전시컨벤션산업은 고부가가치 서비스산업으로서 고용을 창출하고, 지역 경제를 활성화시키며, 외화획득과 세수증대를 가져올 뿐만 아니라, 개최지역의 국제적 인지도 향상과, 이미지를 개선시켜 해당 지역의 발전에 순기능 역할을 한다. 수출 진흥 및 연계산업으로의 파급효과가 큰 전시컨벤션산업은 독일을 비롯한 전시컨벤션 선진국뿐만 아니라 가까운 싱가포르와 중국 등에서도 국가 전략산업으로 인식하고 있다. 우리나라 또한 중앙정부에서 전시컨벤션산업을 ‘국가 신성장 동력산업’으로 지정하여 전시컨벤션산업 활성화를 위한 지속적인 지원책을 시행 중에 있으며, 서울특별시를 비롯한 지방정부 역시 지역의 시설인프라 확충 등의 다각적인 노력을 기울이고 있다. 최근의 전시컨벤션산업은 단순히 국제회의 개최를 넘어서 각종 전시회, 스포츠행사, 문화예술행사, 인센티브 관광과 함께 다양한 형태로 개최되고 있는 추세이기에 그 부가가치는 더욱 높아지고 있다. 이에 따라 미국, 유럽 등 선진국은 물론 일본, 싱가포르, 홍콩 등 아시아 국가에서도 관련법을 정비하고 경비보조, 세금감면 등의 각종 지원책을 수립하여 성공적인 전시컨벤션 유치 및 개최 전략을 세우고 있으며, 전시컨벤션을 유치하기 위한 세계 각국 개최지들의 경쟁은 날로 심화되어 오고 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 이러한 환경속에서의 전시컨벤션산업의 실질 통계 및 이론적 고찰을 토대로 서울 전시컨벤션산업의 현황과 문제점을 분석하고, 국내외 전시컨벤션산업의 특성과 경쟁구조 변화에 맞는 육성전략의 추진 방향을 모색하였다. 또한, 이를 통해 서울의 전시컨벤션산업이 보다 원활히 전시컨벤션 행사를 유치․개최할 수 있도록 전시컨벤션산업의 경쟁력 제고를 위한 서울형 전시컨벤션산업 활성화 방안을 수립하였다. Exhibition and convention industry boosts the local economy development with creating jobs, activating local economies, earning foreign currency and increasing tax revenues, and helps move on to the higher valueadded business. Exhibition and convention industry is considered as national strategy industry in Germany including developed countries as well as near the Singapore and Chinese, because of great ripple effect to promoting exports and increasing related industries. The Government of Korea designated exhibition and convention industry as a national neo growth powered industry, and decided to offer government support. Seoul Metropolitan Government and local governments make effort to expand exhibition and convention facilities. Recently, Exhibition and convention industry is becoming a more higher valueadded business and has expanded influence to exhibitions, sports event, cultureart event, incentive tour and etc. America and Europe including developed Asian countries, Japanese, Singapore and Hongkong, modify various laws and ease regulations to help expense and tax cut. They have various support systems and held strategies for hosting successful exhibition & convention, but competition between countries and cities is getting fierce. This study indicated that analysis of status and problem of Seoul exhibition & convention industry based on the real statistics and theoretical approach, and have strategies and guidelines to intensively foster industrial strategic to adapt to change of characteristic and competition structure of domestic and foreign exhibition & convention industry. Thus, this wellestablished plan of activities for Seoul exhibition & convention industry will enable to achieve competitiveness to host and held exhibition and convention smoothly in Seoul.
