하비 메이슨의 세트 드럼 연주 표현기법 연구 : 포플레이 앨범을 중심으로
대중음악에서 세트 드럼은 훵크(Funk), 록(Rock) 스타일의 8, 16비트 리듬을 주로 연주된다. 하비 메이슨은 퓨전 재즈 밴드 포플레이의 음악을 통해 단순하게 느낄 수 있는 리듬에 사이드 스네어 드럼과 풋 하이햇을 사용함으로써 백 비트의 음색을 변화시키고 보다 풍성한 밴드 사운드를 표현한다. 본 논문의 목적은 포플레이의 앨범 중 사이드 스네어 드럼과 풋 하이햇이 활용된 10곡을 분석하여 활용된 방법을 알아보고 브루노 마스(Bruno Mars)의 곡에 적용하여 백 비트의 음색을 변화시켰을 때 나타나는 음악적 효과를 알아보는 것이다. 메이슨의 연주 표현기법은 사이드 스네어 드럼의 활용과 풋 하이햇의 활용으로 두 가지로 분류하며, 각 기법마다 세부적인 연주 방법과 특징들을 도출했다. 도출된 기법의 음악적 효과를 알아보기 위해 포플레이의 곡에 적용 및 재해석을 하고 리듬의 관점에서 음악적 환경이 유사한 브루노 마스의 곡에 적용하며, 자작곡에 모두 적용했다. 본 논문은 메이슨의 연주 표현기법을 분석하여 세트 드럼에서의 음색 표현 방법을 기술했다. 메이슨은 곡의 장르와 스타일에 어울리는 연주 방법을 연구하고 자신의 드럼 연주에서 보여주었다. 본 연구를 통해 드럼의 테크닉 뿐만 아니라 물리적으로 다른 색깔을 나타내는 표현기법도 연구의 가치가 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 주제어 : 사이드 스네어 드럼, 백 비트, 음색 표현 In popular music, set drum performance is mostly based on 8- and 16-beat rhythms of funk and rock styles. Harvey Mason transforms the timbre of back beat and expresses richer sounds by using side snare drum and foot hi-hat for rhythms, which may sound simple, in the music of Fourplay, a fusion jazz band. This study aims to analyze how side snare drum and foot hi-hat are used in 10 songs of Fourplay and consider the musical effect when the timbre of back beat is transformed, by applying the performance techniques to Bruno Mars’ song. This study targeted side snare drum and foot hi-hat of Mason’s performance expression techniques and extracted detailed performance methods and characteristics of individual techniques. In order to see the musical effect of the performance techniques, the techniques were applied to Fourplay’s songs and they were reinterpreted. Also, from a rhythmic perspective, the performance techniques were applied to Bruno Mars’ song with similar musical settings and the researcher’s own song. This study describes timbre expression methods of a set drum by analyzing Mason’s performance expression techniques. Mason has researched performance methods, which suit the genres and styles of his music and shown them through his drum performances.
