There has been significant research accumulation on the topic of 'image fit' in advertising. largely, these studies report that if advertising source has an image fit with consumers' self image, a positive attitude toward advertising would be expected. In the same context, these studies assumed that when an advertising source fit the brand image, consumers would present positive attitude.
However, previous studies have mostly focused on consumers' attitude toward advertising, largely overlooking their 'attention' toward advertising.
The purpose of this study is to identify the advertising effect of the image fit between a brand name and a advertising source, particularly highlighting public attention toward advertising according to the image fit.
Experiments of this study consist of two preliminary surveys and one main survey, and six classes of students participated in the surveys. A total of 238 survey questionnaires were collected and analyzed by the independent samples t-test.
The research findings are as follows;
First, when an advertising model(source) fits the brand image(name), consumers' attitude to both the brand and the advertisement were more positive.
Second, when an advertising model(source) does not fit the brand image(name), consumers' attention to the advertisement were stronger.
In other words, when the image fit is high, consumers' attitude was better, while their attention was weaker. This result is significant in that the study takes "attention toward advertising" as a dependent variable, which previous studies on image fits disregarded.
