The performance of crossover pieces requires the performer to have knowledge and musical facility in numerous styles. Brad Turner's new work for solo trumpet, jazz rhythm section and strings, Burns Bog, requires the performer to have knowledge of both classical and jazz styles. In order to establish the history of these two styles influencing each other, I discuss briefly works by Stravinsky, Copland, Walton and Ellington. To establish the relevance of crossover works today, I discuss three premiere trumpet soloists in the genre. My paper focuses on the performance practice issues that a classical player would face preparing Burns Bog. These issues include jazz articulation and phrasing, using mutes, choice of trumpets, ensemble issues, as well as a brief section on practice techniques. The unique performance demands of crossover works require the musician to have extensive knowledge of both idioms. It is my hope that this paper provides a pathway for musicians to approach learning not only Burns Bog, but other crossover works as well.
