(A) Visualized Analysis Study on the Macro/Micro perspectives of Sun YiGiang's Piano Performance
Sun Yigiang, the first pianist in China to offer public performance of Western Concerto after the Cultural Revolution, is also a rare example of "trinity" musicians from China (piano performer, composer and educator) to be actively contributing to global society. SUN received a hybrid education of Chinese, Russian, UK and USA style, while he personally witnesses all the historical milestones in China’s twentieth century (foundation of PRC, Cultural Revolution, Reformation and Opening-up, Cross-Century, etc.). Therefore, SUN's performance carries an explicit era characteristic and makes critical contributions to modern Chinese music. From 1954 to 2020, retrieved records for SUN's music activity include 433 piano concerts and fourteen music compositions. The two most famous compositions from him, piano solo "Spring Dance" and "Dancing Grains", have been included in 20 albums published in different countries with more than 600 performances. Regarding this, the author propose the two music and nine other classical piano solo pieces as research sample to study on the musical factors from various perspectives, including the rhythm, tempo, dynamic, timbre, trilling and stage performance. Major part of the research will be conducted with computer-aided visualized analysis. This dissertation may be divided into three parts, the introduction, the research content and the conclusion. In the first part (Chapter One), the author will state the research purpose, scope and methodologies to be applied, followed by a brief introduction of research structure and procedures. For the research part, the author will start with a review of current research and the biography SUN's personal artistic life, covering the different stages among his life in China and North America. Next a description will be given on the methodology of piano performance visualized analysis. Combining these prerequisites, the author will then first perform a comparative visualized study on the two pieces composed by SUN in Chapter three and then study the evolution of SUN's performance feature in nine classical pieces. Furthermore, Chapter four sorts out SUN's performance characteristics from the macro and micro level according to the third chapter. All the conclusions generated in this dissertation are based on quantitated and visualized analysis. Outcome of the study (figures and data) helps researcher to understand more comprehensively on the characteristics from different performance versions, while also provides reference for evaluation in future piano performance and teaching activities. 순이강은 개혁개방 이후 중국에서 서양 협주곡을 연주한 최초의 피아니스트이며, 국제 음악계에서 활약하는 피아노 아티스트, 피아노 작곡가, 피아노 교육자로 현대 중국 음악 발전에 있어 보기 드문 인물이다. 그는 중국, 러시아, 영국, 미국에서 피아노 연주 교육을 받았으며, 20세기 중화인민공화국 건국, 문화대혁명, 개혁개방, 세기 전환 등 중국의 주요 역사적 사건들을 경험하였다. 그의 연주는 시대적인 색채를 띄고 있으며 중국 피아노 음악 역사에 큰 기여를 하였다. 1954년부터 2020년까지 순이강은 총 433회의 피아노 콘서트를 열었고 14개의 피아노 관련 곡을 작곡했으며, 그 중 솔로곡 <Spring Dance(春舞), <Dancing Grains(谷粒飞舞)>가 세계 각국에 수록되어 있다. 이 두 작품은 총 20개의 악보 컬렉션과 610개의 연주 녹음으로 순이강의 작품으로 가장 많이 연주된 두 작품이다. 본 연구는 위에서 언급한 순이강이 연주한 두 개의 원작 피아노 음악 작품과 시기별 9곡의 피아노 음악 작품을 중심으로 리듬, 속도, 강도, 음색, 트릴(trill) 및 무대 공연과 같은 다차원의 음악적 요소를 연구 대상으로 삼고 컴퓨터 매개변수 시각화 기술을 사용하여 순이강 연주의 형태적 특징을 분석하려고 한다. 본 연구는 서론, 본론, 결론으로 구성되어 있으며 서론은 연구 목적과 의의, 연구 범위 및 방법, 선행 연구로 구성되어 있다. 제2장은 연구의 구성 및 절차. 순이강의 삶과 피아노 연주 및 창작 경험으로 중국과 미국에서 그의 예술적 경력에 대해 연구, 시각화 피아노 연주 방법의 개요이다. 제3장 제1절에서는 작품 <Spring Dance>와 <Dancing Grains>를 대상으로 순이강과 여러 나라의 주류 연주자들의 녹음 버전을 시각적으로 비교하고, 제2절에서는 순이강이 <John Sun>앨범에서 연주된 9곡의 각 시기별의 음악작품을 대상으로 거시적 및 미시적 관점에서 순이강의 연주를 분석한다. 제4장은 3장을 기반으로 각 시기의 피아노곡에서 순이강 연주 형태의 적용을 정리한다. 본 연구의 결론은 컴퓨터 시각화 및 정량화 분석을 기반으로 정리하고 정리된 그래픽과 데이터는 향후 피아노 연주 교육 및 연주에 대한 참조 평가 지표를 제공할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 연구자들이 연주 버전의 특성과 스타일을 보다 명확하게 이해하는 데 도움을 제공할 뿐만 아니라, 개념 및 기술적 문제를 해결하는 데 기여할 수 있을 것이다.
