This study was conducted to investigate the effect of Tai-chi exercise program on the flexibility of lower extremities, muscle strength, and mood of elderly person suffering with osteoarthritis.
This study was a quasi-experiment of non-equivalent control group pretest and posttest design.
For the experiment, the Tai-chi exercise program was applied to the elderly person with osteoarthritis to find out the effect of the exercise program for the flexibility of lower extremities, muscle strength, and mood of elderly person suffering with osteoarthritis.
The experiment was performed from March 9 to May 8, 2003 for control group and May 9 to July 3, 2003 for experimental group. The subjects were osteoarthritis patients in B city. 16 subjects were assigned in experimental group and 17 were assigned in control group conveniently.
The experimental group received Ta-chi exercise twice a week in two weeks, and at each exercise lasted about 60 minutes.
Before and after the exercise, flexibility of lower extremities, muscle strength, and mood were measured.
For the data analysis, SPSS 10.0 Program were used for descriptive statistics, independent t-test and paired t-test.
The results were as follows;
1.The elderly person with osteoarthritis who were participated the Tai-chi exercise program significantly increased flexibility of lower extremities, There was a statistically significant difference after practice of Tai-chi exercise program in several estimates Knee extension(t=2.83, p=.008), Knee flexion(t=3.81, p=.001), Ankle dorsiflexion(t=5.24, p=.000), and ankle plantarflexion(t=4.72, p=.000).
2.The elderly person with osteoarthritis who were participated the Tai-chi exercise program significantly increased muscle strength of lower extremities. There was a statistically significant difference after practice of Tai-chi exercise program in several estimates : Knee extensor(t=3.00, p=.000), Knee flexor(F=8.99, p=.006), Ankle dorsiflexor(t=3.16, p=.004), and ankle plantarflexor(t=2.60, p=.015).
3.The elderly person with osteoarthritis who were participated the Tai-chi exercise program significantly increased mood (t=4.02, p=0.000).
The results of this study showed that the Tai-chi exercise program was a effective nursing intervention, which increases the flexibility of lower extremities, muscle strength, and mood of elderly person suffering with osteoarthritis.
