Art education should focus on the development of an aesthetic eye, formative ability and creativity in order for learners to understand and enjoy various kinds of art. One of sure ways to make it happen is inclusive learning that provides an opportunity to learn about expression and appreciation together in the middle of gaining aesthetic experiences.
A museum, which is a treasure house of historically, socially and educationally valuable art works, could serve as a place of education to foster an aesthetic eye, expressiveness and creativity. The purpose of this study was to develop and apply an appreciation-expression articulated learning program by utilizing on-the-spot study at Gwangju National Museum in a bid to improve the appreciation and expression skills of students. And it's also meant to finalize the developed program based on the results of the study to make it more general.
Relevant literature was reviewed to shed light on the importance and necessity of museum education for elementary art education and how to link appreciation and expression education. The educational programs of Gwangju National Museum and the fourth-grade elementary art curriculum were analyzed to develop appreciation lesson plans and a program by combining appreciation and expression activities. After the program was applied in class, the works of the students were analyzed, and the observation and interview data were analyzed as well. The findings of the study about the educational effects of the program were as follows:
First, the hands-on activities enabled them to acquire and apply how to appreciate, and they had grown interest in appreciation activities in that course.
Second, they showed an improvement in appreciation skills as they found the activities intriguing, and they were eager to express themselves and got to have confidence. As a consequence, they came to find it worthwhile and rewarding to make a work.
Third, the appreciation-expression articulated learning via museum served as an opportunity for them to be more familiar with the museum as one of cultural spaces.
The effort by this study to apply articulated education is expected to pave the way for museum-based appreciation instruction in elementary art education sector and to help enhance the quality of appreciation and expression activities.
