Effect of Packaging on Keeping Quality of Fresh Ginseng

Fresh ginseng was packed by using available commercial plastic films of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), cast polypropylene (CPP) and low density polyethylene (LDPE). PVC was used as a wrapping on polystyrene tray, and CPP and LDPE were applied as pouch packages. Gas composition of the package and keeping quality of ginseng in the packages were evaluated for 20 day storage at 5. LDPE (27 thick) Package modified the Package atmosphere to 11.7% O2 and 2.1% CO₂, gave low microbial growth and good sensory score after 20 day storage.

<P><B>Summary</B></P><P>The cause of elevated level of amyloid β‐peptide (Aβ42) in common late‐onset sporadic [Alzheimer’s disease (AD)] has not been established. Here, we show that the membrane lipid peroxidation product 4‐hydroxynonenal (HNE) is associated with amyloid and neurodegenerative pathologies in AD and that it enhances γ‐secretase activity and Aβ42 production in neurons. The γ‐secretase substrate receptor, nicastrin, was found to be modified by HNE in cultured neurons and in brain specimens from patients with AD, in which HNE–nicastrin levels were found to be correlated with increased γ‐secretase activity and Aβ plaque burden. Furthermore, HNE modification of nicastrin enhanced its binding to the γ‐secretase substrate, amyloid precursor protein (APP) C99. In addition, the stimulation of γ‐secretase activity and Aβ42 production by HNE were blocked by an HNE‐scavenging histidine analog in a 3xTgAD mouse model of AD. These findings suggest a specific molecular mechanism by which oxidative stress increases Aβ42 production in AD and identify HNE as a novel therapeutic target upstream of the γ‐secretase cleavage of APP.</P>
아크릴을 활용한 이중 차페 Apron의 F-18 차폐 효율 분석

PET/CT 검사 시 사용되는 F-18은 양전자를 방출하는 방사성동위원소이며, 높은 에너지의 소멸감마선과 베타선은 방사선작업종사자의 피폭을 초래하는 원인이 된다. 본 연구에서는 핵의학과에서 근무하는 방사선작업종사자의 피폭선량 저감방안의 일환으로, F-18에 대한 Apron의 낮은 차폐 효율의 원인을 규명하고, 아크릴로 이중 차폐한 Apron의 실효성을 평가하였다. L-Block, Apron+아크릴, Apron, 아크릴+Apron, 아크릴 다섯 개의 차폐체를 이용하여 선량을 측정하고, 몬테카를로 시뮬레이션을 수행하여 경향성을 비교하였다. 그 결과, 아크릴로 이중 차폐한 Apron의 차폐율이 Apron 단독 차폐한 경우보다 약 4~8% 높은 차폐효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 사용자의 활동성에 크게 영향이 가지 않는 범위 안에서 적절한 두께의 아크릴로 이중 차폐한 개인방호복은 방사선 작업종사자의 피폭저감화에 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이다. Fluorine-18 used in PET/CT scans is a radioactive isotope that emits positrons, and high energy annihilation gamma rays and beta rays cause exposure to radiation workers. In this study, as part of a plan to reduce the exposure dose of radiation workers working in the Department of Nuclear Medicine, the cause of the low shielding efficiency of Apron for F-18 was identified, and the effectiveness of the Apron double-shielded with acrylic was evaluated. L-Block, Apron+acrylic, Apron, Acrylic+Apron, and Acrylic five shields are used to measure the dose, and the tendencies were compared by performing a Monte Carlo simulation. As a result, it was found that the shielding rate of Apron double shielded with acrylic was about 4 to 8% higher than that of Apron single shielded. To the extent that it does not significantly affect the user s activity, double-shielded personal protective clothing with an appropriate acrylic thickness could help reduce radiation workers’ exposure.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this work, we propose a surgical suture that can sustainably release diclofenac (DF) for the local pain relief of surgical wounds. We separately fabricated a DF-loaded strand composed of a biodegradable polymer, poly(lactic-<I>co</I>-glycolic acid) (PLGA), which was then braided with a surgical suture already in clinical use, i.e., VICRYL™. In this way, the drug-delivery suture presented herein could release DF in a sustained manner for 10days while maintaining the mechanical strength needed for wound closure. According to the in vivo results of an induced-pain animal model, the drug-delivery suture mitigated pain throughout the period of persistent pain. The histological analysis of tissue around the sutures showed that the drug-delivery suture exhibited biocompatibility comparable to that of the VICRYL™ suture in clinical use.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Surgical suture assembled with a drug-delivery polymer strand is proposed. </LI> <LI> Drug is released from the suture in a sustained manner. </LI> <LI> The mechanical strength needed for wound closure is retained. </LI> <LI> Drug-delivery suture can mitigate the pain in pain-induced animal models. </LI> </UL> </P>

Chronic alcohol consumption contributes to numerous diseases, including cancers, cardiovascular diseases, and liver cirrhosis. Epidemiological studies have shown that excessive alcohol consumption is a risk factor for dementia. Along this line, Alzheimer`s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia and is caused by the accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ plaques in neurons. In this study, we hypothesized that chronic ethanol consumption is associated with pathological processing of APP in AD. To investigate the relationship between chronic alcohol consumption and Aβ production, brain samples from rats fed an alcohol liquid diet for 5 weeks were analyzed. We show that the expression levels of APP, BACE1, and immature nicastrin were increased in the cerebellum, hippocampus, and striatum of the alcohol-fed group compared to the control group. Total nicastrin and PS1 levels were induced in the hippocampus of alcohol-fed rats. These data suggest that the altered expression of APP and Aβ-producing enzymes possibly contributes to the chronic alcohol consumption-mediated pathogenesis of AD. [BMB reports 2011; 44(2): 135-139]
