Dual enrollment courses allow students to earn college credit while they are still enrolled in high school. This arrangement is proving popular with schools, students, and parents, as once the students get into college, they tend to earn a higher first-year grade-point average and show a higher completion rate than do students who have not participated in dual enrollment. This education leadership portfolio (ELP) represents an evaluation of the methods by which Delaware Technical Community College prepares high school teachers to teach these courses.Embedded in the Delaware Tech approach to preparing high school teachers is a mentoring program, in which the high school teachers are assigned a mentor who is a full-time instructor at Delaware Tech. The research to support this ELP came from interviews with dual enrollment teachers in the Energy Pathways Program at Delaware Tech. At the outset of AY2016-17, I asked all dual enrollment teachers to complete a survey on their training and their relationship with their mentor. I also conducted document analysis on current Delaware Tech policies regarding dual enrollment and mentorship. My examination focused on how relationships are built between the mentor and dual enrollment teacher and how to continue that relationship through a professional learning community. My improvement goal was to strengthen resources available to mentors in the future and ensure consistency in training of dual enrollment teachers. Recommendations are posted on a website for all mentors to use. Resources created include a syllabus of topics to cover during training with dual enrollment teachers. Syllabus includes topics to go over with teacher that tend to be challenges, such as the gradebook function in the course management software. Additionally, the resources page also include some recommended reading for mentors to understand more about the mentor-mentee relationship.

Chemical genetics is the study of biology using small molecules, rather than mutations, to modulate cellular protein function. We developed a new general method to regulate protein function using a combination of synthetic organic chemistry and chemical genetic selection of receptor proteins. In addition, we extended existing methods to study signal transduction using small molecules that induce dimerization of proteins, particularly those that produce a gain-of-function phenotype. We developed a new method in solid-phase organic synthesis toward the production of libraries of small molecule dimerizers. We also developed assay methods designed specifically to discover novel small molecule dimerizers. With these advances, we achieved our goal of developing a general program to discover novel small molecule activators of protein function. Systematic chemical genetics aims to annotate every member of a compound collection with rich datasets delimiting its biological performance. We developed a platform to facilitate the delivery of compounds resulting from solid-phase, diversity-oriented synthesis into both phenotypic and proteomic assays. This one-bead, multiple stock-solution approach is central to a platform for discovery in chemical genetics.

Natural fiber reinforced thermoplastics are a rapidly growing, commercially interesting area. Unlike their glass reinforced counterparts, microstructure and dynamic fracture behavior of natural fiber reinforced thermoplastics have hardly been investigated. We characterized the microstructure of cellulose fiber reinforced polypropylene and determined its effect on dynamic fracture toughness. Scanning electron microscopy of the fracture surfaces and x-ray diffraction were used to investigate fiber orientation in injection molded composites. The polypropylene matrix was removed by solvent extraction, and the lengths of the residual fibers were optically determined. Fiber lengths were reduced by one-half when compounded in a high-intensity thermokinetic mixer and then injection molded. At low fiber contents, there was little fiber orientation; at high fiber contents, a layered structure arose exhibiting differing fiber orientations through the thickness of the injection molded specimen. Scanning electron microscopy of acid etched specimens revealed spherulitic structure emanating from cellulose fibers (i.e. transcrystallinity) in injection molded composites containing less than 5% fibers. The etching procedure failed to provide any matrix surface relief in high fiber content composites. To better understand fracture under impact loading, dynamic fracture analysis was performed based on linear elastic fracture mechanics. Dynamic critical energy release rates and dynamic critical stress intensity factors were deduced from instrumented Charpy impact test measurements. Dynamic fracture toughness increased with cellulose content and with orientation of fibers perpendicular to the crack plane. To better control composite microstructure, model laminates of highly aligned plies were produced and tested. Dynamic fracture toughness decreased with fiber alignment angle. A simple model successfully related the microstructure to the dynamic fracture toughness. Increasing test temperatures from –40 to +40° increased the dynamic critical energy release rate, but reduced the dynamic critical stress intensity factor and the dynamic modulus. At low temperatures and low fiber content, the matrix hardly yielded and the composite behaved as a linear elastic solid. At high fiber contents and high temperatures, load-deflection plots were slightly nonlinear, and scanning electron microscopy revealed some microductility.

Today the classroom is filled with students from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The reality of this cultural variance presents the educator with opportunities to teach from multiple perspectives. In developing the Hip Hop Initiative at North Carolina Central University I found that some educators (collegiate and pre-collegiate) have frowned upon and disavowed the notion of Hip Hop pedagogy. This study situates Hip Hop as an identifiable genre and culture within the African-American and Black musical tradition. My desire was to pursue a line of investigation, which presents plausible approaches to utilizing Hip Hop in a culturally responsive pedagogical framework. The purpose of this study was to examine Hip Hop in its historical and cultural contexts. Shor (1992) posits that teachers who acknowledge the culture of students as fertile ground for instruction must recognize that teachers must also be learners. This project chronicled Hip Hop through the eyes of the individuals who contributed to the creation and development of the art form as compared and contrast to its majoritarian view. The outcome(s) of this study was to produce a document that will serve as a historical source for teachers who wish to incorporate aspects of Hip Hop into their classroom environment.

Trailing edge (TE) noise due to the interaction between a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) and an airfoil trailing edge is a major source of airfoil self-noise. This broadband noise source generates sound from a few 100 Hz well into the KHz range (~ 15,000 Hz). Wind turbine blades and other subsonic airfoils generate significant TE noise. Improvements such as serrations added to the trailing edge have shown to decrease the far-field noise generated without compromising the aerodynamic performance. A number of aeroacoustic TE noise theories have long been used as the basis for noise-reduction mechanisms. It is well known that they over-predict noise generation and reduction. Serrated trailing edges with different geometries are also known to decrease noise in certain frequency ranges and increase noise in others. In light of these discrepancies, recent work has been focused on understanding the flow mechanisms that cause noise and, by extension, the mechanisms that reduce noise. In the present research, a NACA 0012 airfoil at a chord Reynold's number of ~850,000 and Mach number of 0.1 was chosen as a baseline configuration to study broadband noise generating flow mechanisms near the trailing edge. The results from the airfoil with a modified blunt trailing edge and 5° angle of attack were used as the baseline. Hot-wire anemometry with two traversing hot-wires were used as the main sensor for unsteady velocity measurements. Spanwise and streamwise correlations were obtained at different depths in the fully turbulent BL near the trailing edge of the baseline configuration to characterize flow structures. From these data, two regions having weak absolute and convective disturbances in the streamwise direction were isolated: the inner log region and the outer region respectively. Correlation and BL profile data near trailing edges of varied thicknesses were compared and it was found that a decrease in thickness and wake deficit near the trailing edge corresponded to an increase in the convective speed of flow structures in the inner region. Sharpness transitions an unsteady wake to an unsteady mixing layer. It has been experimentally proven by other studies that an increase in TE noise occurs with an increase in its thickness. This follows that the interaction of weak absolute disturbances in the inner region with the trailing edge could be a major mechanism of noise generation. Various serrated TE modifiers whose dimensions lambda and 2h (lambda is the width between two tips or roots and 2h is the length of a serration from root to tip) were scaled to the TBL thickness at the trailing edge of the baseline configuration were used as flow modifiers. The serrations formed a three dimensional flow structure with different convection speeds along the span. The effect of increasing the length of serrations was to transition the inner region of the turbulent boundary layer near the serration from weak absolute to convective disturbances and to decrease the spanwise correlation of flow structures near the tip. Results suggest that for a given serration width there exists a maximum length that corresponds to the greatest decrease in TE noise. This maximum length has been independently verified by other studies. It was also found that for a given large serration length there exists a minimum width that corresponds to an optimum convective speed of flow structures in the inner region near the serration. Evidence suggests that this width organizes the three dimensional flow structure most desirably to obtain the highest spanwise decay rate of flow-structures near the tip resulting in the maximum reduction of TE noise. Thus, the complex interaction of flow structures near the serration sheds light into the noise reduction mechanism of serrated trailing edges.

      • TRANSCENDING NATIONAL IDENTITY: FOREIGN EMPLOYEES AND ORGANIZATIONAL MANAGEMENT IN CORPORATE JAPAN

This work examines forms of social membership and exclusion in Japan's largest financial service firms. My findings are based on interviews, ethnographic observation, and survey data with Japanese managers, regular employees, and foreign white-collar co-workers. The study is distinguished from earlier works on foreigners in the corporation in that it draws from major social theories on identity construction (namely nation, race, and ethnicity) to explore the social and cultural consequences of melding of Japanese and foreign employees into an organization. In Chapter Two I show how notions of Japanese uniqueness structure a nationalization of division of labor in the firm based on management perceptions of the abilities and contributions of foreign employees. Chapter Three is a critique of nation and nationalism. I examine the theoretical and practical implications of nation, race, and ethnicity and argue that the ideal of a collective national identity in Japan is based on modern-day notions of a 'Japanese race.' I problematize the concept of race in Japan to critique nation, race, and ethnicity as malleable (at times competing and other times eliding) theoretical and practical constructs of identity formation that inform a Japanese sense of self. I show that race and ethnicity cannot be treated as tangential aspects of Japanese social consciousness that can be neatly dissected and separated from Japanese ideas about nation. Yet, scholars of Japanese organizations have not explored the concepts and their effects on organizational management and employee relations in the firm. In Chapter Four I contrast public concern over growing numbers of blue-collar migrant laborers with overwhelmingly positive support for the increasing number of white-collar foreigners in Japanese companies. Chapter Five shows how the 'firm as family' metaphor strengthens Japanese employees' commitment for inclusion in the national community. The final chapter considers larger socio-political, economic, and cultural effects of foreign professionals in the firm and Japanese society.

This study determined whether students' scores in math anxiety, perceived usefulness of mathematics, college placement test scores, and course satisfaction in elementary algebra during collaborative instruction would predict eligibility of students to take the Florida Basic Skills Exit Test. Of those students who were eligible, the study sought to ascertain if any combination of these variables would predict the Exit Test score. And finally, the study sought to answer the question of whether gender had a role in determining the outcome of the Exit Test. The study population consisted of 238 students at a Florida community college having CPT (College Placement Test) on record and who were enrolled for the first time in MAT 0024 during the spring 2001 semester. Based upon the grades assigned by each instructor, 182 students were eligible to take the Exit Test and 38 students were not. The two groups were identified as completers and noncompleters of MAT 0024 respectively. Eighteen other students participated in the study but had incomplete information. As a result, data for these students could not be used. Analysis of the data revealed that only CPT scores predicted Exit Test scores. It was further determined that the average CPT scores of completers of MAT 0024 were higher than those of noncompleters, but that course satisfaction levels for noncompleters were higher than those of completers. Possible reasons for higher levels of dissatisfaction with the course among completers were discussed.
