필자가 10년 전(1994년 10월)에 부임하였던 신동교회는 급속한 서울 강남 권의 개발로 인해서 주변 상황에 엄청난 변화를 가져왔다. 그러나 교회는 그 변화에 적절한 대응을 하지 못했고 침체된 상태로 옛날 서울시로 편입되기 전 개척 당시 교회 모습 그대로 40년 동안 지나오고 있었다. 이에 교회 침체의 문제를 새로 이주해 온 교인들과 오래된 교인들과의 연합의 문제에 있다고 진단하였다. 온 교인들이 함께 참여하여 건강하고 작은 교회로써 교제 공동체인 구역공동체를 어떻게 활성화 할 것인가? 에 깊은 관심을 가졌다. 우선 이 문제를 극복하기 위해서 교회의 본질에 대하여 전체 교인들에게 분명히 설명하고 위원회를 구성하여 이 위원회로 하여금 교회의 비 활성화의 문제와 타개책들을 연구 제안토록 하였다. 위원회가 제안한 문제와 타개책이 목회자가 진단하고 생각했던 것과 다르지 아니하여 구체적인 타개책을 실행에 옮기게 되었다. 위원회는 먼저 구역 조직을 연령, 교육정도, 문화수준, 영적 상태, 회집 시간 등을 고려하여 특성화된 구역 조직 즉, 그루터기라는 조직으로 변경하고 그루터기 목회를 시도하였다. 그루터기라는 특성화 구역 조직의 비전(Vision)을 "성장과 돌봄"이라고 결정하였다.그루터기란 나무를 베고난 밑둥을 말한다. 그러나 그 그루터기는 죽은 나무가 아니라 새로운 생명을 잉태하고 새순을 내어 자라게 되는 것이다. 이런 의미를 담아 27개의 그루터기를 조직하고 지도자 훈련과 그루터기 조직의 역할을 교육해 나갔다. 교재를 주일 예배의 설교를 재구성하여 말씀을 나누고 기도와 교제를 나눔으로 그루터기 예배를 하게 하였다. 무엇보다도 목회자의 신학적 기초가 중요하다는 사실을 이해하고 교회가 무엇인가 ?, 실천하고자 하는 그루터기 목회의 계획들이 성서적이고 신학적이며 문화적 상황 속에서 정당하고 효과적인 것인가 ?를 연구하고 그 기초를 분명히 하였다. 교회사적으로도 소그룹 활동은 교회활성화에 매우 중요한 역할을 해왔던 것을 확인 할 수 있었다. 그리고 현대 사회 속에서 교인들이 느끼는 소속감과 가치 추구의 욕구를 충족시키기 위해서 그 욕구에 맞는 소그룹 공동체가 필요하다는 사실 또한 인식할 수 있었다.그루터기 목회가 이러한 사실들을 충족시킬 수 있는 가능성을 발견하고 그 이론적 틀 위에 실천되었다. 실천의 단계에서는 큰 어려움이 없었음을 감사하게 생각한다. 비전을 세우는 과정이나 규범화하는 과정에서 세밀한 관심을 두지 아니하면 예기치 않는 문제들이 발생할 수 있다는 사실도 배우게 되었다. 무엇보다도 다원화되고 개인주의 적인 사회 속에서 교회도 그 동질성의 가치와 문화경험을 공유하게 하는 조직이 필요하다는 사실이 가장 큰 배우점이라 할 수 있다. 신·구의 갈등과 일부 소외 그룹의 발생, 변화에 대한 부정적 시각 등이 예측되는 문제로 인식되었다. 이는 여러 차례의 설교와 세미나를 통해서 갈등 없이 극복되어졌다. 작은 교회로써 기쁨과 은혜가 넘치고 생동감 있게 활성화하는 유기체로써 그루터기 목회는 그 이상적 상황을 잘 이루어 가고 있다. 이 구역조직의 특성화로 인해서 모든 교인들과 위원회는 교회가 활성화되어 가고 있는 것에 매우 긍정적인 평가를 하고 있다. 년도 대비 약 30% 정도의 구역 모임이 외형적 성장을 가져왔고 내적으로도 기쁨과 평화가 있게 진행되어 가고 있다. Since I came to Shindong Church ten years ago (October 1994), its surrounding environment has drastically changed due to rapid development of Gangnam area. But the church have not responded to these rapid and drastic changes in an appropriate way, and it still has the image of the old church 40 years ago when its location had yet to be incorporated into Seoul. Stagnation in growth of the church was judged to be attributed to problems in cooperations between new church members and existing ones. In this regard, it was necessary to figure out how to activate the district community that is the communion community as a small wholesome church in which each and every church member participates. In order to resolve the problems, what the church truly means was clearly explained to the entire church members, and a committee was established in an effort to come up with measures to activate the church. Since the committee suggested the same solutions and countermeasure as those put forward by the minister, they have been implemented. The committee converted district organizations into Gruteogi (which means stump in Korean), a specialized district organization, in consideration of age, academic background, cultural background, spirituality and time of congregation in an effort to activate the church in the name of Gruteogi Ministry. The Gruteogi, the specialized organization, designated "Growth and Care" as its vision. 27 Gruteogi organizations were established, and roles of the Gruteogi were educated along with leader training. Sermon of the week became teaching materials, and Gruteogi services were held based on prayers and communion. Most of all, it was focused on defining true meaning of church, examining whether what the Gruteogi ministry is trying to achieve is biblical, theological, justifiable and effective in terms of culture and clarifying its foundation based on understanding that theological foundation of cleric is important. The Gruteogi ministry has been implemented based on theoretical framework because it was judged that it could meet the desire as a specialized district organization. It is fortunate that any serious problems occurred while it was implemented. It was also found that unexpected problems could occur without caution in the process of establishing vision and standard. And most of all, it was found that church needed organizations that make it possible to share value of homogeneity and cultural experiences in diversified and individualistic society. All church members and committee members judged that the Gruteogi ministry had a positive effect on activation of the church. District gatherings have increased about 30 percent from last year, and the church became filled with more pleasure and peace.
