Therapeutic Effect of Dioctahedral Smectite on Diarrhea Caused by E. coli and Salmonella in Calves

The objectives of the current study were to evaluate the therapeutic effect of dioctahedral smectite (smectite) against calf diarrhea caused by pathogenic E. coli and/or Salmonella typhimurium. In this study, 20 calves (aged 2~3 months) with diarrhea were used for evaluation of the efficacy of smectite on calf diarrhea with 20% smectite suspension in PBS. Calves received 10 ml smectite suspension three times per day after feeding, and fecal samples were collected at the gate of treatment and on the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth day after administration. On the fifth day after treatment with smectite suspension, the diarrhea index showed a significant decrease in the treated group, compared to the control group (P<0.001). The number of pathogenic E. coli in feces of the treated group was significantly decreased, compared to each control group from the second day after treatment (P<0.001), and that of Salmonella typhimurium was significantly decreased from the first day after treatment (P<0.05). According to the results of the current study, 20% smectite suspension had a therapeutic effect on diarrhea caused by E. coli and/or Salmonella in calves.
An Observation of Micro-crack in Transformation-induced Plasticity-assisted Multiphase Steel

<P>In a transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP)-assisted multiphase steel, the phases around a micro-crack at the initial stage of cracking during wire drawing were observed by a focused ion beam (FIB), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). A novel FIB method, which is termed as “In-plane lift-out” technique, was applied to obtain an overall plan-view of the TEM specimen containing the micro-crack. The equilibrium concentration ratio of Mn in austenite and ferrite was calculated for the alloy and compared with the EDS line profile of Mn concentration across the micro-crack in the TEM specimen. The interface between the ferrite and martensite was identified as the crack initiation site during drawing of this multi-phase steel.</P>

<P>Lipid raft-associated clathrin is essential for host-pathogen interactions during infection. <I>Brucella abortus</I> is an intracellular pathogen that circumvents host defenses, but little is known about the precise infection mechanisms that involve interaction with lipid raft-associated mediators. The aim of this study was to elucidate the clathrin-mediated phagocytic mechanisms of <I>B. abortus</I>. The clathrin dependence of <I>B. abortus</I> infection in HeLa cells was investigated using an infection assay and immunofluorescence microscopy. The redistribution of clathrin in the membrane and in phagosomes was investigated using sucrose gradient fractionation of lipid rafts and the isolation of <I>B. abortus</I>-containing vacuoles, respectively. Clathrin and dynamin were concentrated into lipid rafts during <I>B. abortus</I> infection, and the entry and intracellular survival of <I>B. abortus</I> within HeLa cells were abrogated by clathrin inhibition. Clathrin disruption decreased actin polymerization and the colocalization of <I>B. abortus</I>-containing vacuoles with clathrin and Rab5 but not lysosome-associated membrane protein 1 (LAMP-1). Thus, our data demonstrate that clathrin plays a fundamental role in the entry and intracellular survival of <I>B. abortus</I> via interaction with lipid rafts and actin rearrangement. This process facilitates the early intracellular trafficking of <I>B. abortus</I> to safe replicative vacuoles.</P>
Evaluation for the Safety of Bee Venom in ICR Mice

This study was conducted in order to examine the safety of bee venom as an alternative for antibiotics using male ICR mice. Five-week-old male mice received a single intravenous injection of a dried honey bee venom at the concentration of 0.25 mg/kg (a clinical dose) or 0.5 mg/kg through the tail vein and various pathophysiological analyses were performed after three days. No significant differences in changes of body weight were observed between the saline-treated control group and the experimental groups. In the hematological analysis, none of the parameters were affected by bee venom. In blood biochemistry analysis, none of the markers were affected by administration of bee venom. Similarly, there were no significant effects on markers for liver, kidney, and skeletal muscle functions in all treated- groups. On macroscopic examination, no remarkable lesions were detected in these organs. Because there were no adverse effects of the bee venom in a single intravenous toxicity test for three days, it was concluded that bee venom could be a candidate for a safe natural antibiotic for use in the animal production industry.

We have studied the clinical significance of tumor marker CA 19-9 in various gastrointestinal malignancies compared with normal control, benign diseases, and other malignancies. The results were as followings; 1) There was no age and sex difference in CA 19-9 serum level in control and various gastrointestinal malignancies. 2) There was somewhat increase in CA 19-9 serum level in various gastrointestinal malignancies but not statistically significant. In metastatic cancer, the serum levels of CA 19-9 were increased significantly. 3) The specificity of CA 19-9 in various benign diseases was 86.1% 4) The sensitivity of CA 19-9 in various gastrointestinal malignancies including local and metasis was 42.5%, but in case of metastasis, the sensitivity increased to 78%. 5) When CEA and Calg-9 were checked simu1taneously in diagnosis of metastatic stomach ca., the sensitivity was 88.2%. 6) All cases of pancreatic cancer and cholangiocarcinoma studied, showed marked increase of serum level of CA 19-9.
