관광이 지역 경제, 사회, 문화, 환경에 미치는 영향을 이해하는 것은 관광관리에서 매우 중요하다. 이는 지속 가능한 관리를 가능하게 하며, 부정적인 결과를 완화하고 긍정적인 기여를 극대화하여 경제 성장과 지역적 요구 간의 장기적인 조화의 균형을 맞추는 데 기여한다. 이 연구는 사회 교환이론(SET)을 근거로 네팔의 대표적 종교 관광지인 룸비니 지역을 대상으로 관광의 영향에 대한 주민들의 인식과 관광 개발에 대한 지역 주민들의 지지를 분석하는 것을 목표로 하고 있다. 네팔은 국내외 관광객이 크게 증가하고 있지만, 지역 주민들이 관광의 영향을 어떻게 인식하고 있는지, 관광 개발에 대한 지지는 어떠한지 등에 대한 정보는 거의 없는 실정이다. 본 연구는 관광이 지역 주민들에게 미치는 사회적, 문화적, 환경적, 경제적 영향을 파악하고자 하였으며, 긍정적 영향과 아울러 부정적 영향에 대한 인식을 동시에 고려하였다. 연구 목적을 달성하기 위해 연구 가설을 제시하였으며, 실증연구를 위해 온라인 설문조사를 통해 230명의 응답자로부터 데이터를 수집하였다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS를 사용하여 분석하였으며, 측정 척도의 타당성과 신뢰도를 평가하고 가설을 검증하기 위해 탐색적 요인 분석(EFA)과 회귀 분석이 적용되었다. 자료의 분석 결과 관광이 미치는 사회, 문화, 환경, 경제적인 측면의 긍정적 영향과 관광 개발 지지 의사 사이에는 유의미한 관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 긍정적인 사회적 영향에 대한 인식이 관광개발에 대한 지지에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 다음으로 문화적, 환경적, 경제적 요인의 순으로 나타났다. 관광으로 인한 사회적 편익이 지역사회 전반에 걸쳐 가시화될 때 주민들은 관광 개발을 지지할 가능성이 더 높음을 알 수 있다. 부정적인 영향에 대한 인식의 경우, 사회, 경제, 문화 영역에서 부정적인 영향은 관광 개발에 대한 지지에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 환경적 측면의 부정적 영향에 대한 인식은 기대와는 달리 관광 개발에 대한 지지에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 특히 저개발 지역에서 주민들이 인식하는 관광으로 인한 단기적인 경제적 혜택이 환경 비용보다 크게 인식되고, 관광의 환경에 대한 부정적인 영향을 훼손보다는 개발이라는 측면으로 바라볼 수 있다는 측면에서 이해될 수 있다. 이 연구의 결과는 관광 정책 입안자와 관리자가 관광개발에 있어 관광에 대한 지역주민의 긍정적 및 부정적인 영향을 포함하는 다양한 의견을 고려해야 함을 시사하고 있다. Research on the impacts of tourism is crucial to understand its effects on local economies, society, cultures, and environments. It helps shape sustainable practices, mitigate negative consequences, maximize positive contributions, and balance economic growth and long-term harmony between tourism development and local needs. Influenced by the principles of social exchange theory (SET), this study aims to analyze residents' perceptions of the impact of tourism and local residents' support for tourism development in a religious destination targeting Lumbini, Nepal. Although there is a tremendous increase in domestic and international tourists, very little information is available regarding how local residents perceive tourism impacts and their support for tourism development in the region. This study emphasizes the social, cultural, environmental and economic with both positive and negative impacts of tourism to the local residents. To meet the study goals, eight research hypotheses were proposed, and data was collected from 230 respondents through online surveys. Results were analyzed by using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and regression analysis were applied to assess the validity and reliability of measurement scales and to test the hypotheses. The results indicate a significant relationship between perceived positive impacts such as social, cultural, environmental and economic with support for tourism development. Notably, positive social impact demonstrates the most substantial positive influence, followed closely by cultural, environmental, and economic factors. Residents are more likely to support tourism development when tourism's social benefits are visible across the community. Additionally, negative impacts, particularly in the social, economic, and cultural domains, inversely influence the support for tourism development. Surprisingly, the results reveal an unexpected positive relation between environmental negative impact and support for tourism development. The underlying reason behind this is that the residents believe that the immediate benefits of economic growth could help fix any environmental issues that overshadow the concerns about environmental costs. This study provides valuable insights for researchers and policymakers to include different stakeholders in future tourism development.
