고전이란 무엇인가? 일반적 의미에서 고전은 오래된 책이지만 여전히 ‘살아있다는 것’으로, 현대를 사는 우리들에게 삶의 의미 뿐만 아니라 ‘지금’, ‘여기’의 사회와 세계를 이해하는데 한줄기 빛을 던져주는 책이다. 또한 고전은 인류 지성사의 보고이자 연구가치가 있는 책이기도 하다. 그러나 ‘한 시대를 변화시키고 한 사회를 도약하게 하며 지적 기반을 견고하게 하는 상당한 토대’를 또한 고전이라 한다면, 출간되자마자 당대 학문계의 저명한 학자들의 다양한 논평을 이끌어내고 그들의 후속 연구에도 지대한 영향을 미친 마르크 블로크의 봉건사회는 충분히 현대 역사학의 고전으로 불릴 만하다. 봉건사회는 20세기 유럽의 대표적인 역사가인 블로크가 시대와 장소를 초월해 위대한 역사가였음을 증명해 준다. 봉건사회는 출간되자마자 역사학자와 사회과학자들 사이에서 대단히 다양한 반응을 낳았고, 이는 오늘날에도 마찬가지이다. 이러한 점에서 봉건사회는 현대 역사학의 고전이라 할 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 기존의 연구를 바탕으로 마르크 블로크의 역사관이 가장 잘 반영된 저서이자 “행동하는 실천적 지식인”으로서의 그의 명성을 부동의 것으로 만든 현대의 영원한 고전 봉건사회를 교양대중의 시각에서 다시 읽어보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 우선 1세대에서 4세대에 이르는 아날학파의 역사세계를 살펴보았고 그 토대위에서 아날의 공동창시자이자 1세대였던 블로크의 역사세계를 고찰하였다. 아울러 마르크 블로크의 역사관의 집합체이자 그의 명성을 부동의 것으로 굳히는데 기여했던 우리 시대의 영원한 고전 봉건사회의 서술 및 서지적 배경을 살펴보았다. 나아가 ‘사회환경’과 ‘당시 정신상태와 관련한 농민층의 종속’을 중심으로 봉건사회의 내용을 분석한 다음 봉건사회 출판 이후 나타났던 현대 역사학계의 다양한 반응들을 살펴보았다. 20세기 역사학의 흐름에 있어 획기적인 한 장을 장식했던 아날학파의 창시자, 제2차 세계대전 당시 50이 넘은 나이임에도 자원입대해 레지스탕스 활동을 하다 사망한 실천적 지식인, 바로 이러한 마르크 블로크의 명성은 오늘날 역사를 전공하는 이들의 강의실에서 뿐만 아니라 일반 대중에게도 더 이상 생소한 것이 아니다. 1886년-1944년이라는 역사의 격동기를 살아가며 역사는 인간을 위한 것이고 역사를 쓰는 것은 현재의 인간을 위한 것임을 보여주었던 그의 모습을 기억하며 그의 삶과 학문에 매료된 이 시대의 많은 대중 독자들이 역사학의 길로 들어서기도 하고 역사학에 지대한 관심을 표하기도 하는 것이 오늘날의 사실임을 떠 올린다면 블로크의 봉건사회는 충분히 현대 역사학의 고전으로 자리매김되어 있다고 할 것이다. What is a classic? In a general sense, a classic is an old book, but it is still ‘living’. It is a book that throws a ray of light in understanding the society and world of ‘now’ and ‘here’ as well as the meaning of life for us living in the modern age. Classics are also a treasure trove of human intellectual history and a book worth researching. However, if ‘a significant foundation that changes an era, makes a leap in a society, and solidifies an intellectual foundation’ is also a classic, it drew various comments from prominent scholars in the contemporary academic circles as soon as it was published and had a profound influence on their subsequent research. Marc Bloch's ‘La société féodal’ deserves to be called a classic of modern history. ‘La société féodal’ proves that Blok, a representative European historian in the 20th century, was a great historian, transcending time and place. As soon as ‘La société féodal’ was published, it provoked a wide variety of reactions among historians and social scientists, and it is still the case today. In this respect, ‘La société féodal’' can be said to be a classic of modern history. In this thesis, based on the existing research, I would like to re-read the modern classic 〈La société féodal’〉, a book that best reflects Marc Bloch's view of history and that made his reputation as a "practical intellectual in action" immovable from the perspective of the educated public. To this end, the historical world of the Anal School from the 1st to the 4th generation was examined first, and on that basis, the historical world of Block, the co-founder of Anal and the 1st generation, was examined. In addition, the narrative and bibliographic background of Marc Blok's historical view and the eternal classic of our time, which contributed to solidifying his reputation as immovable, were examined. Furthermore, after analyzing the contents of 'Feudal Society', focusing on 'social environment' and 'subordination of the peasant class in relation to the mental state of the time', various reactions of modern historical academia after the publication of ‘La société féodal’' were examined. The founder of the Anal School, which marked a landmark in the history of the 20th century, and a practical intellectual who died while volunteering for the resistance activities during World War II despite being over 50, Marc Blok's fame is today's history. It is no longer unfamiliar to the general public as well as to the classrooms of those majoring in computer science. Living in the turbulent period of history from 1886 to 1944, remembering that he showed that history is for humans and writing history is for humans today, many popular readers of this era, fascinated by his life and studies, If we recall that today's fact that some people have entered the road and expressed great interest in history studies, Blok's ‘La sociétéféodal’ is sufficiently established as a classic of modern history.
