정치지리학적 연구는 영토에 관한 분석에서 상당한 발전을 거쳐 왔으며, 오늘날 정치지리학은 영토 문제와 관련하여 정치적 과정이 얼마나 복잡한 영향을 미치는지에 대한 탐구를 심도 있게 수행하고 있다. 지리학자들의 선구적 연구에서 출발한 정치지리학은 현대 인문지리학, 특히 지정학과 국경 문제에 대한 연구에 중요한 분야로서 부상하였다. 오늘날 세계화가 빠르게 진행되는 상황에서 국경 분쟁, 영토 영유권 주장, 자원 분쟁 등에 대한 전 세계적인 뉴스 보도가 끊이지 않는 가운데, 국가의 국경 및 영토 문제는 상당한 중요한 과제로 등장하고 있다. 이 연구는 우즈베키스탄과 키르기스스탄의 복잡한 국경 분쟁에 대한 종합적 분석을 행하고, 이 국경 분쟁과 결부된 복잡한 정치적 양상을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이 연구는 중앙아시아의 역사 및 영토 분쟁으로 이어지는 일련의 사건 그리고 그 이면에 숨겨져 있는 지정학적 전략 등을 분석하고자 하였다. 우즈베키스탄과 키르기스스탄 그리고 타지키스탄의 국경지역에 위치한 페르가나 계곡(Fergana Valley)에서 오래 전부터 민족적 긴장이 발생해 왔다. 이 연구는 먼저 외교적 노력의 영향, 특히 1991년 중앙아시아(Central Asia) 포스트소비에트(Post-Soviet) 국가들 간의 우호협력조약(Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation)을 살펴보고자 하였다. 이러한 접근에서 공간적 사고가 국가 권력의 도구로서 어떻게 작동하는지를 탐구하며, 국가간의 관계 및 국가 정체성의 형성 등에 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 논의하고자 하였다. 본 연구는 우즈벡-키르기스 국경 분쟁의 역사적 그리고 민족적 갈등 그리고 지정학적 역동성에 대한 통찰력을 제공함으로써, 국경지역 문제에 대한 이해를 제고하고자 하였다. 최근 들어 페르가나 계곡의 접경지역에서의 일련의 분쟁, 특히 2021년 4월에 발생한 분쟁은 중앙아시아 지역의 민감한 국경 문제와 결부된 갈등 양상을 평가할 필요성을 강조하고 있다. 이 연구에서는 페르가나 계곡의 지속적인 지정학적 교차 문제를 인식하여 역사적 유산, 문화적 복잡성 그리고 지정학적 역동성의 복합적 상호 작용을 밝히고자 하였다. 따라서 이 연구는 주로 중앙아시아의 키르기스-우즈벡 국경 분쟁에 초점을 맞추고, 정치지리학의 보다 폭넓은 맥락에서 체계적인 연구를 추구하고자 하였다. 이 연구는 국경 문제에 관한 기존 연구들로부터 시작하여, 국경 분쟁이 어떤 결과를 가져오는지를 분석함으로써 중앙아시아의 지역 분쟁에 관한 통찰을 제공하고자 하였다. 본 연구는 개별 국가의 전략적 이해관계가 큰 영향을 미치는 지역 내의 영토 갈등의 복합성을 인식하고, 국경 분쟁에 있어 국내 정치의 영향도 강조하고자 하였다. 또한 이 연구는 외교정책 방향, 국가 정체성 형성, 지정학적 전략 간의 상호작용을 분석함으로써, 국경 분쟁을 추동하는 복잡한 연계 관계를 밝혀내고자 하였다. 이 논문은 정치지리학(Political Geography)의 접근방법, 국경 분쟁(border disputes)의 복잡한 양상 그리고 소프트파워(soft power)의 역할, 그리고 영토 분쟁 후 평화에 대한 전망 등을 고찰하는 내용으로 구성되어 있다. 전반적으로 이 논문은 우즈벡-키르기스 국경 분쟁의 양상과 그 영향을 깊이 있게 이해하고자 하였다. 그리고 이 논문은 정치지리학적 관점을 바탕으로 하여 지정학적 역동성, 영토 분쟁 해결, 지역안정 형성을 위한 소프트파워의 역할 등에 대한 설명을 제고하고자 하였다. This master’s thesis provides a comprehensive exploration of the Uzbek-Kyrgyz border conflict. The research utilizes a multi-layered approach that incorporates historical, geographical, and political perspectives to provide nuanced insights into the academic discourse on political geography. The study recognizes the interconnectedness of historical grievances, ethnic tensions, and geopolitical dynamics in Central Asia. Starting with an analysis of the impact of the conflict on regional stability, economic co-operation and diplomatic relations, the historical roots, and ethnic tensions in the Ferghana Valley are explored. The study uses a critical geopolitical framework to unravel the complex interplay of identity formation, domestic politics, and geopolitical maneuvering. The primary methodology involves a systematic analysis of media sources from Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, creating a comprehensive data set across various formats and time periods. Official statistical data complements this analysis and provides contextual information on demographics, economic indicators, and historical data. The application of content analysis to textual data facilitates the identification of recurring themes and key events. The quantitative analysis of statistical data complements the qualitative study and provides a holistic understanding of the Uzbek-Kyrgyz conflicts. The results emphasize the complex geopolitical realities of the Ferghana Valley and highlight the influence of historical narratives, cultural ties, and discursive constructs on the conflict. The integration of soft power theory and political geographic analysis advances the understanding of the power dynamics and discursive strategies of states and challenges traditional assumptions of political geography. This research makes an important contribution to the field by emphasizing the spatial implications of geopolitical strategies. The study suggests future research avenues and encourages exploration of the transnational and regional consequences, the role of international actors in dispute settlement and the wider implications for neighboring countries. Given the far- reaching consequences of border conflict, the study highlights the importance of understanding these complexities in order to promote sustainable peace. In line with critical political geography, this study deciphers the power dynamics underlying political realities and argues for diplomacy, dialogue, and cooperation in conflict resolution to achieve lasting stability.
