Nuclear Proliferation and Rollback: The Complex Case of Iran

( Farhad Rezaei ) 한국국방연구원 2017 The Korean Journal of Defense Analysis Vol.29 No.4

This study seeks to provide answers to the following questions; what were the real motivations behind Iran’s nuclear program?; to what degree did key players of Iran’s nuclear program at a given time period fit the rational proliferator profile?; and eventually, how did key elites agree on a unified set of parameters of rollback in the nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions? The study has three objectives. The first objective is to ascertain whether Iran fits the profile of a rational proliferator. The second objective is to determine whether its response to sanctions followed the rational modality expectations embedded in proliferation theories. The third objective is to identify the background of the initial decision to pursue the nuclear program with a special emphasis on key motivations and factors that helped to drive it from a very modest beginning to a virtual breakout position.

Associations between body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) with the dental health component of the index of orthodontic treatment need (IOTN-DHC) and other BDD risk factors in orthodontic patients: A preliminary study

        Farhad Sobouti,Foruzan Elyasi,Reza Alizadeh Navaei,Farbod Rayatnia,Nika Rezaei Kalantari,Sepideh Dadgar,Vahid Rakhshan 대한치과교정학회 2023 대한치과교정학회지 Vol.53 No.1

Objective: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder that may be negatively associated with the self-image. It might be associated with orthodontic treatment demand and outcome, and therefore is important. Thus, this study was conducted. Methods: The Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale modified for Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD-YBOCS) questionnaire was used in 699 orthodontic patients above 12 years of age (222 males, 477 females), at seven clinics in two cities (2020–2021). BDD diagnosis and severity were calculated based on the first 3 items and all 12 items of the questionnaire. The dental health component of the index of orthodontic treatment need (IOTN-DHC) was assessed by orthodontists. Multivariable and bivariable statistical analyses were performed on ordinal and dichotomized BDD diagnoses to assess potentially associated factors (IOTN-DHC, age, sex, marital status, education level, and previous orthodontic consultation) (α = 0.05). Results: IOTN-DHC scores 1–5 were seen in 13.0%, 39.9%, 29.8%, 12.4%, and 4.9% of patients. Age/sex/marital status/education were not associated with IOTN-DHC (p > 0.05). Based on 3-item questionnaire, 17.02% of patients had BDD (14.02% mild). Based on 12-item questionnaire, 2.86% had BDD. BDD was more prevalent or severer in females, married patients, patients with a previous history of orthodontic consultation, and patients with milder IOTN-DHCs (p < 0.05). Conclusions: IOTN-DHC was negatively/slightly associated with BDD in orthodontic patients. Being female and married may increase BDD risk.

Multi crack detection in helical gear teeth using transmission error ratio

Mohsen Rezaei,Mehrdad Poursina,Shahram Hadian Jazi,Farhad Haji Aboutalebi 대한기계학회 2019 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.33 No.3

Gear systems are used to transmit power in the industry when accuracy and synchrony are needed and helical gear systems are used in more accurate and high-speed industries. It is important to ensure that these systems work faultlessly, therefore the detection of the crack location and situation is very efficient in the gear systems. In this research, a new approach is proposed to detect the multi crack location and length in the helical gear teeth. To this end, after giving an explanation of helical gear mesh stiffness and demonstrating the helical gear pair dynamic modeling, the transmission error ratio method is used to detect the cracks locations and lengths. Then, according to solved examples, when the cracks locations are far enough that their effects on the transmission error are completely separated, the cracked teeth and the lengths of cracks can be detected exactly, and when the cracks are in adjacent teeth, according to the cracks lengths and depths and their effects overlap, the number of cracks and their lengths can be detected exactly, approximately or absolutely undetectable.

Speech Intelligibility in Persian Hearing Impaired Children with Cochlear Implants and Hearing Aids

        Mohammad Rezaei,Maryam Emadi,Peyman Zamani,Farhad Farahani,Gohar Lotfi 대한청각학회 2017 Journal of Audiology & Otology Vol.21 No.1

The aim of present study is to evaluate and compare speech intelligibility in hearing impaired children with cochlear implants (CI) and hearing aid (HA) users and children with normal hearing (NH). The sample consisted of 45 Persian-speaking children aged 3 to 5-years-old. They were divided into three groups, and each group had 15, children, children with CI and children using hearing aids in Hamadan. Participants was evaluated by the test of speech intelligibility level. Results of ANOVA on speech intelligibility test showed that NH children had significantly better reading performance than hearing impaired children with CI and HA. Post-hoc analysis, using Scheffe test, indicated that the mean score of speech intelligibility of normal children was higher than the HA and CI groups; but the difference was not significant between mean of speech intelligibility in children with hearing loss that use cochlear implant and those using HA. It is clear that even with remarkabkle advances in HA technology, many hearing impaired children continue to find speech production a challenging problem. Given that speech intelligibility is a key element in proper communication and social interaction, consequently, educational and rehabilitation programs are essential to improve speech intelligibility of children with hearing loss.

Calculation of time dependent mesh stiffness of helical planetary gear system using analytical approach

Mohsen Rezaei,Mehrdad Poursina,Shahram Hadian Jazi,Farhad Haji Aboutalebi 대한기계학회 2018 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.32 No.8

Time-dependent mesh stiffness is a most important reason of vibration and dynamic excitation in gear sets. In this research, analytical formulas of the helical gear set and the planetary gear system are combined to calculate the time-dependent mesh stiffness of the helical planetary gear system. For this purpose, at the first step, the analytical equations are derived for the spur gear pair. Then by dividing a helical tooth into the several independent thin spur tooth slices, the helical gear pair mesh stiffness is extracted. Finally, these equations are extended to the helical planetary gear system. The suggested analytical results and those which obtained by the finite element method (FEM) are compared and are in good agreement when the helix angle is less than 15 degrees. Also, the helical planetary gear system mesh stiffness in different cases such as fixed carrier, fixed sun gear and fixed ring gears is calculated. These results show that the value of mesh frequency ratio in each case scales the mesh stiffness shapes in the rotation angle direction. In other words, mesh frequency ratio parameter determines the number of meshing period in each rotation of planets.

The Effect of Lactobacillus acidophilus PTCC 1643 on Cultured Intestinal Epithelial Cells Infected with Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis

        Mona Moshiri,Mohammad Mehdi Soltan Dallal,Farhad Rezaei,Masoumeh Douraghi,Laleh Sharifi,Zahra Noroozbabaei,Mehrdad Gholami,Abbas Mirshafiey 질병관리본부 2017 Osong Public Health and Research Persptectives Vol.8 No.1

Objectives: Gastrointestinal disorders caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (SesE) are a significant health problem around the globe. Probiotic bacteria have been shown to have positive effects on the immune responses. Lactobacillus acidophilus was examined for its capability to influence the innate immune response of HT29 intestinal epithelial cells towards SesE. The purpose of this work was to assess the effect of L. acidophilus PTCC 1643 on cultured intestinal epithelial cells infected with SesE. Methods: HT29 cells were cultured in Roswell Park Memorial Institute medium supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum and 1% penicillin/streptomycin. The cells were treated with L. acidophilus PTCC 1643 after or before challenge with SesE. At 2 and 4 hours post-infection, we measured changes in the expression levels of TLR2 and TLR4 via real-time polymerase chain reaction. Results: Treatment with L. acidophilus inhibited SesE-induced increases in TLR2 and TLR4 expression in the infected HT29 cells. Moreover, the expression of TLR2 and TLR4 in cells that were pretreated with L. acidophilus and then infected with SesE was significantly higher than that in cells infected with SesE without pretreatment. Taken together, the results indicated that L. acidophilus had an anti-inflammatory effect and modulated the innate immune response to SesE by influencing TLR2 and TLR4 expression. Conclusion: Our findings suggested that L. acidophilus PTCC 1643 was able to suppress inflammation caused by SesE infection in HT29 cells and reduce TLR2 and TLR4 expression. Additional in vivo and in vitro studies are required to further elucidate the mechanisms underlying this anti-inflammatory effect.

Spoken and Written Narrative in Persian-Speaking Students Who Received Cochlear Implant and/or Hearing Aid

        Peyman Zamani,Zahra Soleymani,Vahid Rashedi,Farhad Farahani,Gohar Lotfi,Mohammad Rezaei 대한이비인후과학회 2018 Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology Vol.11 No.4

Objectives. To compare narrative skills between fourth and fifth grades of Persian-speaking students with hearing impairments and typical hearing students of the same grade and also to evaluate the effects of group, sex, hearing age, and educational grade of the students on their spoken/written narrative performance. Methods. The subjects were 174 students aged 10–13 years, 54 of whom wore cochlear implants, 60 suffered from moderate to severe hearing losses and wore hearing aids, with the remaining 60 students being typical hearing in terms of the sense of hearing. The micro- and macrostructure components of spoken and written narrative were elicited from a pictorial story (The Playful Little Elephant) and then scored by raters. Results. Compared to the typical hearing, the students with hearing impairments had significantly lower scores in all of the microstructure components of narratives. However, the findings showed no significant difference among different groups in macrostructure components of narratives. It was also revealed that the students had equal performance in spoken and written narrative. Finally, factor analysis manifested that group, sex, hearing age, and educational level of children might alter the outcome measures in various interactions. Conclusion. Although cochlear implantation was more effective than hearing aid on spoken and written narrative skills, the Persian-speaking students with hearing impairments were seen to need additional trainings on microstructure components of spoken/written narrative.
