감정의 복원으로 해석하는 공주 캐릭터의 변주 : 디즈니 애니메이션을 중심으로

본 논고에서는 2000년대 이전의 변주된 디즈니 공주 캐릭터를 주목한다. 디즈니 애니메이션에 주인공으로 등장하는 공주 캐릭터는 1930년대부터 1950년대까지 왕자에게 구원받고 그와 결혼해 행복한 삶을 살게 되는 전통적인 공주 캐릭터에서 1980년부터 1990년대까지 자신의 지적 욕구와 모험심을 세상에 펼치며 사는 새로운 공주 캐릭터로 변주되었다. 본 연구는 현대 사회에 맞춰 변주되는 공주 캐릭터를 철학적 관점을 통해 분석한다. 이를 위해 바뤼흐 스피노자(baruch de spinoza)가 주장하는 감성론을 빌려와 공주 캐릭터의 정서 변화 양상을 고찰한다. 그가 정의한 인간의 3가지 원시적 정서인 욕망, 기쁨, 슬픔을 포함한 48가지 감정은 양상을 고찰하는 데에 핵심적인 요소이다. 정서적으로 억압되어있던 공주를 그린 애니메이션 <백설 공주와 일곱 난장이>, <신데렐라>, <잠자는 숲속의 공주>를 선정해 분석하고 <인어공주>, <미녀와 야수>, <알라딘>을 앞의 애니메이션과 비교, 대조한다. 이러한 시도를 통해 사회적, 정치적, 문화적 관점에서 연구되었던 공주 캐릭터의 감정의 변화를 알아볼 수 있다. 초창기의 공주 캐릭터는 결핍된 감정으로 일그러진 여성상을 보여줬음으로 이를 비판한다. 시대의 흐름에 따라 자주적이고 야망을 가진 공주 캐릭터가 등장하여 다양한 감정을 표현함으로써 정서의 범위가 넓어지고 캐릭터 스스로가 자신의 감정에 깊이 들어갈 수 있는 기회가 되었다. 이 연구는 디즈니 공주 캐릭터가 역사적으로 어떻게 변주되어 왔는지에 대하여 분석하였다. This paper notes the variations of Disney princess characters prior to the 2000s. Disney princesses underwent variations from traditional characters in the 1930-50s of being saved by a prince and attaining a happily ever afterlife to their more progressive forms in the 1980-90s who fulfilled their intellectual needs and adventurous spirit. This study analyzed princess characters who adapted to modern society from a philosophical point of view. We employed Spinoza’s (1677) affect theory to examine the emotional changes of the princess characters. Forty-eight human emotions defined by Spinoza, including the three primitive ones – desire, joy, and sadness – were key factors in the analyses. The analyses involved comparing the earlier Disney princesses from animations “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, “Cinderella”, and “Sleeping Beauty” with the later characters from “The Little Mermaid”, “Beauty and the Beast”, and “Aladdin”. These attempts will help examine the emotional changes of the princess characters that have been studied from a social, political, and cultural point of view. This thesis criticizes that the early princess characters had shown distorted images of women with a lack of emotion. This study analyses how Disney princess characters have been transformed through history according to the flow of time. The princess character with independence and ambition appears and sincerely expresses her own various emotions. Then, the range of character’s sentiments has expanded, and the character could go deep into her own emotions.
