G B. Shaw deals with human's freedom and equality by making discussion and debate so central in his works. The purpose of this thesis is to show women of progressive ideas in G. B. Shaw's works who reject social conventions and institutions of the day.
Shaw invents a type of women called "Shavian Woman" who lives according to her own will. Shaw not only unveils the human being's falseness but reveals the inconsistencies of life in his works.
Vivie in Mrs. Warren's Profession appears as a woman of self-respect and independent personality resisting the patriarchal system and conventional social institutions. In particular, Shaw suggests a possibility of solution for the problems of inequality of the sexes through education for women.
Mrs. Warren's Profession suggests that many a social problem like prostitution is caused by the unreasonable social system and inconsistencies of the day, and that women also have their own right and ability as a human being. Shaw's idea of the equality of the sexes brings forth the liberation of women.
In his Man and Superman, Shaw predicts the birth of a superman hoping the creation of the ideal society. Ann Whitefield, the agent of Life Force, wins the battle of sexes that is represented by a conflict between her and John Tanner.
Joan in Saint Joan also achieves her own complete existence through her Life Force. Regarded as a heretic because of her progressive thought, Joan is burned to death. The end of Joan is not, however, a simple death but a sacrifice for more creative evolution. Therefore it is wrong to tell her death as a tragic end.
As I mentioned above, Shaw presents the women's strong will and Life Force as their major vitality and ability through his heroines.
In conclusion, we can find out the purpose of life through Shaw's progressive heroines. And we can also realize that Shaw is really a great and revolutionary playwriter showing the possibility of the creative evolution through his heroines will and vitality In modern society.
