Reading stories we can experience the same feeling with the characters when we understand them well and sympathize with them. Otherwise if we don't do that, we become less interested in the novels as well as not understanding the writer's writing purpose or the aims of the lesson. Therefore we must emphasize the importance of understanding the identities of the characters when we read novels.
At this point in time, Korean textbooks have been revised seven times. But comparison between previous editions has not occurred. In the past comparing standards were vague.
In this study, the identity of the characters in the stories of both the 6th and 7th Education Curriculum will be compared. Students will be able to understand the characters in the novels better, therefore more effective teaching and learning will be done. Furthermore, the Korean textbook in the 7th Education Curriculum will be compared and analyzed with the ones before and I will be able to propose the better Korean textbook for the future.
This study will look at short stories in the 6th and 7th editions of the 1st grade Korean textbook. There are four stories in the 6th edition and six stories in the 7th edition, all told ten stories will be examined. For example "Craddle Story" and "Simchong Story" in the 6th edition have characters that are particularly naive and nice. The personality of these characters is such that they don't face the realities of the surrounding environment. The identities of the characters in "Honggildong Story", "The Dandelion on the Roof", and "White Paper Mustache" which are in the 7th edition, are more realistic and responsible to the environment.
There are some limits in this study. Firstly, the study focus is only the first grade textbooks not textbooks of all the grades. Secondly, because of the change in curriculum within the Korean textbook it is not likely to be an easy job comparing the differences of two books.
This study has so many obstacles in many ways, but it is considered to be helpful in the creation of a new textbook. The 8th edition therefore will be more meaningful and more effective. The study itself will serve as a reference for Korean teaching and learning methods, especially teaching stories.
