Abstract Innovation becomes a necessity for firms to compete in fierce environments so that managers are able to expand their lead-time and keep sustainable competitive advantages over competitors. Despite the changes in organizational structures and functioning is occurred and required in the innovation process, the extent of these changes is not equal for all types of innovations (Tushman & Rosenkopf, 1986). Tushman and Rosenkopf (1986) along with other researchers distinguish broadly between two types of innovation: incremental and radical innovation and give academic impetus to find out prominently different prior conditions as well as its outcomes occurred in either radical or incremental innovations. In this paper, we emphasize on the importance of the study for radical innovation in academic and managerial innovation fields. In order for us to search for the key determinants for radical innovation, based on Rosenkopf and Nerkar study (2001), we analyze the effects of firm’s tendency to 1) search for new technological knowledge beyond technological domain and 2) generate technological development beyond organizational boundary on radical innovations. In addition, it is undeniable that external environments make effective contribution on firm’s R&D activities, we consider a contingent role of external environments, such as technological and financial turbulence on the effect of technologically and organizationally boundary spanning on radical innovation. Along with the longitudinal data on patnet activities of the 10 leading global ICT firms over the period 1993-2010, we find that the extent of searching beyond technological and organizational boundaries enhances the propensity of firms’ radical innovations. Moreover, our result indicates that the effect of local search beyond technological domain on radical innovation becomes weaker when technological turbulence is high; however, firms are not negatively influenced by technological turbulence in terms of searching beyond organizational boundary for radical innovation. While economic condition is unstable, we find that the positive effects of beyond technological domain search on radical innovation become weaker. In contrast, in opposite to our hypothesis, financial threat strongly weakens the positive effect of beyond organizational boundary on radical innovations. Our contribution in this paper is to find out the effects of endogenous determinants: firms’ local search spanning beyond technological and organizational boundaries on radical innovation; in addition, the contingent role of environmental instabilities: technological and financial turbulence has been examined in order to discover key internal and external determinants of radical innovation in a firm.
