This research is designed to examine the direct and indirect effects that the physical features and a sense of self-esteem of children according to their sex have on social instability. For this, this research checked out the effects that the physical features of children have on social instability, the effects that a sense of self-esteem of children have on social instability, and in what routes the physical features of children have effects on social instability through the medium of a sense of self-esteem.
The subjects were 620 elementary school students in fifth and sixth grade in the city of Seoul and Kyoungki do, and the following measurement tools were used for this research. To begin with, in order to examine the physical features of children, 15 questions regarding BASS out of MBSRQ related to body-ego were used, in order to measure a sense of self-esteem, the gauge for asense of self-esteem by Rosenberg(1965) was used, and in order to measure social instability, SPAI-C was used.
The conclusions of this research are summarized as follows.
First, it was revealed that the physical features of children have meaningful influences in a negative way on the subordinate factors of social instability of performance anxiety, fear against negative evaluation, avoidance activities and accidents, fear against something unfamiliar, and non-assertiveness.
Second, it was found that a sense of self-esteem of children have meaningful effects on in a negative way on the subordinate factors of social instability of performance anxiety, fear against negative evaluation, avoidance activities and accidents, fear against something unfamiliar, and non-assertiveness.
Third, if we take a look at the routes among the physical features, a sense of self-esteem, and social instability according to their sex, while it was shown that in case of male children, the physical features have only indirect effects on social instability through a sense of self-esteem, the physical features of children, in case of female ones, have direct effects on non-assertiveness, one of the lower factors of social instability and at the same time have indirect effects on it through a sense of self-esteem.
As a result, the findings of this research are meaningful in that the direct and indirect effects that the physical features and a sense of self-esteem have on children’s social instability were verified. Namely, by identifying the indirect effects of the physical features on social instability through a sense of self-esteem, it provided basis data for psychological intervention in order to reduce children’s social instability.
