Mesenteric venous thrombosis is rare but clinically important because it can cause ischemia or infarction in the small intestine. Unless it is diagnosed in time, the patient die eventually. However, the diagnosis is difficult because patients often present with nonspecific abdominal symptoms. Furthermore, if it occurs in young individuals without any known predisposing factor, the diagnosis may become more difficult. Recently, the development of modern imaging techniques (particularly ultrasonography, duplex scanning, and computed tomography) have enabled early recognition of this disease. We report a case of mesenteric venous thrombosis and deep vein thrombosis of left lower extremity. A patient was admitted to our hospital due to continuous, dull abdominal pain. The simple abdomen examination showed abnormal gas pattern probably due to small bowel edema. Abdominal computerized tomography revealed mesenteric venous thrombosis with bowel wall thickenings. Bowel resection was performed and the patient was recovered soon. Mesenteric venous thrombosis was known to be secondary to protein S deficiency later.

The ice cream, a type of freezing food of condensed state of milk, richer in nutritions and easily available in all seasons, is one of luxuary items. The fatty acids in the milk is the most important component of ice cream which not only improve the nutritional value but also is easier digestive, more rapidly absorbed than those of plant and also has influence up the quality of the goods. In order to see the fatty acid distribution of the fats in the ice cream on the market, the ice creams on the market were selected in accordance with things most in demands of each manufacture divided into the shape. and analyzed for the concentration of total lipid, acid value, iodine value and saponification value. For the compositional analysis of fatty acid of milk as basis and those gas liquid chromatography was also used. The following were the results obtained. 1) The average total lipids in milk and, the 3 kind of ice creams shaped carton, cone and bar were 3.04, 8.34, 6.41, and 5.4% respectively. 2) The average acid values of milk and each of 3-different type of ice creams shaped carton, cone and bar were 0.72, 0.62, 0.76, and 0.95 respectively. 3) The soponification values. Ranged from 180 to 260, varied great degree depending upon. the different manufactures, the average saponification value of the milk and each type of ice cream shaped carton, cone and bar were 208, 226, 226 and 215 respectively. 4) The iodine values varying great degree upon the different manufactures ranged from 10 to 32, the average values of milk and each type of ice cream shaped carton, cone and bar were 29, 20, 19 and 22 respectively. 5) The fatty acids analyzed for milk and ice cream, were 17-different kind, for the milk palmitic acid appeared principal constituents which valued 29.8%, whereas oleic acid were 27.1%. Since the compositions of fatty acid in ice creams for each different manufacture varied so great degree from manufacture to manufacture that the average values of those for the same shaped ice creams seems to have no meaning, if the compositions of fatty acid in the ice cream were considered according to the manufactures such as A, B, C, D and E companies. 27.4% lauric acid which was principal constituents, 17.8% palmitic acid and 11.8% oleic acid which was equal to 1/2 of that in the milk were found in the product of A company, 28.2% oleic acid and 27.8% palmitic acid which had similar pattern with the composition as that of milk in the product of B company, 25.5% palmitic acid, 22.7% oleic acid and 11.6% lauric acid in the product of C company, 34.4% lauric acid, 15.6% palmitic acid and 8.6% oleic acid which amounts to 1/3 of that in the milk in the product of D company, and 24.6% lauric acid and 18% palmitatic acid in the product of E company respectively. For the ratio of saturated to unsaturated fatty acid, these were 84 : 16 in the product of At 62 : 38 in the product of B, 68 : 32 in the product of C, 88 : 12 in the product of D, 79 : 21 in the product of E respectively, while this ratio for milk was 63 : 37. Although the compositional characteristic of fatty acids in the ice creams varied great degree according to the manufactures, all kinds of different shaped product showed the same pattern in composition regardless of the type of ice cream shaped in provided they were made in the same company. The lauric acid was more exuberant, however oleic acid, unsaturated fatty acid, was of less quantity than in the milk fat. In general, there was less quantity of unsaturated fatty acid in the ice creams compared with in milk.

Little is know the effect of aerobic on respiro-circulatory in children. Counteration respiro-circulatory study was performed at rest in 12girls aged 10.5∼12.6(4∼6 year student). Age 10.5(4 year student) had increased ventilation(50∼85 L/min) during exercise. Age 12.6(6 year student) had increased ventilation(70∼100 L/min) during exercise. Age 10.5(4 year student) was V'O_2 intake during exercase(0.5 L/min) and 6 year student was V'O_2 intake during exercise(1.2L/min). There was difference in respiro-circulatory and V'O_2 intake between the two groups. These data show that intensive aerobic exercise than anaerobic exercise in children befor after adolescence.

The author obtained the following results through the microscopic observation of fat storing cells in livers of 35 mice, 17 of them are normally fed mice containing 8 female, and 18 of them are fasted. 1. Concerning the number and morphological characteristics of fat storing cells of liver, no sexual difference were noted. 2. A large number of the fat storing cell contains single fat droplet measuring 2 to 3 microns in diameter. 3. The number of fat storing cell increased by fasting(short duration). The maximum number was observed at the 48 hrs. fasting group and gradual decrease was noted thereafter. 4. The rate of appearance of single fat droplet in the cell reduced when the cell number increased.

The vertical curve of railway is installed in changing point where the gradient is more than a certain degree to ensure safe operation of train and comfort of passengers. As a result of CAD work with 3D coordination by using the existing equation, it was found that the simple equation about vertical curve installation suggested in the surveying engineering or railway regulations did not reflect theoretical curvature of circular curve in a case of steep grade and large vertical radius. In this study, for derive precision equation and transition curve about vertical curve, gradient parameters, equation of circles and transition curve equation were used, and it was verified by CAD that the derived equation is exactly satisfied with parameters of geometrical circular and transition curve. This equation could be used to provide more smoothing operation of train and comfort of passengers on vertical curves, especially in case that railway requires precision vertical alignment of track such as super high-speed railway, LRT or Maglev system.
Molecular Mapping of Resistant Genes to Brown Planthopper, Bphl and bph2, in Rice

This study was carried out to map Bphl and bph2 gene in Mudgo and Sangju13 (Oryza sativa L.) respectively conferring resistance to brown plan-thopper (BPH) and to establish the marker-assisted selection (MAS) system. Bulked seedling (grown for 20 days) test was conducted with the 73 F4 lines derived from a cross between Nagdongbyeo and Mudgo for Bphl and with 53 BC3F5 lines derived from the Milyang95/Sangju13 cross for bph2. Bph1 was mapped between RG413 and RG901 on chromo-some 12 at a distance of 7.5 cM from RG413 and 8.4 cM from RG90l. A recessive gene bph2 was located near RZ76 on chromosome 12 at a distance of 14.4 cM. Bphl and bph2 were linked to each other with a distance of about 30 cM. An RFLP marker, RG413 linked to Bphl, was converted to an STS marker to facilitate the marker-assisted selection. BPH resistant genotypes could be selected with 92% accuracy in a population derived from a line of NM47-B-B.

The survival and growth of epithelial cells depends on adhesion to the extracellular matrix. An adhesion signal may regulate the initiation of differentiation, since epidermal kerati-nocytes differentiate as they leave the basement membrane. A metabolically dead comified cell envelope is the end point of epidermal differentiation so that this process may be viewed as a specialized form of programmed cell death. In order to investigate the precise cellular signaling events leading to terminal differentiation of keratinocytes, we have utilized HaCaT cells to monitor the biological consequences of Ca^(2+) stimulation and numerous downstream signaling pathways, including activation of the extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase (ERK) pathway and activation of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K). The results presented in this study show that Ca^(2+) function as potent agents for the differentiation of HaCaT keratinocytes, and this differentiation depends on the activation of ERK, Protein kinase B (PKB) and p70 ribosomal protein S6 kinase (p70S6K). Finally, the results show that the expression of Activator protein 1 (AP-1; c-Jun and c-Fos) increased following Ca^(2+)-mediated differentiation of HaCaT cells, suggesting that ERK-mediated AP-1 expression is critical for initiating the terminal, differentiation of keratinocytes.
