김명순 문학연구 : 주제의식을 중심으로 = A study on the Kim Myung-soon's Literature

국문 초록 (Abstract)

김명순은 1920년대 근대의식을 체험한 신지식인으로 문단에 진출한 근대 최초의 여성작가이다. 그는 다양한 장르를 통하여 많은 문학작품을 남겼으며, 근대 첫 여성작가 중 두 번의 창작집을 출간하였다. 그의 문학적 출발은 당시의 남성 문인들과 비교해도 뒤쳐지지 않았던 것이다. 그러나 뿌리 깊게 남아있던 봉건적 구질서의 인습으로부터 개인 삶이 왜곡되는 불행과, 당시 남성들의 악평에서 자유롭지 못하였다. 김명순 개인과 그의 문학세계가 축소, 과장되는 단초가 되어 그동안 문학사에서 객관적 평가가 이루어지지 않았었다.
1970년대 이후 근대 여성작가에 대한 새로운 인식이 형성되어, 1990년을 정점으로 긍정적 평가가 진행되면서 김명순에 대한 새로운 연구물이 늘어나게 된다. 하지만 여성주의라는 틀에서 작가와 문학세계를 논의하는 한계가 지적된다. 최근 새로운 논의가 나오고는 있지만, 그의 문학을 총체적으로 고찰한 본격연구가 미흡한 상황이다.
이에 본고는 김명순의 기존 작품과 새롭게 발굴된 두 번째 창작집『애인의 선물』에 수록된 전 작품을 대상으로 김명순이 문학에서 형상화 한 주제의식을 고찰하였다. 김명순 문학의 주제의식은 자아인식과 자유연애 사상 그리고 사회의 모순 인식이다. 김명순 문학의 주제의식 형성은 그가 살았던 당시의 시대적 상황의 영향과 작가의 체험이 반영된 것이다.
자아인식은 근대의 변화된 의식으로 기존의 구질서에서 벗어나 새로운 나를 발견하는 자각이었다. 따라서 자아인식은 김명순 문학 전반에 내재된 의식으로 다른 주제의식 형성의 바탕이 되고 있다.
자유연애 사상 또한 당대의 시대적 흐름으로 근대의 변화된 양식 중 한 부분을 문학에 반영한 것이다. 김명순은 새로운 애정관을 추구하고 실천하고자 했으나, 현실에서의 불화를 경험하게 된다. 그는 보편적 애정의 난관에 대한 극복의 대안으로 낭만적 애정관을 문학으로 형상화하였다. 그것은 어떤 구속과 조건을 배제한 정신과 정신, 이상의 합일만을 우위에 두던 낭만적 사랑의 추구이다.
마지막으로 사회의 모순 인식은 당시 사회적 문제로 대두되었던 가족제도나 결혼제도의 폐단을 반영시킨 주제의식이다. 그것은 전제된 자아각성과 자유연애 사상의 실천과정에서 나온 자각으로 인식이 확장된 것이다. 김명순은 근대의식을 실천하는 과정에서 자신의 출생에 따른 결함으로 인습의 억압과 왜곡으로 고통을 체험하게 된다. 구습으로부터 자유롭지 못한 개인 삶의 폐해를 공동의 문제로 확장시켜 형상화하였다.
김명순은 당시 서구사상과 유학 등 근대의식을 형성한 신지식인 여성으로 그가 체험한 근대의식을 바탕으로 새로운 문학세계를 추구하였다. 김명순 문학은 시대의 흐름을 자연스럽게 수용한 작가의 변화된 의식이 있었기에 가능하였으며, 각 장르에 걸쳐 주제의식을 형상화할 수 있었다.
김명순 문학은 다음 세대인 1930년대 여성문인과 여성문학의 성숙과 다양한 글쓰기의 전사적 발판이 되었다. 따라서 작가의 불확실한 전기적 특성을 부각시켜 고찰하는 동향은 지양되어야 한다. 다양한 관점에서 해석되는 본격연구의 절실함과 김명순과 그의 문학이 객관적 평가를 받고 문학사적 위치의 재조명이 이루어지기를 기대한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Kim Myung-soon is the first female writer to enter field of literature as an emerging after experiencing the modernism wave in the 1920s. She left many pieces behind that cover various genres and published two fictional books as the any other male writer in those days, but she was never free from the conventional norms in society that distorted her private life, and the harsh criticism that came from her male counter parts. These became some of the root causes of the under mining of her work and lacking of objective assessment in Korean literature history.
Her work is emerging as a new subject of discussion, but still not enough in-depth studies have been conducted on her writings. Therefore, the following study will look into Kim Myung-soon's work, already to known others, and expand the bound aries to include all pieces in her second book, brought to light by Oh Young-sik, to examine the underlying themes in her writings,
The themes of Kim's work are based on the concepts of self-recognition, free romance, and awareness of the contradicting social and institutional systems. Her work was found to reflect the times of which she lived in and her personal experiences. Self-recognition was about waking up from the conventional ideas and rules at the time and discovering a new self, which is why it is a concept threaded throughout her work that also provided the basis for other themes of her work.
The concept of free love and romance was also an understanding of the modern days partially reflected in her work. Kim pursed a new concept of love and tried to put it into practice but ran into many difficulties in the real world. She tried to overcome these widespread obstacles by depicting romantic love in her pieces. It was an effort to defeat all existing barriers while prioritizing the unity of platonic and ideal love.
Kim's portrayal of the vices of the family and marriage system were reflections of her awareness of the unfair social and institutional structures in the real world. This recognition of the societal environment was an expanded understanding of the community that stemmed from her own practice of self-awakening and belief in free romance. Kim experienced firsthand the hardships from distortion and oppression of personal after her so-called flaw in birth was revealed, all which came from old-fashioned thinking and understanding of the time. This is why she was able to expend those pains in her own personal life caused by a back ward society to depict them as social issues that need to be dealt with.
Kim was able to depict the themes she did at the time, because she accepted the movement for change the contradictions in society based on her personal experience. Kim's work opened many door to next generation female writers, which is why studies that simply treat her personal life and work as one should be shunned. It is now time that her work be reevaluated in Korean literature, as should more in-depth and varied studies be conducted.
