This study attempted to research and analyze if the application of service design can have effectiveness in the cultural industry as well and propose a plan for its application suitable for the industry, aiming to expand the scope of its application, which has still been applied only in some industries as of today about 10 years since the spread of the concept of service design in South Korea.
As the scale of small businesses including one-man start-up businesses in different industries including the cultural industry since the end of the 20th century began to be understood as reflecting the characteristics and effectiveness of the relevant industries, seeking a strategy considering the characteristics of the scale of the industries today is recognized as a significant factor for the development of the cultural industry.
Especially, it was expected that the application of service design to the craft culture industry based on the traditional culture in the cultural industry could be a significant strategic means to make up for the decrease in sales caused by the gap between the employees of the craft industry and the tendency of consumers’ purchasing of cultural products, which has long been mentioned as a factor obstructing the growth of the craft culture industry. This study inquired into the applicability of service design in the cultural industry based on this premise.
For the traditional cultural industry, the employees’ understanding of the concept of service design should precede the direct application of service design, so this study attempted to promote their understanding, which is the base of the applicability of service design to the cultural industry, explaining service design based on design thinking, so that there would not be any distortion for the accurate understanding and application of the unfamiliar service design from the position of the employees of the cultural industries, by analyzing the concept of design thinking, with which the employees of the cultural industries are relatively familiar and that of service design and showing the similarities between the concept of design thinking and the concept of service design.
Like this, based on these contents for the research purposes, this researcher drew the following results regarding the plan for the promotion of the understanding and application of service design in the craft culture industry with production methods based on the traditional technologies in the cultural industry.
