Dietary patterns are associated with physical growth among school girls aged 9-11 years

Noh, Hwa-Young,Song, Yoon-Ju,Lee, Jung-Eun,Joung, Hyo-Jee,Park, Min-Kyung,Li, Shan Ji,Paik, Hee-Young The Korean Nutrition Society 2011 Nutrition Research and Practice Vol. No.

The purpose of this study was to identify dietary patterns among Korean elementary school girls based on the change in body mass index (BMI), body fat, bone mineral density (BMD), and bone mineral content (BMC) during 22 months and to explore the characteristics of dietary patterns identified. Girls aged 9-11 years were recruited and 3-day dietary data were collected four times. Subjects with a diet record of 8 or more days and anthropometric data measured at baseline and 22 months later were included (n = 198). Reduced rank regression was utilized to derive dietary patterns using a change in BMI, body fat, and calcaneus BMD and BMC as response variables. Two dietary patterns were identified: the "Egg and Rice" dietary pattern and "Fruit, Nuts, Milk Beverage, Egg, Grain" (FNMBEG) dietary pattern. Subjects who had high score on the FNMBEG pattern consumed various food groups, including fruits, nuts and seeds, and dairy products, whereas subjects in the "Egg and Rice' dietary pattern group did not. Both dietary patterns showed a positive association with change in BMI and body fat. However, subjects who had a higher score on the "Egg and Rice" dietary pattern had less of a BMC increase, whereas subjects who had a higher score on the FMBEG dietary pattern had more increased BMC over 22 months after adjusting for age, body and bone mass, and Tanner stage at baseline. Our results provide evidence that a well-balanced diet contributes to lean body mass growth among young girls.

      • Biogenic silver nanoparticles with chlorogenic acid as a bioreducing agent.

Noh, Hwa Jung,Kim, Hyun-Seok,Jun, Sang Hui,Kang, Young-Hwa,Cho, Seonho,Park, Youmie American Scientific Publishers 2013 Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Vol.13 No.8

We report the synthesis of biogenic silver nanoparticles using chlorogenic acid as a bioreducing agent. Chlorogenic acid is a polyphenol compound abundant in coffee. UV-Vis spectra showed the characteristic surface plasmon resonance band at 415 nm, indicating the successful synthesis of biogenic silver nanoparticles. Spherical and irregular shaped nanoparticles were observed with an average diameter of 19.29 +/- 8.23 nm. The reaction yield from silver ion to silver nanoparticles was observed as 95.43% by using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Fourier transform infrared spectra revealed that the -C = O groups of chlorogenic acid may coordinate or complex into silver nanoparticles. Biogenic silver nanoparticles exerted higher antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria than against Gram-positive bacteria. Interestingly, a comparable antibacterial activity to a standard antibiotic was observed against two strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.66 microg/mL). The synergistic effect of a combination of silver nanoparticles and chlorogenic acid on antibacterial activity is obvious, leading to approximately 8-fold enhancement in the case of Pseudomonas aeruginosa when compared with chlorogenic acid alone. The present report suggests that a pure compound with a plant origin is capable of being a bioreducing agent for the synthesis of biogenic silver nanoparticles with superior antibacterial activity, opening up many applications in nanomedicine and nanobiotechnology.

      • Melamine nanosensing with chondroitin sulfate-reduced gold nanoparticles.

Noh, Hwa Jung,Kim, Hyun-Seok,Cho, Seonho,Park, Youmie American Scientific Publishers 2013 Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Vol.13 No.12

Gold nanoparticles were green-synthesized using a glycosaminoglycan, chondroitin sulfate, as the reducing agent by mixing Au3+ and chondroitin sulfate under heating. Chondroitin sulfate-reduced gold nanoparticles were characterized by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, high resolution transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The yield of Au3+ to Au0 was measured as 80.1% by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy. A mostly spherical shape, with an average diameter of 44.68 +/- 11.25 nm, was observed from the atomic force microscopy images. Using chondroitin sulfate-reduced gold nanoparticles, we developed a melamine nanosensor that provides a simplified method to detect melamine in infant formula. With an increase in the melamine concentration in the gold nanoparticle solution, the characteristic surface plasmon resonance band of gold nanoparticles at 530 nm decreased, whereas a new peak appeared at 620 nm. There was a linear relationship between the absorbance ratio (A620/A530) and the melamine concentration in the range of 0.1-10 microM. The practical use of the proposed method was verified by quantifying melamine spiked in real infant formula at concentrations as low as 12.6 ppb. The nanosensing of melamine using chondroitin sulfate-reduced gold nanoparticles can be a promising technique for quick on-site melamine screening of milk products.

      • Antibacterial activity and increased freeze-drying stability of sialyllactose-reduced silver nanoparticles using sucrose and trehalose.

        Noh, Hwa Jung,Im, A-Rang,Kim, Hyun-Seok,Sohng, Jae Kyung,Kim, Chong-Kook,Kim, Yeong Shik,Cho, Seonho,Park, Youmie American Scientific Publishers 2012 Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Vol.12 No.5

The resistance to current antibiotics results in the emergence of health-threatening bacteria. Silver nanoparticles are known to exhibit broad-spectrum antibacterial activities without the development of resistance. Herein, we developed a green synthetic method for the preparation of silver nanoparticles with sialyllactose instead of toxic chemicals as a reducing agent, which would improve its therapeutic applicability and increase its biocompatibility. Oven incubation, autoclaving and microwave irradiation methods were applied to prepare the silver nanoparticles. High resolution-transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy images revealed mostly spherical and amorphous silver nanoparticles with an average diameter of 23.64 nm. Fourier Transform-infrared spectra suggest that the N-H amide of sialyllactose might be involved in the binding of silver nanoparticles. Based on thermogravimetric analyses, 2,3-sialyllactose-reduced silver nanoparticles are composed of 54.3 wt% organic components and 45.7 wt% metallic silver. Enhanced antibacterial activities of silver nanoparticles (approximately 8-fold) were observed against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium (minimum inhibitory concentration 16 microg/mL). Next, we employed the use of carbohydrate stabilizers to increase the stability of silver nanoparticles during a freeze-drying process. It was found that sucrose and trehalose were the most effective stabilizers. In addition, silver nanoparticles possessed excellent salt stability as well as on-the-shelf stability in the presence of these stabilizers. Derivatives of sialic acid are known to be anti-influenza agents; therefore, the newly prepared silver nanoparticles may serve as useful antibacterial and antiviral agents to cope with both pathogenic bacteria and viruses in the near future.

한국과 독일 그리고 일본의 폐업 자영업자 정책 비교 분석

        노화봉 ( Hwa-bong Noh ),정남기 ( Namki Chung ) 한국질서경제학회 2016 질서경제저널 Vol.19 No.1

It is recently expected to increase bankrupt small business due to the ongoing economic downturn. therefore, it is required appropriate policies for the bankrupt small business because of social security. In this study, we examine the policies for the bankrupt small business in countries with similar political demands with Korea, such as Germany and Japan. And then we draw some effective policies for korean bankrupt small business. In foreign case, there is no special policy for only bankrupt small business. The countries support bankrupt small business through their basic social security system and general supporting system for the unemployed. In Germany, bankrupt small business can take unemployment benefits, vocational training, employment service and so on as general paid worker, if they have unemployment insurance. Self-employed, they have low-income, also can take support for living in social welfare dimension. And there is no institution that supports specially targeting the self-employed out of business. The most self-employed in Germany are subscribed to unemployment insurance. This means that the self-employed in Germany to maintain a certain level of life when they go out of business. In the case of Japan, there is only one special policy for only bankrupt small business. And that is business closure consulting. The Japanese Government affords tax support for a mutual aid association as Yellow Umbrella Mutual Aid System in Korea. The implication of Germany and Japan is that self-employed will be incorporated into the social security system, and have the spirit of self-help. More important than anything for the self-employed should be encouraged to join in the unemployment insurance system because self-employed need fixed income for maintaining the basic standard of living during closure of business.

『와일드팰 홀의 거주인』에 나타난 빅토리아 시대 여성의 독립성과 정체성 연구

        노춘화(Noh, Chun-Hwa) 신영어영문학회 2016 신영어영문학 Vol.64 No.-

This study examines how gender ideology in the Victorian Age is represented by Ann Bronte through different aspects of feminine consciousness in her novel, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall covers the portrait of a woman’s liberative endeavor against male-centered gender ideology and a harsh life. Anne Bronte has a characteristic of expressing realism and pursuit of truth based on it. Within it, as a woman and as an individual woman, she creates an externally tender, but internally powerful woman. The female protagonist Helen is a woman who gets hurt from the Victorian age’s male-centered gender ideology, but tries to be reborn as a determined, brave woman. Helen did her best to stand on her own feet as an independent woman who fought firmly against Huntingdon. In this perspective, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall can be considered as the first solid feministic novel.

Instruction Using Scaffolding for Language Learner Students in Solving Mathematical Word Problems

( Ji Hwa Noh ),( Warren Jennifer ),( Huh Nan ),( Ko Ho Kyong ) 한국수학교육학회 2013 수학교육연구 Vol.17 No.3

Communicating about mathematics is an essential component in learning mathematics and is a key standard for successful learning in a mathematics classroom using stories and storytelling as a catalyst to mathematics instruction. This, however, can make learn-ing math for students with language deficiencies since they are working toward master-ing both basic language proficiency as well as the specialized language needed for math-ematics. This is a particular concern because the number of students of multicultural families is rapidly increasing. In this paper, we discuss the challenges and complexities of language-deficient students learning math in a classroom where communication is a key standard for successful learning, and suggest implications for teaching, by presenting an USA elementary teacher`s scaffolding to make reading and solving word problems less intimidating for her language learner students as well as native speaking students.

『아그네스 그레이』에 나타난 빅토리아 시대의 주체적 여성의식

        노춘화(Noh, Chun-Hwa) 신영어영문학회 2013 신영어영문학 Vol.56 No.-

This study examines how gender ideology in the Victorian Age is represented in Ann Bronte’s Agnes Grey against the backdrop of their social, cultural milieu, scrutinizing the different aspects of feminine consciousness in her novels. In so doing, this study finds that, although the feminine consciousness is disclosed through various themes, each novelist reveals the slightly different degree of feminine consciousness while bearing upon individual uniqueness. Agnes Grey, the protagonist of Agnes Grey, constantly strives to establish the lost right of woman in an increasingly male-centered ideology of her time, and she accomplishes this by embracing the reality of her times while also resisting the distorted gender ideology that surrounds her. Agnes Grey in particular portrays the author’s strive for the independent women. Within Agnes Grey, the absurd relationship between men and women is complementary to one another and the achievement of harmonious gender equality through the positive meaning of life is the solution that it ultimately portrays. These fictional women are oppressed through life and marriage, and patriarchal system of oppression and social prejudice. This novel is the first literary achievement in that it further developed the traditional awareness of the existence and importance of woman within society.
