A series of the autopsy procedures such as a postmortem examination and a legal autopsy not only reveal the exact cause of death and how a man was lead to death but also eliminate any false death of people in pursuit of keeping public order. Also, in order to establish the welfare policy for the health and the peace of people, and the social stability which is a realistic goal in the end, various basic data related to forensic medicine, such as the legal autopsy, should be certainly accumulated continuously. However, while forensic statistics have been presented from other areas including the capital, there has been no forensic statistics submitted by Jeonnam, particularly the eastern part of the province. For the reason, the study was conducted to figure out the condition of the legal autopsy in the area. To obtain basic data of the causes and the manners of death, the 196 autopsy cases performed at the Department of Forensic Medicine of Suncheon Stcarollo hospital in 2008 ~ 2010 were statistically analyzed according to the cause of death and the manner of death.
The classification by the cause of death of unnatural death dealt by this institute is as follows. The total number of forensic-legal autopsy was 196(143 males and 53 females). The number of the 4th decade (46 cases) and the 5th (51 cases) occupied nearly 50 percent(49.5%) of total cases.
Unnatural deaths were 117 cases (59.7%), and natural deaths were 71 cases (36.2%). Of 117 cases of unnatural deaths, suicides were 30 cases (15.3%), homicides were 32 cases (16.3%), accidental deaths were 49 cases (25.0%), and undetermined deaths were 6 cases(3.1%). Among 71 natural deaths, deaths of cardiac origin were 47 cases (66.2%), and it was a leading cause of death in natural deaths. Death due to disease of vascular system were 9 cases (12.7%), deaths due to respiratory system were 2 cases (2.8%), death due to digestive system were 6 cases (8.5%) and other case were 7 cases (9.8%). Of 196 autopsies, 97 cases (49.5%) were occurred by cardiac disease. 31 cases of 117 unnatural deaths (26.5%) and 66 cases of 71 natural deaths(93.0%). Of 196 autopsies, there came up with 72 cases with a Blood Alcohol Content of over 0.05% (36.7%), followed by suicide (46.7%), homicide (34.4%), and accidental death (53.1%).
