Diversification of the molecular clockwork for tissue-specific function: insight from a novel Drosophila Clock mutant homologous to a mouse Clock allele

The circadian clock system enables organisms to anticipate the rhythmic environmental changes and to manifest behavior and physiology at advantageous times of the day. Transcriptional/ translational feedback loop (TTFL) is the basic feature of the eukaryotic circadian clock and is based on the rhythmic association of circadian transcriptional activator and repressor. In Drosophila, repression of dCLOCK/CYCLE (dCLK/CYC) mediated transcription by PERIOD (PER) is critical for inducing circadian rhythms of gene expression. Pacemaker neurons in the brain control specific circadian behaviors upon environmental timing cues such as light and temperature cycle. We show that amino acids 657-707 of dCLK are important for the transcriptional activation and the association with PER both in vitro and in vivo. Flies expressing dCLK lacking AA657-707 in Clkout genetic background, homologous to the mouse Clock allele where exon 19 region is deleted, display pacemaker-neuron-dependent perturbation of the molecular clockwork. The molecular rhythms in light-cycle-sensitive pacemaker neurons such as ventral lateral neurons (LNvs) were significantly disrupted, but those in temperature-cycle-sensitive pacemaker neurons such as dorsal neurons (DNs) were robust. Our results suggest that the dCLK-controlled TTFL diversify in a pacemaker-neuron-dependent manner which may contribute to specific functions such as different sensitivities to entraining cues. DO YOUNG CONSUMERS CARE ABOUT COUNTRY-OF-ORIGIN OF LUXURY FASHION BRANDS?

The luxury market has become a prevalent global economic sector which is estimated to reach $442 billion by 2025 (Arienti, Levato, Kamel, & Montgolfier, 2018). Sales revenue in the luxury market has grown not only in the US and EU, but also in emerging economies with rapid economic expansion, such as China and India (Shukla, 2010; Tynan, McKechnie, & Chhuon, 2010). Young consumers (i.e., millennials and Gen Z) comprise the fastest growing group of purchasers of luxury goods (D’Arpizio, Levato, Prete, Del Fabbro, & de Montgolfier, 2019). Subsequently, marketers are interested in factors that affect young consumers’ decision-making process in luxury fashion goods consumption. It is a challenge for marketers to appeal to young consumers because abrand or brand name is less important to them than it has been for older generations (Forte, 2019). Country-of-origin (CoO) is relatively important for luxury purchase compared to non-luxury purchase (Godey et al., 2012). In the context of luxury brand consumption, research suggests that attitude functions (social-adjustive, value-expressive, hedonic, and utilitarian) also have an impact on luxury purchase intentions (Schade, Hegner, Horstmann, & Brinkmann, 2016). This study thus investigates significant factors influencing luxury brand purchase among young consumers. Specifically, we draw from “Functional Theories of Attitudes” (Grewal, Mehta, & Kardes, 2004) as a framework to investigate the effects of CoO on consumers’ attitude functions and luxury brand purchase intentions.

The effect of social connectedness on consumer adoption of social commerce in apparel shopping

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of social connectedness on social media users’ attitudes and intentions towards adopting social commerce in the technology acceptance model (TAM). Data collected from young adult social media users (n = 446) in the US support the proposed model. A structural equation model shows that social connectedness positively influences social media users’ perceptions of ease of use, usefulness, and enjoyment, which in turn, influence their attitudes and intentions towards adopting social commerce in apparel shopping. The impact of social connectedness is stronger on perceived ease of use than other TAM variables. Perceived enjoyment has the strongest impact on attitudes, and attitudes strongly influence consumer intentions for adopting social commerce for apparel purchases. Results of this study reveal that social connectedness enhances social media users’ perceptions of social commerce and positively leads to the adoption of social commerce in apparel shopping. Findings indicate that social connectedness has an indirect effect on attitudes towards social commerce through utilitarian (i.e., ease of use and usefulness) and hedonic (i.e., enjoyment) perceptions of social commerce. These findings highlight the importance of social connectedness through utilitarian and hedonic perceptions in enhancing consumers’ adoption of social commerce for purchasing apparel products.

The theory of the developmental state that explains the economic development of South Korea has made the state an entity separate from society. However, the state is not an actor with a conscious intent, but is rather an effect of multi-layered practices and actions. This essay approaches the state as power that structures the field of possible actions and demonstrates that gender is the pivot in the developmental state regime in South Korea. The governmentality of the developmental state subjectified individuals as entirely gendered beings, in which women pursued the accomplishment of modern life via their family. The gendered division of labor was the basis of the developmental state, which has dissolved as gendered subjects are transformed into degendered subjects in a neoliberal society.

인구의 자연성과 통치 테크놀로지

이 글은 1968년에 대한가족계획협회의 주도로 조직된 후 1977년 새마을부녀회로 통합되기까지 9년간 지속된 가족계획어머니회에 관한 연구이다. 가족계획어머니회는 가임여성들의 피임실천을 조직하기 위해 법정 리·동 단위에 만들어진 전국 규모의 지역 여성조직이었다. 대한가족계획협회의 공식간행물 및 주요 인물들의 회고에서 가족계획 사업의 성공을 가져온 핵심 요인으로 지목될만큼 가족계획어머니회는 가족계획 사업의 주요한 일부였다. 가족계획어머니회의 조직 및 운영, 각종 조사사업에 대한 분석을 통해 이 연구는 1960-70년대 한국에서 전개되기 시작한 통치의 테크놀로지에 주목한다. 가족계획어머니회를 둘러싼 다기한 통치의 실천들은 인구집단에 내재된 변수와 속성들을 보다 정확하게 계측하고 분석함으로써 이를 변형시키는 요인과 기술을 찾아내는 문제가 이 당시 중요하게 부상하였음을 드러낸다. 이는 주권자-신민의 관계로 환원되지 않는 통치 대상으로서 인구의 등장, 그리고 주권자의 권력으로 완전히 환원되지 않는 이른바 통치성의 등장이 이 시대에 이루어졌음을 보여주는 것이다. This study focuses on the family planning Mothers’ Clubs, which had been organized by the Planned Parenthood Federation of Korea (PPFK) in 1968 and operated until 1977 when the Clubs were integrated into Saemaul Women’s Clubs. The Mothers’ Clubs were local organizations of childbearing-aged women at the legal Li and Dong levels, and aimed at stimulating and encouraging the practice of contraception by women in rural areas. The Mothers’ Clubs were essential for the Family Planning Program; official publications of the PPFK as well as main leaders of the program pointed it out as a core factor that brought about the successful outcome of the program. This study pays special attention to South Korea’s technological advances during the program while analyzing the organization, operation and various research projects of the Mothers’ Clubs. Various governmental practices surrounding the Mothers’ Clubs reveal that it emerged as an important issue?finding out technologies and mechanisms to transform the population through measuring and analyzing accurately. This shows the emergence of the population as the target of government/governing, which cannot be reduced to the relationship between sovereign and subjects. It also shows governmentality appeared in the era, which is not to be reduced sovereign power.

서사화되지 않는 꿈 - 개인화와 저소득층 여성 청소년의 삶

꿈은 2000년대 이후 한국의 교육현장에서 교육정책의 새로운 기조를 집약하는 용어로 부상했다. 불평등을 다루는 최근의 사회학 연구 경향 역시 꿈의 불평등에 관심을 기울이고 있다. 이 글은 저소득층 여성 청소년 네 명의 사례를 통해 이들의 꿈에 결여된 서사성의 차원에 주목한다. 꿈은 상상된 미래를 현재와 인과적으로 연결시키는 서사성을 핵심으로 하며 미래에 정향된 현재의 실천을 불러일으킨다. 꿈과 서사의 이러한 관계는 생애 일대기의 집합적 궤적이 무너지는 개인화의 전개와 함께 새로운 맥락에 놓이게 되었다. 고용체계와 가족적 결속의 변화는 스스로의 일대기를 서사적으로 완성해야 할 책무를 오로지 개인에게 부여하며, 그 효과는 차별적으로 작동한다. 이 연구는 여성 청소년 네 명의 서사화되지 않는 꿈을 통해 상상된 미래와 현재의 실천을 연결시키는 꿈의 서사성이 이들의 삶과 어떻게 괴리되는지를 드러내고 이를 개인화가 야기하는 제도종속성과 시장종속성의 심화를 통해 설명하고 있다. Dream has been used since the 2000s as a term to convey the gist of a new trend of education policy in the field of education in South Korea. Sociological research on inequality has also devoted attention to the inequality of dreaming. This study explores the cases of four adolescent girls from the lower class and focuses on the narrative that is absent from their dreams. Narrative is the kernel of dreams which connects the present to the imagined future and generates practices oriented to the future. The relationship between dreams and narrative has been situated within a new context along with the process of individualization, in which the aspect of collective trajectory of biography diminishes. The transformation of employment systems and family relationships forces individuals to narrate and accomplish their own biography by themselves, which has an uneven impact on people’s lives. This study explains the disjunction between the narrativity of dream and unnarrated lives of four adolescent girls using a theoretical approach to examine dependency on institutions and capitalist markets caused by individualization.

이육사의 문학관과 ‘광야(曠野)’의 사상성

본 논문은 ‘저항시인’으로 불리는 이육사의 사상적 측면을 보다 성실하게 정독하고 그 의미를 탐색하고자 했다. 문학연구에서 사상성은 작가 개인의 사상이 아닌 텍스트의 사상성을 문제 삼는다는 것은 상식에 가깝다. 그런데 이육사의 사상성은 삶과 문학이 일치되는 지점에서 작동된다는 점에서 특이하다. 이육사는 ‘노신 정신’에 주목하였고 그로부터 ‘문예’가 정치적인 ‘운동’일 수 있다는 사상, 예술과 정치가 결합된 것으로서 ‘문학’을 추구해야 한다는 신념을 발전시켰다. 이육사는 당대 지성론에 참여하여 지성론이 간과하고 있던 측면, 즉 후대에 물려줄 문화적 전통과 교양의 중요성을 역설했다. 이육사의 지성론은 주체적이고 창조적인 정신을 강조할 뿐만 아니라 ‘근육의 행동’에 가까운 전위적인 행동주의를 은폐한다는 점에서 여타 지성론과 변별된다. 한편1940년 1월에 발표된 『절정』을 비롯하여 유고시『광야』, 『꽃』등 ‘광야’ 삼부작에서는 겨울의 황량한 만주 벌판을 시적 배경으로 절망에 대처하는 사상으로서 ‘니체주의’를 읽어낼 수 있었다. 이는 비극적 순간을 극복하는 원시적 생명력을 강조한다는 점에서 ‘광야(대지)’의 사상성이라고 명명할 수 있다. 행동주의와 니체주의는 이육사 문학이 보여준 사상성의 요체이다. 그가 최후의 순간까지도 쓰리라 선언한 “金剛心의 시”란, 자신의 사상을 포기하지 않겠다는 의지를 은유적으로 표명한 것이다. 그는 문예의 정치적 운동성을 주장하며 삶을 통해 이를 체현했는데, 바로 이 점이야말로 이육사를 우리가 저항시인으로 부를 수밖에 없는 근본적 이유일 것이다. This paper deeply examines the ideological aspects of Lee Yuk-sa, who is known as a “poet of resistance”, in a search for meaning. Though Lee Yuk-sa"s idea can be seen through his literature, the idea of the poet himself cannot. When translating Chinese literature, Lee Yuk-sa was influenced by the “spirit of Lu Hsun.” He pursued “literature” as a combination of art and politics, such that “literary art” could be understood as a kind of political “movement.” This reveals the significance of his creative activity as a practical act that penetrated since the mid-1930s. He participated in noetics and emphasized the importance of cultural traditions and cultures that would be handed down to future generations. Lee Yuk-sa’s theory of intellect can be distinguished from that of other intellectuals in that it not only the subjective and creative mind, but also avant-garde activism, which was close to belif in “muscle behavior.” On the other hand, in the representative poems “Wilderness” and “Flower”, published posthumously, one can find elements of Nietzscheism. They represent the idea of “wilderness(earth)” by portraying life"s primitive force overcoming a tragic moment. We find, then, that Behaviorism and Nietzscheism are the essence of Lee Yuk-sa’s literary work. The “Poem of Geumgangsim(금강심)”, which he proclaimed as his turth up to very end, is a metaphorical expression of his strong desire not to give up on his ideas.

박태원 초기 단편의 ‘환상성’ 연구 - 소외 극복의 방법으로서의 환상성을 중심으로

In the early-year short stories written by Park Taewon, the protagonists imagine an “idealized self” and reconstruct their fragmented self by identifying with their idealized self. At times of extreme loneliness and solitude, they summon their “alter ego” who is put in the same situation to act as a comfort to overcome their present reality. The special ‘amusement’ world held by these alter egos subverts the oppressive reality, and it can be seen as a metaphor for the act of writing. When the protagonists try to overcome their isolated state with a desire for others, in most cases, the object of this desire is women. When these women are not bought into the protagonists’ world and refuse to respond to their desire, they are seen as demonic. Moreover, the protagonists see others as evil in an attempt to establish their own worlds more firmly. In the author’s stories, fantastic elements work as a strategy for marginalized protagonists to overcome their critical situations and, as such, are conjured based on the protagonists’ desires. Above all, fantastic elements can be seen as one of the author’s ways of perceiving the world through writing, and they are important as they are tied to the author’s attempt to construct a world based on language. Moreover, such fantastic elements provide an important tool to broadly understand the works of Park Taewon, including both his early-year modernist novels and later historical novels.
