This dissertation studies Walt Whitman's mystic experience being the root of all his thoughts and poetry. Through the mystic experience, he tries to get over the harsh realities of life and create a new order for the next generation. Viewed in this light, to surmount difficulties and to create the new order, Whitman's thoughts are pragmatic and transcendental. This tendency is similar to Joseph Campbell's mythical analysis and Ralph Waldo Emerson's transcendentalism. The characteristic of Whitman's transcendentalism is to get over the tough realities of life and create a new culture, and requires the advancement and conversion of the consciousness, which are similar to Campbell's mystic imagination and Emerson's transcendentalism. Campbell believes that all mankind's problems lie in the oblivion of the mankind's root and entity, and that to overcome these problems, advancement and conversion of the consciousness are needed. Whitman, like Emerson, an initiator of transcendentalism, seeks for a way to improve the condition of life. Whitman's transcendental aspiration to establish a new culture and history is enhanced by his mystic experience. The mystic awareness of oneness makes an individual aware of the original energy flowing without reserve and enlarging the consciousness. This awareness is the foundation of Whitman's poetry. The realization of the unity of all beings is founded in Whitman's idea of democracy, which rejects differences. His belief in the eternity of soul is expressed in his concept of immorality. As Campbell and Emerson find the solution to agony in life, in a man's dignity and the harmony of nature, Whitman views the vision of overcoming obstacles and inconsistency in the mystical experiences. An approach to the truth of the ultimate existence through the mystic experiences represents the understanding of the principle of the universe and the roles of oneself and others which were fixated as an idea of tradition and common ideas. Understanding and search for the ultimate entities are the common features of Whitman's mystic experiences. Whitman's poems might be a guide for the future poets like the Bible showing the directions of human beings.

Robots have been used to automate many tasks, and yet designing robots remains largely a manual process. This thesis seeks to "automate automation" by developing methods to automate both design of the mechanism and control of the robot. To make these automation problems tractable, we use modular robots, as their components can be readily rearranged to form a customized robot for each new task. This work addresses two problems: control over many different modular designs, and selecting the best design for each task.First, we present a control framework geared toward the case where a large number of designs are made from a set of modules, such that it would be prohibitively expensive to create a new control policy from scratch for each robot design. We introduce modular policies that learn to control a range of designs in one training process. In the policy architecture, information about the dynamics and controls is shared among modules of the same type via shared neural network parameters. We use deep reinforcement learning algorithms to train the policies on multiple designs and environments simultaneously. We then show that modular policies can transfer to new designs and environments not seen in training. With a modular control framework in place, we apply it to select the best robot designs for specific tasks. We frame design optimization as a sequential decision making problem in which modular robots are incrementally constructed one module at a time. We then implement a deep reinforcement learning approach to train a design value function, an estimate of how each module added to the design will impact performance. The design value function serves as a search heuristic to efficiently identify the best design for each new task. This method is applied to two classes of robots: designing manipulators to reach locations in a workspace, and designing mobile robots to traverse a non-flat terrain.Through these contributions, this thesis shows that leveraging modularity in learning enables the creation and transfer of robot behaviors across tasks and designs.

      • The on-site supervision of school counseling interns: An exploratory study of supervisory variables

This exploratory study examined school counseling interns' perceptions about their site-based supervision and the school counselors who provide it. Predictor measures included employment and demographic variables, interns' satisfaction with supervision, interns' perception of their site-supervisors' feedback, interns' perception of the supervisory working alliance, and interns' perception of their site supervisor's overall professionalism. The criterion measure was interns' perceived self-efficacy. Four pilot instruments were developed for use in this study---the Supervisory Feedback Style Assessment, the Supervisory Feedback Style Improvement Assessment, the School Counseling On-site Supervisor Professionalism Assessment, and the School Counseling Intern Self-efficacy Scale. Results showed that interns' self-efficacy was best predicted by the supervisory working alliance, but the collinearity of the predictor measures complicated interpretation of the findings. Other results showed significant positive relationships between site-supervisors' clinical supervision status and the predictor measures. Also, incongruity existed between the type of supervisory feedback that interns received and what they perceived would improve their supervision. Implications for the profession and suggestions for follow-up research are offered.

Organizational classifications are critical to a wide variety of stakeholders. Within the domain of higher education, researchers use established classifications for sample selection or within empirical models to account for unobserved organizational characteristics. Colleges and universities, as well as their political principals, often use classifications to form peer-groups and reference sets through which organizational performance is assessed. More broadly, classifications provide aspirational archetypes to an organizational field.Using American higher education as the empirical context, this dissertation introduces Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) as a method to identify the structure of an organizational field and to classify organizations within this structure. Using measures of model fit and concerns for interpretability, this investigation determined that 13 distinctive organizational designs are present in the field of American higher education. Derived groupings are compared to the 2018 Basic Classification from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Opportunities and challenges for operationalizing this derived classification are discussed.

      • Professional teachers for quality education: Characteristics of teachers certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) was established in 1987 to create national teaching standards and a national certification process for experienced teachers. Subsequently, participation among teachers in the United States has grown rapidly, indicating that the Board has succeeded in capturing the imagination of many stakeholder groups in education. There has also been some criticism of the Board, including concerns about a lack of empirical evidence supporting national certification of teachers. To address this problem, the researcher explored teaching-related attitudes of 836 National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) compared with attitudes of a national sample of 1,089 teachers not certified by the Board (Non-NBCTs). A total of 1,925 teachers participated in the study, including 91% of all NBCTs certified at the time of the study. Six Likert-type scales were used to measure attitude characteristics associated by previous research with effective teaching or related behaviors. The methods of analysis included logistic regression models predicting which participants were NBCTs and which were not. Demographic findings and participant comments were also reported. Five of the six hypotheses were supported. NBCTs in the study had significantly higher career commitment, professional orientation, internal efficacy, cooperation, and job satisfaction. However, no difference in organizational commitment was found. The characteristic that most distinguished NBCTs was their lower average level of external efficacy: the belief that conditions external to schools largely determine educational outcomes of schooling. NBCTs were much more likely to believe that they could find a way to teach each student successfully, regardless of home environment or other external conditions. Logistic regression models predicted group membership with 74%–81% accuracy. The typical NBCT was a 46-year-old female teacher, who had a master's degree plus 18 graduate credits, 18 years of experience, and tenure in a suburban or urban elementary school. The results showed that, compared to Non-NBCTs, NBCTs were likely to be accomplished people, with a stronger sense of classroom responsibility, efficacy, career commitment, professionalism, and collegiality. To the extent that these characteristics can promote desired educational outcomes, NBCTs could be expected to offer school systems substantial benefits.
