본 연구의 목적은 증산도의 사상적 배경과 발생경로를 추적하여 우리민족 사상의 뿌리가 되는 유, 불, 도, 동학의 수행법이 증산도 수행법에 미친 영향과 증산도 수행법이 일반 수행단체에서 행해지고 있는 修練과 어떤 차이점이 있는가를 조사함으로써 修行法의 바른 길을 제시하고자 하는데 있다. 본 연구를 위하여 증산도 도전을 중심으로 다양한 문헌을 고찰하였다. 또한 증산도에서 운영하는 인터서치를 자료로 활용하였다. 본 연구를 통하여 조사한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 증산도는 구한말 당시 사회질서 유지에 바탕이 되었던 유, 불, 도, 동학 등 거의 모든 사상을 바탕으로 이루어졌음이 확인되었다. 둘째, 증산도 수행법은 증산이 유, 불, 도, 동학의 限界를 창조적으로 수용하여 일상의 삶 속에서 누구나 쉽게 수행할 수 있는 보편 문화를 열기 위한 목적으로 유교에서는 修己治人을, 불교에서는 마음 닦는 心法을, 도교에서는 不老長生하는 방법을, 동학에서는 侍天主 수행법을 종합 통일하여 만들었음이 확인되었다. 셋째, 일반 기존 수행단체의 수행목적은 개인의 건강증진과 심신을 단련한다는 범주를 벗어나지 못하는 반면 증산도의 수행법은 증산이 인류구원이라는 목표를 달성하기 위하여 神人合發을 바탕으로 해서 만든 수행법임이 확인되었다. 인류구원을 실현하기 위하여 만든 증산도의 수행법이 기존의 수행법과 차별되는 점은 우주의 큰 聖靈들과 聖神들을 직접 체험하기 위한 神道修行이라는 점과 宇宙創造原理에 바탕을 두고 만들어진 呪文修行이라는 점에 있었다. 소리내어 공부하는 주문수행을 통한 神人合發의 인간관을 제시한 점도 기존수행단체의 수행법과 차별화 되었다. The goal of this study is to find the best way of the meditation by analyzing the effects of meditation methods of those thoughts underlying our national thoughts or Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism and Tonghak on that of Jeung San Do and the differences in meditation method between Jeung San Do and the other meditation groups. The conclusions derived from the study mentioned above are as follows: First, it was confirmed that the meditation method of Jeung San Do was established based on almost all of those thoughts that supported the social order of the last period of Cho-Sun dynasty. In other words, the meditation method of Jeung San Do was formed by extractingsu-ki-chi-in or ruling over people after cultivating oneself, sim-beop, or the way to clean the mind, bul-ro-chang-saeng-beop or the way not to age and not to die, si-chun-ju-su-haeng-beop or the way to worship deity from Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, and Tonghak, respectively and synthesizing them. Second, it was found out that Jeung San formulated the meditation method to create the universal culture by improving the weak points of Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism and Tonghak and synthesizing them. Third, on one hand, the meditation method of Jeung San Do pursues physical health and mental advancement, as do those methods of the other meditations, on the other hand, it has noticeable differences. The first difference is that it is a Holy Spirit based meditation method to try to perceive, in person, the Holy Spirits of the universe. The second difference is that it is a meditation method to perform mantra based on the principle of genesis. In addition to those, it can be said that it is different from the other existing meditation methods in presenting the performance of mantra as the way to common development of deity and the human beings.
