In this study, an attempt was made to develop the automated survey system of joints in rock slopes. The system includes the still-photography system for the analysis of geometric characteristics of joints and real-time video system for the general observation of rock slopes where measurements of joints are made. The cameras for the automated survey system are installed on the roof of the vehicle specially designed for this work. Still photographs are taken using 2 DSLR cameras that were set up for parallel photography. A CCD camera with SD level resolution was used for video recording. These cameras installed on a PTZ (pan, tilt and zoom) system to control the direction of photography. The PTZ system was designed so that adjustment of height and rotation are possible by the operator in the survey vehicle. An integrated software was also developed for image processing and analysis. For verification, we compared the results obtained from this system with those obtained manually. It was found that the two results are identical within measurement error. This system may be used for rock slopes where the conventional manual measurements of joints are impossible. Furthermore, the system will lead to rapid monitoring of rock slopes when the acquired data can be transmitted wirelessly to the control center.
