      • Determining eligibility for speech and language services: Factors influencing recommendations of Hispanic students

        The purpose of this study is to examine the influences of extraneous variables on the classification of Hispanic children as having linguistic disorders. Specifically, acculturation and IQ test data for Hispanic students referred for special education assessment were collected and analyzed to explore similarities and differences between students who were and were not recommended for speech and language intervention. Data gathered through a 1992 federally funded large scale study focusing on special education decisions was used because it contained a large random sample of Hispanic students in a large urban school system. This study was delimited to Hispanic students residing in the Bronx who were referred for special education assessment during the 1991--1992 school year. The study was also delimited to students who had IQ scores of 50 or higher. The following hypothesis was tested in this study: English proficiency, birth in the United States, years in United States, attendance at kindergarten, age at assessment, language use at home, and WISC-III verbal and performance scores will significantly discriminate between Hispanic students recommended for speech and language interventions from those who were not recommended. The hypothesis was tested using discriminant analysis on the predictor variables of English proficiency, birth in United States, years in United States, age at assessment, attendance at kindergarten, language use at home, WISC-III verbal and performance scores. The results showed that the only discriminating variable was the WISC-III verbal IQ. The predictor set accounted for 15% of the variance in discriminating between the two groups. This was significant (p < .05) and increased the ability to predict group assignments by 18.6% over random assignment (p < .01). The lack of significant findings suggests two alternatives: first, that the assessment of second language learners for language disorders is culture free, or second, that the variables used to assess acculturation were insufficient indicators. It is conceptually difficult to distinguish between acculturation and language learning because the learning of a second language is part of the acculturation process.

        This dissertation examines the development and maturation of an American Catholic tradition of social ethical thought, focused largely on economic issues, between 1900 and 1940. The dissertation considers in particular the thought of Rev. John A. Ryan, Professor of Moral Theology at the Catholic University of America and Director of the Social Action Department of the National Catholic Welfare Conference. During the early decades of the twentieth century, Ryan applied concepts from the papal social encyclicals Rerum Novarum (1891) and Quadragesimo Anno (1931) to issues in American economic life. The result was an influential body of ethical thought which transformed the intellectual and political orientation of the American Catholic Church. At the heart of Ryan's work was a push to harmonize the principles of Catholic social thought with the principles of American political liberalism. This commitment to harmonizing Catholicism and Americanism produced a social ethical tradition that prepared the American Catholic Church to more fully participate in the politics and public life of the nation. At the same time, it pulled American Catholic social thought away from its European roots and sparked the creation of a new and distinctive social ethical tradition. The liberal social ethic which Ryan promoted did not represent the only model of Catholic thinking about social justice and reform, but it proved the most enduring. Patterns of thought Ryan inaugurated continue to inform the public life of the American Catholic Church.

      • Males at midlife: A study of involuntary job loss and the orientation toward agency and communion

        Involuntary job loss as a result of organizational restucturing and downsizing is a continuing organizational strategy. The purpose of this exploratory, qualitative study was to investigate the impact that this type of job loss has had on midlife professional males, who occupy the positions most often affected when restructuring and downsizing occur. This study sought to answer the following research question: “How is the orientation toward agency versus communion amongst males manifested at midlife when the economic need to return to work is removed following involuntary job loss?” Data was collected by means of in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 11 participants. The interview methodology was based on The Life-Story Interview, developed by McAdams, which was modified and adapted to the specific purposes of this study. Interviews were transcribed and coded to identify themes of agency and communion using the coding system manual developed by McAdams, titled <italic> Coding Autobiographical Episodes for Themes of Agency and Communion</italic> (3rd rev., 1992). The results of the study demonstrate that the degree and timing of the shift from an agency to a communion orientation was facilitated when the economic need to work was removed following involuntary job loss. The results of this study suggest that organizations can more effectively utilize midlife professionals as an organizational resource during the generativity phase of the life cycle. The results also suggest the importance of coaching midlife persons around the psychosocial developmental needs of the midlife period.

      • Improving the Pronunciation of English Language Learners

        The dissertation explored the effectiveness of perceptual training with English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), for both the perception and production of three problematic vowel contrasts, /ae/-/ɛ/, /ɪ/-/ɛ/, /ɪ/-/i/. The methodology for the proposed study is based on that of Thorin et al. (2018), which conducted a perception experiment in a laboratory setting. The main goal of the dissertation was to provide a bridge between what has been successful in laboratory settings and what could realistically be offered in a more traditional classroom setting. The study compared three groups: Treatment 1 received a weekly 15-minute pronunciation lesson and a 10-minute perceptual training session for six weeks, Treatment 2 received a weekly 25-minute pronunciation lesson for six weeks, and the control group and did not receive any instruction. There were two main forms of assessment utilized throughout the study: identification tasks and recordings. The identification tasks assessed students’ ability to perceive different vowel sounds. The recordings were used to assess students’ gains in production. Praat, a computer software package for speech analysis, was used to obtain the formant measures of the pre- and post-test production data. The results showed that Treatment 1 led to the improvement and retention of participants’ perception of the three vowel contrasts. However, neither treatment group showed retained improvement in vowel production over the course of the semester. Therefore, it can be concluded that six weekly sessions of training focused on three vowel contrasts may facilitate long-term gains in perception, but not in production. Learners may require exposure to longer and more intense training sessions, which may not be possible to replicate in a typical classroom. Therefore, more research needs to be conducted to find treatment that is not only effective but could realistically be completed in a classroom.
