless of the radius of curvature. The PS and the PMMA polymers are of the side-chain-type, and the side-chains were aligned perpendicular to the circular arc direction during bending, resulting in a negative birefringence. Consequently, the bending-induced retardation of the PC film can be compensated by the PS or the PMMA layer during bending of the film. This method of compensating for the bending-induced retardation of the plastic film can be useful for flexible display applications. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America</P>
