      • Integrated Management Systems - Theoretical and Practical Implications

Eriksson, Henrik,Hansson, Jonas The Korean Society for Quality Management 2006 The Asian Journal on Quality Vol.7 No.2

Organisations worldwide strive to develop their management systems for business functions, ranging from quality and environment to safety, information security and social responsibility. During the latest decade a considerable amount of these efforts has been concentrated on introducing and applying standards such as the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. The need for Integrated Management Systems (IMS) often arises as a result of decisions to implement Environmental Management System (EMS) and/or an occupational health and safety management system in addition to a Quality Management System (QMS). At the end of 2003, approximately 3200 organisations in Sweden had an ISO 9001 certificate, and approximately 3400 organisations had a certificate based on an EMS. Dealing with separate management systems and ensuring that they align with the organisation's strategies and goals, has proved difficult. Owing to the large number of organisations certified according to multiple types of systems, an increasing number of organisations are establishing IMS. There are examples of companies, which chose to integrate EMS and QMS into a co-ordinated implementation approach, and although sparse, the research within this area indicates potential benefits of using an integrated approach. This paper presents both a theoretical and an empirical investigation with the aim to elucidate problems related to the integration of management systems. Furthermore, the paper will present recommendations for succeeding in such integrations and, hence, contributing to an increased understanding on how IMSs should be designed and implemented.

Lived Experience of Thai Women with Alcohol Addiction

        Kulnaree Hanpatchaiyakul,Henrik Eriksson,Jureerat Kijsomporn,Gunnel Ostlund 한국간호과학회 2017 Asian Nursing Research Vol.11 No.4

Purpose: This study explored the lived experiences of Thai women in relation to alcohol addiction in treatment. Methods: Twelve women aged 20 to 65 years, were participated. The participants were recruited from two special hospitals and one outpatient clinic in a general hospital. Descriptive phenomenology was applied to analyze the transcripts of the individual interviews. Result: The explored phenomenon of Thai women experiencing alcohol addiction included four essential aspects, (1) feeling inferior and worthless (2) feeling physically and emotionally hurt, (3) fearing physical deterioration and premature death, and (4) feeling superior and powerful. Through these different aspects of Thai women's lived experiences, the following essence was synthesized. The essence of the lived experience of alcohol addiction among the studied Thai women was ambivalence between feeling inferior and worthless and feeling superior and powerful when acting as a man. Drinking alcohol lessened life's difficulties and fears; for example, of violence, bodily demolition, premature death and marginalization from family and society. Conclusion: Thai women who experience alcohol addiction are treated with gender-related double standards when trying to undo gender traditional roles. Their marginalization from family and society deepens making them even more vulnerable to the positive side effects of alcohol drinking.

      • Homo experiens -exploring the use of factorial experiments in quality-of-life improvement

        ( Marco A. F. R. N. Santos ),( Henrik Eriksson ) 한국품질경영학회 2015 한국품질경영학회 학술대회 Vol.2015 No.2

Background: Experimentation is essential for learning and improvement. Factorial experiments (FEs) are a superior experimental design that has been traditionally and successfully used in industrial settings. Currently, there are trends towards increasing citizen literacy, empowering individuals, increasing technology application and strengthening individual monitoring of behaviors and habits. Purpose: To explore FEs use by individuals in improving daily-life quality characteristics to achieve better quality of life (QoL). Methods: Data were obtained from 34 experiments conducted individually by novice quality management students. The authors interviewed the six students whose experiments were deemed most interesting and elaborate. Interview data were analyzed in a general inductive fashion. Main results: FEs have large applicability to daily-life situations. Their use by individuals is however challenging as FEs can pose various methodological pitfalls, be time-demanding and conflict with momentary mood and personal planning. Principal conclusions: FEs should be reserved for highly relevant problems and supported by technology that enables high-quality data collection. Appropriate support is required to fulfilling the vision of a homo experiens, i.e. a common citizen who can autonomously conduct experiments for achieving better QoL.
