Chet Baker의 즉흥연주기법 연구 : <It Could Happen To You>앨범의 보컬 및 트럼펫 즉흥연주를 중심으로
즉흥연주는 재즈 음악을 다른 음악과 구분하여 주는 상징적이고 대표적인 음악적 요소로써 재즈 음악의 성장과 함께 비약적인 발전을 이루게 되었다. 개개인의 역량과 음악적 스타일을 구축하기 위하여 많은 재즈 음악인들이 여러 가지 접근 방식으로 즉흥연주를 해석하고 시도하였으며 그 중 어떤 재즈 보컬리스트들은 그들의 즉흥연주에 관악기의 연주 기법을 도입하기도 하였다. 이에 논자는 보컬리스트이자 트럼펫 연주자인 쳇 베이커를 연구 대상으로 삼고 그의 보컬 및 트럼펫 즉흥연주를 분석함으로써 이 둘의 상관관계와 그의 연주 특징을 도출하고자 하였다. 쳇 베이커는 ‘트럼펫을 연주하듯 노래하며, 노래를 부르듯 트럼펫을 연주하였다’라는 평을 들으며 평론가의 인정과 대중의 사랑을 받은 음악인으로 70개의 보컬 앨범을 포함 총 194개의 앨범을 발매하였다. 그 중 1958년 발매된 그의 보컬 앨범 <It Could Happen To You>는 그의 보컬리스트로써의 역량이 단연 최고조일 때 녹음되어진 작품으로 평가되어지며 또한 그의 보컬 즉흥연주와 트럼펫 즉흥연주를 함께 들을 수 있다는 점에서 쳇 베이커가 같은 시기, 같은 상황에서 연주한 보컬 및 트럼펫 즉흥연주를 연구할 수 있다는 점에서 좋은 연구 대상이 되었다. 이 앨범에 수록된 12개의 곡 중 보컬 즉흥연주 4곡, 트럼펫 즉흥연주 4곡의 총 8개의 곡을 본 논문의 분석 대상으로 하였으며 그 선정 기준을 중간 템포의 스윙곡으로 하였다. 이는 8곡 모두를 중간 템포의 스윙곡으로 선정함으로써 같은 리듬적 요소 안에서 행해진 즉흥연주를 연구하고자 한 것이다. 즉흥연주 분석은 프레이즈 분석과 투-파이브 화성진행(Two-Five Chord Progression)상에서의 즉흥연주 분석의 두 가지 형태로 나누어 이루어졌으며, 쳇 베이커의 보컬 즉흥연주와 트럼펫 즉흥연주의 특징을 도출하기 위한 부분에서는 투-파이브 화성진행상에서의 즉흥연주 분석부분을 사용하였다. 이는 곡 선정의 기준과 마찬가지 이유로, 같은 화성진행상의 즉흥연주를 분석함으로써 같은 리듬적 요소와 더불어 같은 화성적 요소 안에서 행해진 즉흥연주의 특징을 도출하고자 한 것이다. 쳇 베이커의 보컬 및 트럼펫 즉흥연주의 분석 연구를 통하여 그의 보컬 즉흥연주 기법과 트럼펫 즉흥연주 기법이 서로의 연주에 영향을 미쳤으며 이러한 서로에의 영향이 그만의 특징적인 연주스타일을 만들게 하였음을 알 수 있었다. 이는 관악기와 보컬이 상대방의 연주 기법을 이해하고 습득함으로써 서로의 연주에 발전을 가져 올 수 있다는 것을 의미하는 것이라 할 수 있다. 관악기와 보컬은 호흡을 사용하여 연주하는 악기로 한정된 음역대 안에서 단선율로 표현하여 연주한다는 점에서 그 운용체계가 유사한데 이러한 이 둘의 유사점이 서로의 연주 요소를 도용하여 습득하는 것을 용이하게 한다. 재즈 음악에서 즉흥연주는 중요한 음악적 요소이며 보다 나은 즉흥연주를 향한 재즈 음악인의 노력은 계속될 것이다. 다른 기악 연주자들에 비해 즉흥연주를 함에 있어 취약점을 보여 왔던 보컬리스트들이 관악기의 연주 기법을 이해하고 습득하여 그들의 즉흥연주에 발전을 가져 올 수 있으며 이는 관악기 연주자에게도 마찬가지라 할 수 있다. 보컬과 관악기 연주자가 상대방의 연주 기법을 습득하는 것이 보다 나은 즉흥연주를 향한 하나의 접근 방법이 되어 질 수 있을 것이다. Improvisation is a musical technique found in many genres of music and has dramatically evolved within the context of jazz music. Many jazz musicians have attempted to interpret improvisations in different ways in order to develop personalized methods and musical styles. Throughout history, jazz vocalists introduced the performance techniques and styles of brass instruments into their improvisational vocabulary. An in depth study of Chet Baker, jazz trumpeter and vocalist, provides a clear understanding of his improvisational features and the correlation between his vocal and trumpet improvisations. Baker, throughout his career, was know as an equally gifted improviser on both trumpet and voice. Baker received critical acclaim, public love and issued 194 albums including 70 vocal albums. <It Could Happen To You>, Baker’s vocal album issued in 1958, received significant recognition as Baker’s best work and could therefore be compared with other vocal and trumpet masterpieces of this time period. 4 vocal and 4 trumpet improvisations are analyzed below in medium swing tempo in order to examine the similarities between trumpet and vocal improvisations. The improvisations were examined based on two types of phrases and II-V chord progressions. Improvisation-analysis parts on II-V chord progressions were studied in order to understand Chet Baker's approach to vocal and trumpet improvisation. The following study of Baker’s approach to harmonic and rhythmic ideas within various II-V progressions using either trumpet or vocal improvisation clearly reveals Baker’s methodology with regards to the two instrumental approaches. The following study makes possible the realization that Baker's vocal improvisations influenced his trumpet improvisations and in turn influenced his performance style. Therefore, each technique influenced the other and made possible the innovations experienced on Baker’s recordings and live performances. It is also important to clarify that both brass instruments and vocalists are monophonic and rely on movement of air to produce sound and therefore are limited to phrase lengths bas on the amount of air available for each breath. Improvisation in jazz music is the key feature and jazz musicians constantly strive for improvisations that tell a story and captivate the audience. Compared with other instrumentalists, vocalists improvise at a lower level due to physical restrictions, but they seek to understand performance techniques of brass players and develop their own sound while improvising.
