본 연구는 한국 기독교문화에 대한 기존의 논의에서 비교적 소홀히 취급되었던 기독교 영성에 초점을 맞추고, 이를 20세기 최고의 영성지도자라 할 수 있는 토마스 머튼(Thomas Merton)의 관상과 행동에 관하여 연구함으로써 기독교 영성이 한국교회에 준 영향과 현대의 기독교가 요청하는 전인적 그리스도의 모습을 모색하고자 한다. 한국 기독교는 초기 부흥집회와 성령운동으로 축복과 은사 위주로 강조되었고, 영성의 측면은 소외 되었다. 그 결과 교우들은 기독교영성을 잘 접하지 못하고 중요하게 여기지 않게 되었다.
이러한 문제의식에서 본 논문이 탐구하고자 하는 것은, 기독교 영성이 현재 기독교문화에 일부분적 편입과정에 불과한 것인가, 아니면 문화적 실천에서 중요한 무게를 지닐 수 있는 것인가를 밝혀내는 것이다. 문화는 사람이 살아가면서 자연적으로 생성된다. 한 사람만으로도 가능하고, 입장이 다른 여럿이 함께 어울려 살아갈 때, 생성, 변화 발전 및 지속되기 때문이다. 이러한 점에서 영성도 기독교문화의 한 상징적 요소라고 할 수 있기 때문이다.
따라서 본 연구에서 구체적인 주제로 삼은 것은 머튼의 관상이며 이를 통해 경험하는 ‘하나님과 합일의 일치’의 문제이다. 왜냐하면 기독교문화의 가장 중요한 요소는 하나님과 관계성 속에 놓여있기 때문이다. 바꾸어 말하면, 하나님을 떠나면 자연스레 기독교문화에서 벗어난다. 이런 점에서 어떠한 기독교공동체라도 하나님에게로 다가가고자하는 움직임이 동반되어야 한다.

본 연구의 내용은 다음과 같다.

첫째, Merton의 삶의 여정을 고찰 한다.
둘째, Merton의 사상에 배경을 준 사람들을 알아본다.
셋째, Merton의 관상과 행동의 변화를 통한 사회참여를 알아본다.
넷째, Merton의 공헌과 한국교회 안에서의 적용점과 위험성을 제시해 본다.

이상의 내용을 가지고 본 논문은 삶의 현장에서 가장 실재적인 체험을 바탕으로 하는 인간존재에 대한 새로운 구상(예수와 진정으로 동일화되는)을 고찰함으로써 머튼의 관상에 나타나는 기독교영성이 수도자들만이 할 수 있는 영성이 아니라, 평범한 교우들도 영성운동에 참여 할 수 있는 구체적인 신앙훈련의 한 양태임을 천명해 보고자 한다.

Abstract

A Study of The Contemplation in Thomas Merton

This study focuses on Christian spirituality that lacks attention in Korean Church culture. In order to help solve this problem, I will employ the thoughts of Thomas Merton who is believed to be one of the most influential spiritual leaders of the 20th century. Using his contemplation and actions, I will attempt to provide a holistic view on Christ that our time requires under the given Korean church context.
While emphasizing a great deal on revival meetings and Pentecostal movements, Korean churches have not paid enough attention to spirituality. As a result, Korean Christians neither have had chances to get acquainted with spirituality nor the chances to know its importance.
One of the goals of this study is to help make clear whether or not Christian spirituality can be used only partially in Korean Christian culture or can play a significant role in our church and society today.
Culture is being formed naturally as we human beings live everyday life. It does not matter whether the involved party is an individual or a community. Culture formed, will never vanish, and spirituality is always an essential part of this process.
The main focus of this study is Thomas Merton’s contemplation that led him to the belief that we human beings are ‘one with God’. Christian culture is much related to the concept of having a relationship with the Ultimate, and any individual or community cannot remain in that significant relationship once they leave culture.

There are four areas that I am exploring through this study:

- First, Thomas Merton's way of life will be considered.
- Second, research on the history who gave a background to Thomas Merton.
- Third, an exploration of the Merton's contemplation and action change how applied in his social participation.
- Fourth, Thomas Merton' achievements and in Korean christianity how to Apply is suggest.

With these in mind, I argue that the core of Thomas Merton’s contemplation, that human beings being united with Jesus as one body, is not something that can only benefit ordained monks, but also lay people. While providing an easy understanding about Merton’s thoughts, practical ways that lay people can use and adapt to their own lives will be demonstrated.
