This dissertation aims at investigating Suh, Jung-ju's unique aesthetic principles or poetic features underlying his poetry in terms of analyzing both eternal and internal structures of his poetic works. Over the last sixty years of literary career, Suh has almost produced one thousand pieces of poetry. We find that his poetic works, although they have been apparently undergoing a great deal of change throughout the long journey from A Floral Snake (1941) to Songs of an Old Vagabond (1993), still carry some essential literary characteristics. Suh uniquely forms his own poetic world which he dissolved Korea's language, thoughts, history, traditional culture in poetry. This dissertation is widely divided with the two characteristics of poetical diction and spirit. In chapter two, we try to examine the poetical diction and rhyme of Meedan(Suh's pen name), the matter of rhythm and the consciousness of vernacularism. First, poetry is a work to appear an identity of things by using a imperfect language and to overcome the limitation of language by connecting the words with an unique method. An unique method can be explained as a deviation about his/her daily use of language. Therefore, poetry is a ungrammatical language with comprehensive features. Suh's unique poetical diction is a characteristics of usage, onomatopoeic and imitative word peculiar to Korea, the readers can feel the exquisite flavor of reading his poem. Based on this contents this dissertation observes the aspect to be appeared his poetic genius through the ungrammarticality. Second, poetry is basically a paradoxical language. It is said that poetry is the result of contradictional efforts. This contradiction of language is the most characteristic which a poetical word can have. Suh, Jung-ju used a lot of contradictional phases in his poems over the range of simple phraseology. But his distinctive quality is not only to destruct an usual grammar but also not to become a problem and to create the new aesthetic structure. Third, a rhythrn is one of the important characteristic which a poetry has and a core element to distinguish it from other literature. Suh's poetry is divided to two kinds of it with a remarkable muscality and prose quality. Fourth, Suh's poems have lots of national image. Also, we can read a affirmative posture and a philosophical view of life including a implication about tragic fortune and agony. he says that a deliverance of his soul don't incapacitate healthful will of life, but makes it refine as a more concrete foresight of human. It is similar to the tone of the voice that the older man of family who went through many hardships gives a tap on the shoulder and comforts the injured heart when we are deeply depressed. Fifth, it is important that we pursuit the poetic words' temperance and combination which can give a shock to a fresh impact as we think of deciphering language these days. We can give a sense to observe Suh's poetry that he tried to reappear a national hometown with primary color in his poetry because we can review a subjective emotion peculiar to our nation through his dialects and traditional languages and have a opportunity to consider a power of life of poetic language. Chapter three, on the basis of chapter two, investigates the characteristics of his poetic spirit from the viewpoint of traditional Korean poetics. First, most of Suh's important works is based on a traditional narrative. A routine of his works such as Guichokdo, The Collection of Suh Jong-ju's Poem, Shillacho, Dongchon and Jilmajae Myth is worth of calling the process of growing up. The concept of myth is inclusive to him because most of his poems is on the high level over the logical and rational world. It is not a real world, but a worthy world. Accordingly, we can find the traditional characteristics on the fields of oral folklore, novel of Buddhist, Pansori, contents related to folkways and so on, including Samguk-usa, Samguk-sagi, Suijen. Second, a spirit of Shilla which is the synthetic thinking not dividing intelligence and sensitivity is the first characteristic. The next one is to feel a god, heaven and soul without sense and perception. The third is a self-consciousness about an eternal man. It is called "Yongtong" that the dead's meaning and will become a spirit and communicate with a person of future. This spirit of Shilla combines with a model of universe to become Suh Jung-ju's viewpoint of Buddhist and consists of the most considerable symbolic system. Third, a wind in his poems is a image and a motive. It is connected to consciousness of wandering. A living is the continuing itinerary of wandering to him. Existence is recognized to him as a wanderer to receive his fortune that he continuously wander in living space. Therefore, 'wandering consciousness' is located in the center of his viewpoint of world as the result of self-consciousness. Fourth, wandering consciousness has the more concrete feature by linking of 'Pungryu', Korea's tradition idea. In the old times of Korea, Pungryu is a kind of natural philosophy, ideology, not a sensitive nostalgia for the world. Like Nanrang-biso, it is to receive a supernatural power and to teach people through the combination with it. Pungryu has a image of eternity. That Sun Jung-ju receives Pungryu as his important aesthetic is because he think that Pungryu just is not
